The best way to protect wild animals is to protect their environment: Knowland
Knowland Park is home to many native plants and animals, some of them are very rare. Unfortunately, the park and its wildlife are under threat from expansion of the Oakland Zoo.
It is home to the Alameda Whipsnake, Maritime Chaparral, the Methuselah Ring, and it is habitat for mountain lion and bobcat and many other native plants and animals. It is a small bit of unspoiled Californian habitat.
What is the story behind Knowland? Why did this land become a state park, why did the state hand it over to the city, and why is the zoo here?
The story is intriguing.
The zoo's website tells us that a man called Henry Snow, Big Game Hunter, founded the zoo in 1920 in downtown Oakland. The zoo moved to Joaquin Miller Park, and then moved to its current site in 1939, on land owned by the Bank of America. It wasn't until nine years later, in 1948 that the state of California purchased the land, and then leased it to the city, which in turn leased it to the zoological society.
