Fandom is a double edge sword: It gives you a built in audience that will hype up your offering.... unless your not true to the IP then they will be the loudest critics. Hollywood wants the money of fans but not the requirement to turn out quality. It's annoying how media outlets, like WhatCulture, will focus on the people who cry woke and not the majority of the criticism that is completely legitimate.

People bullied the actor off Twitter and launched a smear campaign against him, the show and the character. Even though the Character never actually symbolized anything Racist or cultural appropriation. In fact the character largely rejected the harmful stereotypes he was accused of perpetuating but nobody listened. Marvel caved to the criticism and eventually replaced him in his own show and in the comics too. They recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of the character by killing him off.

I actually liked "Rise of the Pink Ladies", and wished that we'd gotten at least one more season. Sure, it was riding in "Grease's" coattails, but was charming in its own right.
The Acolyte is badly written with contradictions, awful dialogue, poor plot and and just a bad show. Not to mention that the creators care more about ticking off prejudice viewers than to provide a good quality show for the true star war fans. Same thing with Doctor Who.

I'll be honest, I didn't care to watch the show, but reading up on the Showrunner (despite her being Weinstein's Assistant) and what her intentions were......she had some genuinely interesting ideas. She genuinely wanted to ask questions and "challenge the norms" without going full "The Last Jedi". The problem was, I'm sure Kathleen Kennedy has a little too much of a say in how things went. Thus, we got what we got.
Lethal Weapon was a great TV show and Clayne Crawford's performance helped me out of a very bad depression I was stuck in so for me it's always going to be one off my favourite TV shows (until they killed off Riggs).
Yeah I rather enjoyed that television show, I thought it was very unnecessary when it first came out but I gave it a shot. Killing Riggs in that way really was putting the nail in the coffin for it though.

This is a weird list. Most of the time, the controversy around a show consists of the things that make it terrible or mid. That blowback is why shows like Halo and Lethal Weapon get cancelled, instead of endlessly renewed. I also don't understand the idea that anyone who dislikes a creator going out of their way to change the gender, personality, or ethnicity of an already established character is automatically a bigot.
I think she's trivializing the issue of Velma by saying it relied heavily on simple snarky and meta humor and find it extremely insulting. Snarky and Meta humor can be good. Actively insulting your audience by implying the people who like scooby doo are bigoted idiots both in and outside of the show is not okay. Additionally, the race of the characters had nothing to do with why most of us hated the show, it was her character's whiney, cruel, insulting, holier-than-thou attitude and personality is what made us hate it.
In what way is it "racist" to have a character of non-Asian origin be a martial artist? Martial arts is a combat style that isn't a culture and to act like you can't have a white, black, or other master a martial art is in itself, racist. Sure, Iron Fist wasn't a good show, but it didn't deserve the controversy that it got, there are other martial art heroes in Marvel Comics, Shang Chi for one. And as i recall, his movie didn't do to well either.
Shang Chi was no Avengers but it did make 430M on a budget of about 150M so it was at least prpfitable. I agree the racial element shouldnt have been controversial given the source material but that was the least of that shows problems

However, the complaints about a white character learning martial art plays into a typical orientalism trope of a "white guy learns some mystical Asian thing and becomes more of a master at it than them", and therefore that's where the complaints may come from. In addition, some people thought it would be a good opportunity for an Asian actor to lead that show and that there could possibly be a much more interesting story there 🤔.

The Rings of Power is one of the worst tv shows on now. It disrespected the lore of the most beloved fantasy series of all time, it disrespects Tolkien by daring to think it can do a better story, the entire ad campaign boiled down to just attacking the fans and talking about how they have black people in it instead of listening to genuine fan criticism about the trash show and it's lore destruction, the acting was awful, the dialogue laughable, the pacing... well it was just a bloody snore fest. Isn't all fan fiction based on thinking you can do better than the creator and director, though? You probably have your own stories you would like to see set in the LOTR universe. For the shows on this list that I've actually seen: Iron Fist, Danny Rand is the most well know Iron Fist, so it only made sense to use him. The Continental I completely forgot this even existed haha. Halo could have been great, but sadly... LoTR, well, when you make needless changes for dei, and ignore the lore its based on, this is the outcome. Acolyte, is was trash from the first 5min trough the finale, for countless reasons.

The shows had controversy. The shows sucked mainly because of the controvercial parts. The shows were canceled. Had issue one been addressed, the other two would probably have never happened.
It was maybe made in another period but for iron fist being white made an interesting story in the ultimate spider man series where scorpion was extra focused on him cause he was an outsider. Plus let's be real if they changed that part, the same amount of people would be angry for that not respecting the source material. Bummer about Halo. Season 2 was a vast improvement over Season 1. What was season 1 about? I can't remember. I've watched Season 2 twice now. The Arbiter, The Flood and Reach. It was good, not great, but good.

Of those I've watched I agree on "Iron Fist" and "Rings Of Power" but I like "The Acolyte" (never had a problem with women or colour or "wokeness") and I quite liked "Halo" although I've only watched the first season.
I liked the Halo series. Full disclosure: I don't care much about Halo the game. I liked some of Velma but it went way too much into a lame way too cruel plot over all.

