Good golly I've been looking forward to this. I just finished Soll's little book on Hegel's Metaphysics (finished - never said understood) and am happy for more Hegel content. This channel is consistently wonderful.
Congratulations on being fearless. I also think that what you understood through reading is still an understanding. You peeled a few layers off and now it’s a bit easier to peel even more
Who would have thought a message from St. Asshole would be so encouraging and heartwarming! Thank you. Yes, the peeling is easier! Thoughtfully said. I've started pushing through excerpts from philosophy of history and am quite enjoying it. Hope you are well - thank you for the comment.
I think this video on Hegel has resolved my issues with Camus. I need to listen to it again, but there's something there. The individual at odds with the broader laws, the particle and the universe, the parts and the whole and subject object. I was grappling with the meaning of life, but when I listened to this I realised the question is irrelevant because individuals are wrapped up in living within larger systems, working through making that system work and countries work along with each other. These systems can also be overwhelming to an individual, because they have limited control over those systems, at which time a person needs to look to inner strength. I am part of the whole and collectively we can all work together cooperatively to make life better, the world better and we can move towards a better understanding, better reason, better knowledge, better systems. At the moment perhaps we're moving in the opposite direction, but we still have our selves and our individual lives to improve through self refection through hindsight. I think if I were to read hegel i wouldn't grasp so many concepts so easily. Thanks for doing all the work to bring it together so logically and digestable.
Few people I encounter practice critical thinking more or less try to understand Hegel but your statement is so interesting, I have to beg you to clarify further if you would be so kind

oh god, an amazing video. In a month, I will start studying philosophy in Frankfurt. I am already dreading reading such difficult texts as from hegel. In recent weeks I took a break and didnt read, watch or list to much philosphy. But this video greatly motivated me. And though I am personally mainly interested in the intersection of philosophy and politics, I feel once again why I still wanna pursue philosphy in general as well. Thank you, this was an evening/night well spend
Start reading, this will be your job for the next few years anyways. But don’t wait for the perfect lectures, just read. I met some philosophers from Frankfurt, it is a great university to study philosophy.
This is a phenomenal production and the way you've done it truly explains Hagel's philosophies and theories so much better than just reading the book! Could you imagine if this guy had any clue about quantum mechanics!?
My deepest gratitude for making this video. "The dialect posits the universal, then returns again to the particular." The content itself is an example of this. Well done.
I finally managed to finish the entire Phenomenology of Spirit yesterday, after years of attempting. This video has helped me so much in giving me an overview of WHAT HEGEL'S PROJECT WAS, I am very thankful that such a cohesive and aesthetic content of Hegel is available for free!
I think the idea of our oneness with the universe has been around forever. Primitive man probably experienced it , knew it. Mary Baker Eddy in the 19th century declared "God is all in all". She recognized we are not separate from the infinite. Thank you for this wonderful overview of Hegel's ideas.
At around 02:01:20 you mentioned the fact that a lot of the newer generation is trying to understand the 20th century, which I can agree on from experience. This made me realise that it is inevitable that the messy unfolding of the 20th century is to be studied so carefully, as this could be the workings of Geist trying to understand its own wickedness that resulted from its freedom. I also think that both Hegel and especially Heidegger is very overhated in Anglo-speaking countries due to the language-barrier with German. Philosophy is also something you must feel, and German philosophy feels like the clarification of knowledge you already possessed, true understanding. The English translation of German philosophy does not contain the same level of instinctive understanding unfortunately. Therefore, is there also a visual guide to Heidegger coming someday? These videos are absolutely extraordinary and I think Heidegger's philosophy is one of the most important of all time!
Hegel is so difficult - I found him harder to read than a lot of the graduate level mathematics I studied in school - but you did an amazing job explaining him. I have a friend who is a philosophy professor and definitely going to show him this video too (he loved the one on Kant)
I listened to this while applying the third of ten layers of varnish to a stained wood Newtonian telescope stand, bridling at the need to lightly sand each layer of varnish, which requires 18 hours to dry before the next layer can be applied. It makes one think.
