I read the comments here and just wanted to clarify that we only played the first two verses as a musical tribute to Ronnie, rather than simply praising him by talking to the crowd. It was never our intention to play the entire song and I assure you there was no agenda as to why we didn't play the solo. We felt it more important to play the better part of the melody of this song simply as a way to recognize how much we loved and respected Ronnie as the immense vocal talent he was. I miss him.
Dave, there are only a handful of singers in this entire world that I would ever want to hear do a Dio cover. You would have definitely been on that list and you didn't disappoint. I still miss him too and wish my teenage son could have seen him perform live. Glad he got to see you perform though and he said it was the best concert I've ever brought him to (San Juan Capistrano - April 2018). Note, I've brought him to see Priest, Maiden (twice), Scorpions w/Queensryche, and Sammy Hagar so that's saying a lot!
You are all class, Dave. This was an amazing tribute. I hope you continue to be appreciated by more and more people for the chapter you wrote and are writing in the annals of rock history. Blessings to you.
Honored that Dave Meniketti himself commented on this video. This was the best show (IMHO) of Sweden Rock 2010, Blackberry Smoke a close second. Thank you for the songs and the good times! \m/
dave and ronnie were friends.....i talked to dave about ronnie....gary moore....and of course his best friend phil.....3 incredible musicians gone....and mr meniketti is the definition of passion....greatest musician out there....
I saw Y&T for the first time in Ann Arbor Michigan in 1985 opening for Motley Crue at Chrysler Arena,...I never heard of them at the time and was amazed how Dave could sing and play a solo flawlessly with his eyes closed the whole time while he was singing...that band had so much heart live and I bought the albums immediately the next week...He is an amazing musician and they blew away Motley that night,..he is one badass Les Paul player that's for sure and that band never really got the recognition they really really deserved,...but through it all stayed real and true and passionate....I respect that.
Your story is amazing! I grew up in Michigan and saw that same show!! I agree with you they blew motley crue away that night! Nobody ever believes me when I tell them that Y&T was 100 percent better than motley crue that is what is so cool about your story! I have seen well over 350 concerts and still consider that Y&T show in my top 10!
Well..I think the crue did well...but meniketti opened my eyes...he was on it that night and it made a great impression on me as a musician....awesome hearing from someone who witnessed it too!
Erock Scott Right on! I grew up in the Bay Area, saw Y&T many times in the early 80's as they rose from the best club band you ever saw to being on the verge of making it huge. Unfortunately there was too much record company pressure on them to pretend they were a hair band and got off track in the mid 80's but early on they were pretty much what I would call part of the new wave of British heavy metal. Had they stayed that way and released Earthshaker, Black tiger and Mean Streak just a couple years later they would've been pretty close to being a household name. They were just that good but peaked too early. Anyways, one of the best concerts of my life was in the summer of Y&T's Meanstreak circa 83. I go back and forth on what was the best concert in my life... it's between this Y&T gig and a KISS club show in San Fransisco. Digressing, Great America, the Amusement park, used to have a summer concert series in a makeshift parking lot venue but it held quite a few people, probably in the thousands. It was a great summer night and when the band hit the stage it was madness, chaos, but in a great way. The crowd and the band were one but it was more than that. Their sound, their pure energy, was unbelievable when mixed with emotional power of their songs in context of the rock world of 1983. Prior to thrash or any of that. Y&T rocked as hard as any band up to that point in history and yet had some of the most moving melody's... just listen to "Forever." I can still see Dave swinging his guitar around, playing those licks during the verses of Open Fire, while singing and never missing a beat. Truly a moment in time that has forever been worthy of worship as no other musician I've seen has been so good as to appear to be having an out of body experience in which some other force was being channeled... Everywhere people always call them the most underrated band of all time so it's easy to feel bad for Meniketti but on the other hand, any human being that has been able to spend their entire adult life immersed in such a great body of musical and emotional art is a hero by any reasonable definition... From Winds of Change to Dirty Girls, from I Believe in You to Forever, from Meanstreak to Breaking Away, these guys were able to take a serious & honest heartfelt look at the male experience in the modern world and turn it into art during the early 80's. Sure, they sold out with Lipstick and Leather, etc. but overall, their body of work stands and burns brighter through the test of time because of the universal themes they explored with absolute integrity.
@@CapnFreak all 10 please..tanks....my fave = Y&T opening for ozzy, that was fukking mindblowing..never thought a half an hour could so facemelting...pity i dont have a recording of that one...
It's a shame that here in south america we know so little about Dave's work and Y&T, I found the band just by coincidence and now a day can't go by without listening to any of your songs (Y&T or Dave's albums). Thanks for your music, its amazing
Y&T plays Debaser Medis, Stockholm 24 october. Be there! Dave Meniketti is huge in my world. What an evil good player / singer /composer. He got it all. Great band.

I know this is the wrong platform to let you know that Ive been a fan since day one. At a time when everyone said that Blue Oyster Cult was the loudest band around, they were wrong. back in 76 I saw Yesterday And Today open up for Montrose (Jump On It Tour) at the Rio Theater, downtown Santa Cruz. Never heard of you guys before then, and I was quite impressed, so much so that I bought your first two 8 track tapes (Lmao, 8 tracks). Then I saw Y&T in Salinas Ca. still the loudest. Thanks Dave
Caught your show in Santa Cruz on Friday night. Had chills listening to "Winds of Change". On the drive home to the East Bay, hubby and I were talking about great rock singers and in addition to yourself, Ronnie James Dio's name came up who we had the pleasure of seeing years back. Finding this video is amazing because IMO, no one else could have done his songs justice as you did. Great tribute!
As a young lad, Y&T came to our fair in Napa and played before the Tubes..... You guys blew them out of the water and I was hooked. I have had the pleasure of catching you guys multiple times over the years. I very much enjoyed your collaboration with RJD on Hear N Aid, The Stars. You guys rocked it for a good cause. Keep on Rockin Dave, cause it's Gonna Save the World!!
As a HUGE fan of yours and Y&T (and love Dio songs too!) I was a little disappointed to not hear your version of the guitar solo, Like I and many others feel...YOU ARE THE MAN...But way cool of you to comment to your fans, and true fans always appreciate it and whatever else Y&T does...I hope to see you live on March 29th in Flint MI at the Machine Shop AND...FINALLY GET TO MEET YOU!!!....Met the rest of the band in 08'...Phil huged my dad and called him "big soul brother"...best memory yet!
Dave Meniketti, just like Rik Emmett and Randy Jackson (Zebra's Randy not the American Idol Clownboy). Great guitarists blessed with awesome voices as well. Its rare, but when it happens it sounds so good.
I saw them perform back in 2016 I believe and Dave was ‘sick’ and said he wasn’t 100%. He sounded amazing to me! I’d gladly see them again! I grew up w/ these guys and Dave is just a kick ass guitarist and singer.
Man. This is awesome. Thank you so much for recording this. An awesome, passionate performance of Rainbow in the Dark...in the middle of a rainstorm. Wow. The crowd must have been totally rocking out.
