  • OK, Gang, here’s a great time-lapse video of gluing up the first skin half on the Lockheed Vega!
When I saw it, my first questions were how long before the glue sets up, was there glue on the inside of the skin, and did you wipe any of it off? This was Kevin's response -
    1) How long before the glue sets up?
We had the room temp at about 65F, which gave us about an hour working time. The glue sets up enough for unclamping in 24 hours. Full cure in about a week.
    2) Was there glue on the inside of the skin?
The inside of the skin was pre-coated to accept the glue. Glue was applied to the structure at ample thickness to have great squeeze out.
    3) Did you wipe any of it off?
We did wipe off the squeeze out as required.
Here are Kevin’s comments that came with the video.
"This video clip is the entire process of putting a skin shell half on the Vega fuselage. Total time from start of glue mixing until we walk away was just over an hour. We had John mixing glue and pouring it into empty caulk gun tubes. Kallin then used a caulk gun to distribute the glue while Jim, Rick and I spread it out using notched trowels. Take note the order in which the glue was applied. We did the top center 3 feet or so from end to end first. This way, we were able to reach that area without learning into wet glue on the lower parts of the structure. Then Kallin put glue onto lower areas that we then spread out as before. The skin was brought in and placed on the frame, aligned with a screw at each end, then strapped and clamped in place. Once in place, we went inside and cleaned up and squeeze out or drips."
    Pretty cool! Enjoy the video.

Impressive. I count 50 clamps on each side and 15 on the end bulkhead. So 150 must be present.
The same pressing effect can be realised with many brass nails. Start at the spine in the middle, work towards front and tail, and after that downwards in both directions.
Potlife of the glue v.s. temperature and product size must be carefully adjusted.
The making of the skin itself looks to me of higher complexity. (scarfing, tolerances, dimensions).