I just have to express appreciation for visualizing concepts discussed. Clearly done with intention and effort for the viewer to be able to understand easily, granted they pay attention. Really good shit bro.
Such a great work, as always. I've noticed something out of context and it's that in the minute 53:00, the phrase of Hegel about "The fear of the lord is indeed the begining of wisdom", it's not a Hegel's phrase, in fact, is a phrase of Bible, in Job 28:29 you can find that talks about how wisdom was hidden for the simple eyes of man, only God has known it path because he prepared and manifestated wisdom in the begining. For us to reach this virtue, it says that intelligence is being far of evilness, and wisdom the fear of us as humans to God, our lord.
This is the most evenhanded, thorough presentation of Hegel's thought I have yet to see on this platform. Thank you for clearly delineating the point about God's suffering--it is the crux of his entire system, but everyone in the academic sphere is too embarrassed to talk about God. (Really, if you go through my comment history, 90% is me arguing with people about Hegel and the revealed nature of God.) EDIT: Someone find James Lindsay and shove this video up his... no... that's too much... politely recommend to him that he watch it.
I never really understood Western philosophy in depth until I studied Buddhism in detail. You can see how they struggled with the ideas Buddhism deals with. The identity of relative (particular) and absolute is referred to as the Two Truths in Buddhism. Everyone who wants deeper perspective would do good to have a basic knowledge of Nagarjuna's *Mulamadyamikakarika.*
Yeah I do wonder how much eastern influence was swept under the rug or used as secret sources, considering Buddhist translations had reached Europe by the middle ages. There is also a common thread, in particular German thinkers that took interest in eastern texts, Leibniz, Müller, Nietzsche, possibly Schopenhauer. The I-Ching clearly made an impact, first translated by Jesuits and shared with Leibniz. The first publications were in Germany.
My reading is that Hegel is a Hermiticist inspired by TAOism life affirming not craving for transcendence wrapped up in Death Cults. In his lectures makes short shrift of Eastern Philosophies but runs with them. affirms the dignity of being meaning concepts runs with
@@gyurilajos7220 The information they had back then about Buddhism was completely unreliable and inaccurate. I'm more referring to how Western philosophy closes in on the same ideas that Buddhism addresses, not any specific mentioning of Eastern philosophy Hegel made.
Riddle me this Hegel! A girl wants my number and holds my hand, laughs at my stupid jokes, and so on. I explain to her Divine violence, why revolutionary terror is absolutely necessary and correct, and try to do you a solid and explain the dialectic, but prolly in the most incoherent manner. She listens and is interested, then I explain to her the ugly truth of social democracy and she understands. Then I ask her to hang out and she ghosts me. Do I perform negation of the negation and chase her? You’ve ruined my life.
The woman holds your hand, laughs at your jokes, and shows an interest in you, presumbably a reasonably attractive male. You then try to deflect from what is actually happening in the moment. She ghosts you. Yes, you perform a negation of the negation and your Aufhebung is to hold to the real biological reality of procreation and child rearing. Or, you can be afraid of that kind of commitment and keep deflecting & avoiding the obvious!
@@OllieBakker except what was in the moment was in fact the present state of things, class society, its lamentations, its abolition, and revolutionary terror. I think it’s because I made a Hitler (Proudhon) joke that she prolly didn’t get…. (Her brother is along the lines of a Proudhonian).

Thank you very much for the efforts put into making this video. This was incredibly informative and has definitely sparked my interest in Hegel. Will be doing further research on the topic.
