One of the powerful things about Time's Arrow is that Bojack will never know about it. But we do. None of it's event are ever going to be directly referenced by any characters, but we know, and it changes how we see EVERYTHING.
Yeah, made me despise Bojack even more than I already did, for the way he treated his mother, knowing how horrendously bad & terrifying her life was - Bojack's supposedly bad childhood was a walk in the park comparatively. Him abusing his mother is like abusing a military parent who came back from war with PTSD.
@@tyrant-den884 Yeah I know that. Still doesn't change the fact that he engaged in terrible elder abuse. I mean at that point she was just a troubled old lady with alzheimers who barely even knew who she was. If he wanted "payback" against her, why not say & do these while she was still in possession of her mental faculties? Instead he waits until she's weak & vulnerable & not even the same person anymore - because he's a typical cowardly bully.
@@Nihilakh4life How many people's lives has Bojack ruined? Sarah Lynn is dead directly because of him, he literally left her to die to save his own skin after getting her back onto drugs - and she was just a child when he started fucking up her mind. Say nothing of all the other people he's hurt. He's done waaay worse in his life than his mother ever did, hurt way more people. He didn't fix anything with Hollyhock - she hates him now & rightfully so; in fact, Beatrice is the reason Hollyhock had a good life. Also, I never let Beatrice off the hook for her abusive behaviour, my point was that Bojack could have gotten back at her while she was still herself, not when she was a very vulnerable Alzheimer's patient who barely remembers who she is.
That poem, "This Be The Verse", kinda hit me, because it's like a nega-version of something I remember my mother once saying; she said how, when her parents were growing up, they didn't have a lot of food and would often go hungry, so when they became parents, they always made sure their kids had enough to eat. My mother, in turn, would often lament that her parents rarely took her out travelling, seeing the world, have exciting experiences, so growing, my mom would often take me and my siblings on vacations to different countries, always making sure to plan a lot of sightseeing. She concluded that she thinks it's the responsibility of parents to give their children the thing they found missing in their own childhood
I love this show for many reasons but one of the biggest ones is just how personal it gets. The part that gets to me the most is the episode where Bojack convinces Kelsey to shoot the White House scene where it is revealed that Bojack can’t cry in front of other people, the same thing happened to me and I always tear up when Bojack is finally alone and cries his eyes out. I have had a lot of moments just like that one so I know how heartbroken Bojack must’ve been in that moment. It’s one of my favorite scenes in tv history.
The underwater one (somebody remind me), Time’s Arrow, Free Churro and the view from halfway down are some of the best Bojack episodes in my opinion because they’re so unique and use their own standalone methods of story telling to convey their story ideas.
I know you're a professional writer, so understanding and unpacking themes is probably something you can do with your eyes closed, but this analysis is so articulate it feels like it could be a part of a PhD thesis. Amazing work.

DAMN this video is next-level quality. I’m so glad I could find a video exploring these episodes because they impressed me so much. I’m a neuroscience and psychology major who works with patients with dementia and is studying to eventually become a psychiatrist. It is so rare that you find a show that is so good with realistic depictions of mental health and psychology, and Bojack had been killing it on that front since the time it started, but season 4 really kicked things up a notch. I was floored by how great the writing was and how topics like the ripple effects of generations of trauma, the experience of neurodegenerarion during dementia, and the terrors of PTSD were handled. It was so cool to hear a breakdown of the inspiration for these episodes as well as an analysis of how the writing worked so well. I’ve long since given up trying to be a writer but I am an actress and many of the pieces of advice you gave (especially “draw off of personal experience to make what you create authentic”) hold just as true for acting. Excellent video, man! I enjoyed it a lot.

This is a bit personal but as an artist, I always hate the fact that I'm pursuing psychology instead of just going into an art course, albeit the financial situation of our family will not really allow an opportunity for me to take one. But this video really opened my eyes that maybe, my entire course could be considered a research for the art I'l create and hopefully share to the world. Maybe the path I choose would serve as an inspiration for me to create art that is also meaningful to me.
No matter how independent you are physically or in your thinking, there will always be certain things you do or say that stem from your environment, especially your childhood one.
Both are correct. We are responsible for our own actions, but we are not wholly pure of nor immune to the influence of others. We can internalize behaviors from our parents or caregivers as early as ages 2-5. Child psychology is a fairly recent but astonishing field, especially when it comes to intergenerational trauma.
sometimes I feel gloomy exactly because I can remembre what happend to me, since I was little I learnd to put bad memories in the oblivion, forgeting all and don´t make questions now that i feel like to try to let those things out I just get with my closers telling me i should forget, gaslighting or making me feel like I am the one to blame and i don´t what to blame anyone i just would like to late those things clear. I don´t feel like I own myself.
I found that there was a big disconnect from the body of your video being a small psychoanalysis of bojack then suddenly “segwayed” to your thesis of the writers and how they used their life as inspiration. Were you referencing the arc of the show where bojack while having a traumatic life turns it to inspiration? If so then there was a big disconnect in your video. If not, can anyone mention what was the whole idea is with the content and its sequencing in mind?
I really want my mom to watch this show, since my grandma was similar to Beatrice with her (my mom broke the chain tho!). Fuck I love your videos, I've learned a great deal from them.
The Game of Thrones reference is an instant sub for me

The topic reminds me of Cioran
Trauma that isn't transformed is often transferred
sometimes I feel gloomy exactly because I can remembre what happend to me, since I was little I learnd to put bad memories in the oblivion, forgeting all and don´t make questions now that i feel like to try to let those things out I just get with my closers telling me i should forget, gaslighting or making me feel like I am the one to blame and i don´t what to blame anyone i just would like to late those things clear. I don´t feel like I own myself.
9:30 If there's something I want you to take away it's this *ad break* TH-cam Premium allows you to play videos in the background.
I think you might have discovered a new American classic.
You sound exactly like Maurice Broaddus! Awesome videos though!
I really want my mom to watch this show, since my grandma was similar to Beatrice with her (my mom broke the chain tho!).
But I know that as soon as I show it to her, she's just gonna tell me that these kind of shows aren't what she's into, and will probably laugh if I told her that it talked about problems similar to what she went through. Any suggestions?