Iron first doesnt need to be redone with a asian character, it was sinply a horrible show with horribly writing n worst acting n fighting. I think if you do any IP, you either piss off the fans or the broader audience. You can't have both. I think creators should just do it their own way and people can take it or leave it. Or do original stuff, and the audience don't get to say how you should use YOUR characters.
I actually enjoyed Gypsy. I think had it used a different title the show would have lasted longer, even though the Fleetwood Mac song is the one playing in the opening titles. Going down the rabbit hole was mentioned in the show so maybe something that gives a little nod to Alice in Wonderland might have worked better or since the character of Jean was a therapy, maybe the title of the show should have been related to psychology especially since in the show she starts a double life in a sense
No really disagreements with the core claim for each of the shows. No complaint with the shows picked. Good job, but I might apply this whole video under the same microscope. Stop throwing in claims that there is massive uproar about race. Your are just making stuff up to fill your script. There was no controversy around race for any show in any measurable amount of time. People taking issue with changing race of any kind just because “we want to” is not being more inclusive. It’s wrong. Just as it would be wrong to recast an actor of color with a white actor. We all agree that is not what we want to see. So don’t do it the other way around and call it inclusion. Especially when the source material has already been established. All that being said, the noise online about these changes, while valid, were so small amongst the large complaints that you rightfully pointed out in your critique. The only person turning this issue into an issue about race is you.
I'm Usually the guy who is optimistic about tv shows trying to find the good in them not caring if the cgi ain't great or the story is not always great but Halo managed to piss me off. Now the art and props department i respect you whole heartedly you did try. But the main gripes was it was a show about nothing similar to the story of halo it was a way for the writers to "make it better, cause games can't tell as good stories as i/we can " I felt insulted cause the show had no real soul of what makes Halo such a impact medium. If they ever try again a smaller story focused on ODST during the war with band of brothers meets helldivers 2 and the trailer for ODST. Season 2 first 2 episodes were decent but still not the real spirit of the medium. Rings of power have a similar sense of trying to improve or make something better to suit the story instead of following the story but still managing to blend the changes well with the source material. House of the dragon for example is doing this well by blending what was written but not changing to much to move it away from the story. I know i come off like a picky douche but i cared for halo been a long time since a show made me pissed off
If you don't care if the story is good or not then do you just watch for the pretty lights? The story is what makes the show. CGI can be let down by budgets. Performances can be let down by an actor just not getting it. But the script is something you have complete control over
The mental gymnastics and denial are absolutely next level. It's 100% objective fact that shows like Rings of power and Acolyte flopped because they were woke, and had terrible activist writers who had little to no respect for the source material. This is the view of the overwhelming majority, whatculture is finished if its going this way.. Hiring witers/commentators who demonise their own audience, only ends one way.
Not sorry about it: I loved The Acolyte. Although that might be because I watched it after all of the episodes were out and I was expecting a complete train wreck. Once you get past the first couple of episodes it's pretty solid.

This is a weird list. Most of the time, the controversy around a show consists of the things that make it terrible or mid. That blowback is why shows like Halo and Lethal Weapon get cancelled, instead of endlessly renewed.
I also don't understand the idea that anyone who dislikes a creator going out of their way to change the gender, personality, or ethnicity of an already established character is automatically a bigot.
I think she's trivializing the issue of Velma by saying it relied heavily on simple snarky and meta humor and find it extremely insulting. Snarky and Meta humor can be good. Actively insulting your audience by implying the people who like scooby doo are bigoted idiots both in and outside of the show is not okay. Additionally, the race of the characters had nothing to do with why most of us hated the show, it was her character's whiney, cruel, insulting, holier-than-thou attitude and personality is what made us hate it.
In what way is it "racist" to have a character of non-Asian origin be a martial artist? Martial arts is a combat style that isn't a culture and to act like you can't have a white, black, or other master a martial art is in itself, racist. Sure, Iron Fist wasn't a good show, but it didn't deserve the controversy that it got, there are other martial art heroes in Marvel Comics, Shang Chi for one. And as i recall, his movie didn't do to well either.
Shang Chi was no Avengers but it did make 430M on a budget of about 150M so it was at least prpfitable. I agree the racial element shouldnt have been controversial given the source material but that was the least of that shows problems

I don't think anyone called Iron Fist racist. However, the complaints about a white character learning martial art plays into a typical orientalism trope of a "white guy learns some mystical Asian thing and becomes more of a master at it than them", and therefore that's where the complaints may come from.
In addition, some people thought it would be a good opportunity for an Asian actor to lead that show and that there could possibly be a much more interesting story there 🤔.

