John Plantain’s career is batshit insane, I’m very glad he finally got covered in a video. Edward England emulated the legend of the Red Sea Man rover successfully taking both Muslim and EIC ships aboard his very own Fancy, Plantain emulated the Red Sea Man prince legend being a successful trader and African king waging wars throughout the island.
19:50 Dauphin here is the princely title of the infant royal heir of the french throne. The name comes from the region of Dauphiné in the french alps which was given to the royal heir thus the name! BTW the archéologue Jean Soulat who worked on Sainte Marie, The Speaker is preparing a new mission at Sainte Marie for 2024!
The intro song to this video is from a painting by Hieronymus Bosch, The Garden of Earthly Delights which is a Triptych, the musical notation appearing in the section depicting hell and is a score inscribed on someone's butt.
Great documentary of a very interesting topic. The quality of the recent content is absolutely excellent. BTW there seems to be a small hiccup in the subtitles at about 59:43 but nothing major. I hope these documentaries get the views they deserve. Cheers!
All the stories and history was great as always. But I really liked that little bit of you talking at the end while cutting up an orange lol that laugh at the end was so piratey. It was the perfect ratio of sinister intentions to joyous occasion.
I just wanted to say that this is one of my favorites episodes to date in my honest opinion, i mean the channel is very entertaining and interesting overall but there's always a few that stands out a bit for me and this one was definitely one of them (I must also say that I was quite hyped for this particular topic considering all the stories and figures around it) and especially when during a whole hour, really well done captain !
A big thank you from a Patreon supporter. I can't express how much I enjoy hearing real pirate history. The thought strikes me that with all the incredible factual stories about the Age of Sail (I think that's more accurate than 'Golden Age of Pirates' since piracy has been around like...forever) why the public has been fed an endless diet of fantasy? I'm trying to finish work on a series of historical novels that try to be based on some semblance of reality. Granted, I found myself hampered by the need for a coherent narrative with compelling characters, complex relationships and, of course, plenty of sex and violence. (I know what sells.) But I tried my best to at least capture the feeling of the period, and what a 'typical' pirate lad might experience. I used mostly names of various pirates, not paying any attention to correct times/places, but to 'honor', so to speak, some of the lesser known names of documented pirates. That shameless plug now ended, your documentaries have been excellent fodder for my second book, whereupon our now-not-so-young hero goes on the Pirate Round, and enters into the business of piracy in the 1690's. I think the interplay of international politics, economics, evolving technology, religion, etc. creates such a fertile field for the honest historical novelist that perhaps one day these amazing persons, representing every variant of the human species, can be more widely known beyond the world of that Spawn of the Devil, Walter Disney.
Being From Groningen, Northern Capitol city of the Dutch and Viking ancestors and my whole family Sailors and still owning big sailing ships my inspiration is triggered very sharp again cheers Ahoi!
Ethiopians, Persians, Somalis, Indians, Austranesians, Omani Arabs, and Arabs from Tylos ( modern-day Bahrain) had visited Madagascar by about 100 B.C. the ancient Arabs referred to it as the "Island of the Moon".
I didn't know ancient Arabs used boats, I know they were usually desert bandits but it makes sense they went to the oceans because they have horrible land for crops. It's pretty much a giant desert with a few good rivers
I wish Firaxis remade Pirates, this time with new features, expanded map to include far East and Africa, heck maybe even Europe, expanded timeframe including the 18th century and possibly beyond, and some new features like becoming the pirate king, establishing bases, commanding multiple fleets, etc!
@@homuraakemi493 A fan game? This would take some time. I've worked on Free Col for more than a decade. And since Sid Meier's Pirates is a proprietary game and he is still alive let's give him a chance. It's been 20 years. I think it's time :)
A very nice video, and well documented, however, concerning the original settlement of the Great Island, it is now scientifically proven that the first inhabitants were present at least 3500 to 4000 years before our era! Traces of butchery on bones of megafauna have been found at several archaeological sites scattered in several regions. Nice job! I live here since 1983, now @Fianarantsoa! ALôôôFô!
20:20 - “the port was named Dauphin in honor of king Louis XIV, then a child, and it means Dolphin”, I mean, doesn’t it mean Infant (as in, a son of a king)? I know the word for dolphin and Infant (son of a king) are the same or very similar, but if it’s in the king’s honor…
Have you read Batman : Leatherwing? You might want to give it a chance, maybe make a historical accuracy analysis like the AC 4 video, It's a batman story set in the 1500-1600 AD buccaneer era.
I'm done making media reviews, the AC4 one performed poorly and the recent long-form historical content performs really well. Nor are the media reviews especially fun to make since it's just deconstructing someone else's creative work instead of producing something new. They also attract an audience uninterested in the regular content, which is what I want to produce
Oh God for the first like second or two, I thought the intro song was gonna be the Spinal theme from the newest Killer Instinct….. which would be appropriate since he’s a skeleton pirate
Incredible video, well researched, with compelling story telling and interesting anecdotes. Aside from that, thank you so much for introducing us all to the “Butt Music” playing at the beginning. Lead me to an interesting rabbit hole into the painting itself, and of course it’s a beautiful piece of music. Very well done, good Sir.
It's a wooden stick with a metal bit at the end curled like a spring and terminating in a sharp spike - reminiscent of a worm - used to pull the wadding out of cannons, allowing the ball and powder to slip out, thus unloading the cannon.
I had wondered when Rediker would be mentioned... Anytime an author uses the word 'Dialectic' in the first 3 - 5 pages, you know you have a Marxist Anthropologist. He has some good ideas but always couched in his background ideology.
We still engage in slavery here in America. Private prisons rent out prisoners to corporations all over the country for profit. People try to act like its different but it really isnt.
It is different because slaves didn’t do anything to make themselves slaves, in theory. The prison system in America sucks and we need reform, but it’s not anywhere close to slavery in history.
IIRC the privatized prison system in America incentivizes harsher imprisonment for lighter crimes. I'm not well versed into this topic however. Speaking historically, criminals in West Africa were usually sold as slaves, I imagine it was the same at Madagascar.
I get not believing in piratopia, by why assume that they'd build harram fortresses? It seems like you've gone from one extreme to the other. Especially when the locals would take to western language and customs instead of treating them as weird rapists living in the woods. It seems way more likely that they'd integrate into the local culture after doing their bit as slaves.
the locals weren't one unit, Madagascar consists of several peoples with different entities within them, the fortresses were necessary to defend against rival tribes, or simply other pirates(see the Plantain story) or even colonial forces, this will become apparent in next month's biography
