The pianist is wrong. The solo part before the high C was played as if it was a lied (a piacere) full of rubato. He should play it as the orchestra would ;a tempo. The singer needs to know the precise timing to prepare well for the crucial moment. Here the languid accompaniment made the singer relax and finally cracked it. Unbelievable for a DG recording.

The description says that the debut album showcases this tenors breadth and depth but there is no breadth or depth in his singing. This is music thearte singing with a viel over it. The middle voice sounds estrogenized and the top has a knodel. Then we get virtue signalling and a sales pitch that this is how opera singing is really meant to sound. Its tits and teeth marketing. How can Deutsch grammphone get behind this? What backroom dealings are behind this recording? Could this tenor not even sing half of the aria without cracking on the acuti for the video promotion of the album? Evidently not.

Yes! Musical theatre is what came to my mind. Is this the future for tenor singing? He reminds me of Grigolo, crooning in the middle voice and his pianissimo is not supported and is more pop/musical than opera.

Funny how we don't hear the first part and his Italian needs work. I know the French accent is difficult to lose; however, they are very particular in making sure the French is correct when singing in the French style. Also his description is not correct. These men CHOSE to be poor. According to the book, they came from wealthy families. They gave up that life to become bohemians. That makes the tragedy of Mimi so much more great as the finances for a Dr. and her care were available. He also breaks the line at unconventional places. And let's face it, Rudolfo knew exactly what he was doing and what he wanted.

Be nicer. Also, what is Italian? Is 1896 Italian is Italian or 2021 Itailian is Italian. Is it Scribo or Scrivo? Also none of those men/women CHOSE poverty - they chose to pursue their artistic endeavors. Finances for Mimi were not readily available - try to break a relationship (with family or otherwise) and then restore it. Do kindly let us know how it goes. Also, none effective treatment for tuberculosis was available in 19th century. And Rudolfo did not know - "his treasure was stolen". You PROJECT. I think Benjamin does a pretty good job .

He is such a fine singer in the making. But it's hard singing this aria when everyone is going to measure him against every other tenor who has ever recorded Rudolfo. Not really fair. He has a beautiful voice, perhaps not heavy enough to everyone's taste for Puccini yet, but he'll get there. But it would be so nice to see him sing the aria without the meaningless 'semaphore' hand movements that are so unnecessary and that so many young singers feel they have to do to denote emotion. He should do the video again with his hands tied behind his back. All the art should come just with his voice, his line and expression, his eyes and his diction. And most of it is already almost there. Just no hands, please.