The Rings of Power is one of the worst tv shows on now. It disrespected the lore of the most beloved fantasy series of all time, it disrespects Tolkien by daring to think it can do a better story, the entire ad campaign boiled down to just attacking the fans and talking about how they have black people in it instead of listening to genuine fan criticism about the trash show and it's lore destruction, the acting was awful, the dialogue laughable, the pacing... well it was just a bloody snore fest. And since only 37% of people finished the series how can you claim it was OK? Typical shill media. Stop being bought out by big studios and have some integrity. The less said about The Acolyte the better

I'm conflicted with this list on the one hand yeah these shows came out and disappeared with little fan fair and didn't deserve the wasted attention. But, on the other hand dismissing fan reactions because they want faith adaptations is pretty lazy hand waving. As far as the constant interjections of race swapping complaints an all encompassing remark at the beginning would have been enough. It was just as annoying to hear you bring up peoples anger at race swapping as it is to hear peoples opinions on race swapping.
Calling most of these shows “mediocre” is already showing the decline of this channel and lack of understanding of fans.

Iron Fist, Danny Rand is the most well know Iron Fist, so it only made sense to use him.
The Continental I completely forgot this even existed haha.

The hoopla around Iron Fist was just downright hilarious because it really shouldnt have been a thing REGARDLESS of the quality of the show. That was peak "people just looking for something to complain and be offended about". Because instead of demanding for them to cast an Asian actor, which ironically would be a case of putting an asian person in a stereotypical martial arts based role, why not demand more asian characters get used?

It was maybe made in another period but for iron fist being white made an interesting story in the ultimate spider man series where scorpion was extra focused on him cause he was an outsider.
Plus let's be real if they changed that part, the same amount of people would be angry for that not respecting the source material. That and some would scream things like "pandering" or "obeying the woke culture"(I mean many other shows on the list got that criticism) .

Of those I've watched I agree on "Iron Fist" and "Rings Of Power" but I like "The Acolyte" (never had a problem with women or colour or "wokeness") and I quite liked "Halo" although I've only watched the first season.
I liked the Halo series.
Full disclosure: I don't care much about Halo the game.
I liked some of Velma but it went way too much into a lame way too cruel plot over all.

Iron first doesnt need to be redone with a asian character, it was sinply a horrible show with horribly writing n worst acting n fighting. It also didnt help that the actor didnt know shid about martial arts or even trained n looked horrible when he did fight. It does help if u pick up a comic book or even look up the information considering he has been around since the 70s
I think if you do any IP, you either piss off the fans or the broader audience. You can't have both.
I think creators should just do it their own way and people can take it or leave it.
Or do original stuff, and the audience don't get to say how you should use YOUR characters.
I actually enjoyed Gypsy. I think had it used a different title the show would have lasted longer, even though the Fleetwood Mac song is the one playing in the opening titles. Going down the rabbit hole was mentioned in the show so maybe something that gives a little nod to Alice in Wonderland might have worked better or since the character of Jean was a therapy, maybe the title of the show should have been related to psychology especially since in the show she starts a double life in a sense
No really disagreements with the core claim for each of the shows. No complaint with the shows picked. Good job, but I might apply this whole video under the same microscope. Stop throwing in claims that there is massive uproar about race. Your are just making stuff up to fill your script. There was no controversy around race for any show in any measurable amount of time. People taking issue with changing race of any kind just because “we want to” is not being more inclusive. It’s wrong. Just as it would be wrong to recast an actor of color with a white actor. We all agree that is not what we want to see. So don’t do it the other way around and call it inclusion. Especially when the source material has already been established. All that being said, the noise online about these changes, while valid, were so small amongst the large complaints that you rightfully pointed out in your critique. The only person turning this issue into an issue about race is you.

I'm Usually the guy who is optimistic about tv shows trying to find the good in them not caring if the cgi ain't great or the story is not always great but Halo managed to piss me off. Now the art and props department i respect you whole heartedly you did try. But the main gripes was it was a show about nothing similar to the story of halo it was a way for the writers to "make it better, cause games can't tell as good stories as i/we can " I felt insulted cause the show had no real soul of what makes Halo such a impact medium. If they ever try again a smaller story focused on ODST during the war with band of brothers meets helldivers 2 and the trailer for ODST. Season 2 first 2 episodes were decent but still not the real spirit of the medium. Rings of power have a similar sense of trying to improve or make something better to suit the story instead of following the story but still managing to blend the changes well with the source material. House of the dragon for example is doing this well by blending what was written but not changing to much to move it away from the story. I know i come off like a picky douche but i cared for halo been a long time since a show made me pissed off
If you don't care if the story is good or not then do you just watch for the pretty lights? The story is what makes the show. CGI can be let down by budgets. Performances can be let down by an actor just not getting it. But the script is something you have complete control over
If it followed the story to the letter, people then complain it is unoriginal and predictable.

It's 100% objective fact that shows like Rings of power and Acolyte flopped because they were woke, and had terrible activist writers who had little to no respect for the source material. This is the view of the overwhelming majority, whatculture is finished if its going this way.. Hiring witers/commentators who demonise their own audience, only ends one way.
Not sorry about it: I loved The Acolyte. Although that might be because I watched it after all of the episodes were out and I was expecting a complete train wreck. Once you get past the first couple of episodes it's pretty solid.
I think it's better than Book of Boba Fett and that Kenobi show. Nowhere near as good as Andor though.