There's good skepticism for why it's ignored (once you completely exclude the Analytic Tradition's explicit rejection of and failure to grasp Hegel's project): If the thesis it holds is true, it can literally revolutionize the entire modern paradigm of religion, philosophy, _and_ science and actually open the way to not simply _a,_ but _the_ Theory of Everything. Hegel's entire system was an attempt at that. He wanted to provide a purely immanent development of Logic _into_ the sciences of Nature (Applied Mathematics, Physics/Chemistry, Biology) _and_ consequently Spirit (Psychology, Jurisprudence/Political Science, Art/Philosophy/Science as such), and the only way he saw to achieve that was by literally reinventing the foundations of logical reason through Plato's dialectic, built on further through Kant. What all that specifically means in the context of today's academic fields is that he wanted to develop an absolutely _a priori_ rational science, a conception that outright contradicts the foundation of everything that comprises today's empirical sciences dating back to Francis Bacon through the help of Aristotle's _Posterior Analytics._ Nothing I say here is to suggest that Hegel is a crackpot who believed he could achieve absolute knowledge of everything (science _always_ continues to expand in its knowledge), but it _does_ imply that Hegel is yet even more radical than he is already hinted to be in his project. To give you just a taste of just how radical his project is, the _Science of Logic_ was explicitly meant to develop all of ontology, metaphysics and logic totally _without_ any axioms. Now take the completion of that one Logic, and then go on to develop _all_ the knowledge we take for granted and _will_ continue to create, under a unified rational lens. _That_ is what he is really all about.
@@Synodalian I'm not sure what your problem with Hegel is here. Insofar as empirical science thinks, it necessarily must work in terms of categories expounded in philosophy. Insofar as Hegel's method holds, I don't think anyone gets out of that. Insofar as todays sciences can't get on board with this, that's the degree to which they are irrational. That's never philosophy's problem.
@@Synodalianhegel isn't trying to create the world apriori, he just wants to show necessity in the world. Why the absolute idea has to manifests itself into space time, matter, forces, chemicals, life, consciousness, self consciousness, religion, and ultimately philosophy. On the other hand, it is the job empirical sciences to show how it happens, which chemicals give rise to which which other ones etc. Both philosophy and sciences have different aims for hegel, and he explicitly says philosophy shouldn't come in to teach sciences
@@thall77795 I agree even more on your point than you'd think. My point is that _not only_ does empirical science rely on philosophy for its very substance of reasoning, but philosophy in its _full development_ through dialectical reason literally _is_ science in its true form. In other words, according to Hegel what we call "empirical science" today is a misnomer: it literally _isn't_ science but is rather a pragmatically arranged consensus of contingent knowledge built on the presupposed and _unproven_ foundations of empiricism dating back to Francis Bacon. It's precisely not philosophical and, therefore, scientific _enough._
I wonder if Hegel was aware of how close some of his ideas came to ancient Eastern philosophy, i.e. "Form is emptiness" meaning all form is empty of self. Any object is made up of everything else in the universe, material or immaterial, and has no independent identity. The main difference between Eastern and Western spirituality being the contrast between a belief in an immanent God as opposed to an external God is another obvious observation Hegel may or may not have been aware of. I looked up the difference between transcendent and transcendental, something I'd never thought about before. This presentation was so deep and rich, I'm glad we'll be getting a written summary from you to review.

Thank you. I've had this on my screen for a few days and chipped away at it. I'll watch it in full at the weekend. I'm dipping my toe in philosophy to grasp the forces that seem to be pulling on us all, and your channel has been an excellent way to get started.
I have never read Hegel. But this video made me realize how much of my perceptions and ideas have roots on him...
The quality of your videos are just so good man! Keep it up!
Right on! Thanks so much for this in depth review of Hegel. It's been too long since I read his 1807 magnum opus.
another incredible explanation of an extremely complex subject - thanks so much for your work
I’m so impressed by you. Your work has had a profound effect on my philosophy. Keep it up!
Thank you so much for this one.
The amount of research and organizing you had to do to make this documentary is astonishing. Thank you.
Looking foward to this one, listening!!! Loved the one on Spinoza.

My papa and brother allowed me the gift of Spinoza first as a child of 5. My papa always would say to me throughout his years on books of knowledge that I was an idealist? Mmmm
Just to tell you and being honest... this is the best exposition about Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. Thereby, congratulations on this work and keep producing this philosophical series/videos.
I'd love to have seen this video when I was deeply knowing Hegel's philosophy.
Love this video so much. I'm honestly amazed at how well you've explained Hegel's ideas in only 2 hours. Thanks for teaching us!
