Put your mines on highgrounds just as they come up, then they wont see the mines till they trigger. Have your teammates help you clear the creeps before the ramp if they go for base. If its only sents and not a gem you can also try putting mines in the areas where the gem-carrier goes less. (Their woods, going for their farmer and not their ganker). Putting mines just behind trees in juke paths also works against both gems and sents since the mines trigger through the trees, before line of sight is established.
to counter that, I usually buy observer + sentry wards, 1 quelling blade and smoke. When the path is clear of heroes, just pop a smoke and go on a dewarding spree. removing a ward with the quelling blade is faster and will not break smoke's invisibility. I ofter use this tactic when I'm level 7+ with soul ring and arcane boots and want to ward the enemy's jungle. Mining highgrounds on the enemy jungle is a guaranteed kill if they don't see you. Plus, it puts them in high alert, often making their supports go bankrupt from explosion PTSD.