I’ve been reading Hegel and books about Hegel for over a decade and have watched more Hegel explainer vids than I can count. This is the best 2 hours on Hegel I have ever spent. Hands down.
I just started today watching videos explaining hegel and i was left hopeless. This is a fkn miracle
Known about him for a while but was doing a deep dive this week. No clue how Then & Now is reading our minds. Also, this is a great lecture on Hegel and history: th-cam.com/video/_xbZzxet9Cs/w-d-xo.html
Michael Sugrue's lectors are a god-send.
@@YTwoKay thanks a lot
Wow I actually recieved the notification, and I already know im in for an awesome experience with this video.
You just turned my whole crappy month around,
Mr. Highly underrated Then and Now guy!
I like how you flipped the reflection shot, so that our initial recognition of the real you was actually the reflection of you. Quite artistic.
This is just incredible, I think we need Hegel now more than ever . Thank you for all the effort that goes into a production like this
Few people I encounter practice critical thinking more or less try to understand Hegel but your statement is so interesting, I have to beg you to clarify further if you would be so kind
This wonderful document is almost about every thing, science, cosmology, philosophy, mediation, and thinking outside the box, thanks for the efforts 👏💞
This is literally one of the coolest things I have seen in my whole life! Thanks.
Love your work man, keep it up!
This was incredible and needs multiple rewatches!! ...
cannot wait for the guide video on Marx!!
This is a masterwork. Thank you very much for your contributions, it certainly will bring a lot to a wider, curious audience and excise these ideas from the ivory tower of academia.
You are a hidden jewel in a world of chaotic, baseless and unstructured content. Never stop doing what you do. I can't wait to finish watching this masterpiece
Well balance of masculine and feminine
It's the empathy that can bring me to tears of happiness of the truth

This has benn me for 42 years now the muse Egyptian goddess. Jesus before Christ was god as one after cross it's the soul with in us when law is back in God's hands do we speak of Horus or will it be with Christ.
This piece has only masterpiece elements.
What a gargantuan project and so well executed. Amazing work.
I have never seen such great content before on TH-cam. Great work !!!!!!!!
oh god, an amazing video.

I already study philosophy...and his videos are a tool for me to understand clearly whaqt they teach us..
Can't wait to watch this one
Your work is truly invigorating. I appreciate the quality of thought you bring to these essential ideas and questions.
Great staff!waiting a video for Wittgenstein also!
I second this
This is a phenomenal production and the way you've done it truly explains Hagel's philosophies and theories so much better than just reading the book! Could you imagine if this guy had any clue about quantum mechanics!?
Great stuff , I'm on my 3rd watch through and will be watching it a 4th time too. So many good things to think about. Ty for this ❤
My deepest gratitude for making this video.
For free for free for free.
Does knowledge come
down to sheckles alone ?
I've learned so much about Hegel, a philosopher whose thoughts have attracted me for years. Thank you.
Hegel is so difficult - I found him harder to read than a lot of the graduate level mathematics I studied in school - but you did an amazing job explaining him. I have a friend who is a philosophy professor and definitely going to show him this video too (he loved the one on Kant)
Graduate level math. I stand corrected. You need a genious level I.Q to understand it. Sounds like the first post modernist
@@SummerDream3r yeah, but does even the A.I understand Hegel? Lol.Does Hegel even understand himself. God only knows for sure.
I listened to this while applying the third of ten layers of varnish to a stained wood Newtonian telescope stand, bridling at the need to lightly sand each layer of varnish, which requires 18 hours to dry before the next layer can be applied. It makes one think.
babe , wake up ! Then & Now just dropped 2 hour long lecture on Hegel
its about now, but also not now and thisness and not thisness
This is an extraordinary piece. I will be watching a couple more times and then diving into Hegel. Thank you!
Hell of a Hegel summary. Subscribed
Your videos just keep getting better and better. One of the most valuable subscriptions I’ve ever made. Thank you.
First exposure to Hegel and you are giving a great explanation. Ty bunches, Fam! One Love.
Appreciate the effort that might have gone into it man. Congratulations.
A Hegel documentary? Damn, amazing, thanks again.
This video is a marvel of popularization of a complex thinker. A true work of public interest. Chapeau! 🎩
THE MOST ANTICIPATED EVENT OF THE YEAR
This is going on the promotional posters
Right? Just in time to be of tremendous help for a study group I'm heading. It's about Brazilian culture. That's how universal Hegel is.
Truly. I've been waiting on this one since the Spinoza video dropped. I knew Hegel had to be in the pipeline.
I can now possibly maybe perhaps kinda understand half of what Zizek is talking about now!
We want HUSSERL not this Hegelian bs
I just have to express appreciation for visualizing concepts discussed. Clearly done with intention and effort for the viewer to be able to understand easily, granted they pay attention. Really good shit bro.
Certified theory tube classic
Thanks for producing such incredible content
Thank you Lewis for your work. Excellent!
For us to reach this virtue, it says that intelligence is being far of evilness, and wisdom the fear of us as humans to God, our lord.
there will NEVER be a lingering shot of him walking away from the camera
holy shit
You rock! 😁. Hegel has always scared me so keen. Been a big fan thanks for videos!
What a great content!!! Inspiring as always! Keep doing the great work 😊
TH-cam was worth creating for this video alone. This is such and incredible effort that it's just joyously heartbreaking.
This is gem !
OMG, I cannot believe you did this. Thank you for hearing me out.
Good stuff my man. This is a good show of true philosophy.
This is the most evenhanded, thorough presentation of Hegel's thought I have yet to see on this platform. Thank you for clearly delineating the point about God's suffering--it is the crux of his entire system, but everyone in the academic sphere is too embarrassed to talk about God. (Really, if you go through my comment history, 90% is me arguing with people about Hegel and the revealed nature of God.)
EDIT: Someone find James Lindsay and shove this video up his... no... that's too much... politely recommend to him that he watch it.
Best philosophy channel on TH-cam, hands down.
Lmao 🤣
@@OllieBakker neither of us were 18
Thank you for the film and for pictures from my beloved Lviv.
very cool video, incredibly insightful, I do not believe I got everything but ill definitely come back to this video many times to try to absorb all the dense shit. Thank you lots for what you do here! ❤
Dude. You are a Dangerous Man. If only I’d seen this back when I was in seminary. ❤
Thank you very much for the efforts put into making this video. This was incredibly informative and has definitely sparked my interest in Hegel. Will be doing further research on the topic.
King of dropping a thought bomb then walking away from the camera
Thanks so much for your clear and entertaining explanation of difficult subject matter, it is a gift to the world.
Keep up the good work!
This was amazing, wow. Great video on Hegel, I love your work.
The Science of Logic is among the best philosophical works of all time. Horribly and unjustifiably ignored. Would highly recommend.
What all that specifically means in the context of today's academic fields is that he wanted to develop an absolutely _a priori_ rational science, a conception that outright contradicts the foundation of everything that comprises today's empirical sciences dating back to Francis Bacon through the help of Aristotle's _Posterior Analytics._
Nothing I say here is to suggest that Hegel is a crackpot who believed he could achieve absolute knowledge of everything (science _always_ continues to expand in its knowledge), but it _does_ imply that Hegel is yet even more radical than he is already hinted to be in his project.
@@thall77795
I agree even more on your point than you'd think.
@@mustyHead6
I'm curious about that remark, where did he say that philosophy shouldn't teach the sciences?
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU
I thought I was wise enough to not have an existential crisis again in my life but, here we are 😅
It's inevitable for our type. How to react when staring into the abyss is what defines us.
I know, right? Here is me at 4:00am looking for this comment.
First time getting to know a bit of Hegel and what can I say? This hurts differently….
I only wish I could have watched this on the big screen. Epic work!
A 2-hour video discussing about a philosopher? You spoil us Then & Now.
Probably a conscious effort to reproduce those things.
The Bhagavad Gita's influence on him should not be lost in time!
And he discrediting Indian philosophy too hastily and damaging the reputation too.
Thanks for offering this amazing video.
