I am a Muslim Egyptian and very proud of our Coptic church. For me it resemble a link to our ancient Egyptians heritage and I am really thankful that they preserved the Egyptian language and many other traditions.
I like when I see a Muslim Egyptian brother or sister talk like this and have this mentality love. It gives me a fresh breath of air through all the tension and corrupted minds. Always praying to God to be more loving, respectful and peaceful citizens towards each other and be proud equally of our rich history and beloved country because we all came from the same greatest civilization in the world.
There is no difference between Muslims and Christians in Egypt. We are both Copts, same DNA same land and same culture. I am so proud of churches and how my country is standing against extremists

Great video! Copts are a very important link. Although every new religion, that Egyptians were accepting, was bringing, also, a new cultural identity, in case of Christianity it enabled preservation of the old one. They use modified Greek alphabet with adition of letters for phonems that do not exist in the Greek language. That alphabet enabled disciphering earlier stages of Egyptian language and symbols that were used as you mentioned in the video. I would say that they are a bit more liberal part of Egyptian society. Nowdays they have equal rights although some old “relics” still exist like number of Copts in the military compared to the total population. I don’t know is that true but I have found an information that the Coptic language is preserved in spoken form in couple of vilages close to Luxor. Copts definetely deserve more of your videos.

Great video!! I’ve been enjoying your videos for quite some time now. I’m Egyptian/American, born in Shubra, where Muslims and Christians lived side by side. You should visit Shubra and see that for yourself. Even though we’re not Christian, I’ve had nothing but respect for my Christian neighbors. Thanks to my mom for making sure I learned about their traditions, which were different from ours. Grateful for the work you put into your videos. The filming and editing have certainly improved ❤ Maybe our paths will cross one day when I visit Egypt.

This is really good. I plan to visit Egypt in a couple months to see a friend and we’ve been talking for years because she’s Muslim and I’m Christian. I never understood how in a mostly Islamic culture they could still allow Christians if the belief wasn’t the same but this history explains so much. I really appreciate this🙏🏿

@@fadyromany8345 Yes, since discovering the existence of this monastery, I now do plan to make a road trip to the monastery! I think I would make a several day trip of it though, so I could enjoy and explore a bit. Then I would also have time to visit the Monastery of St. Paul 😁 I have so many trips I want to make, it's just about finding the time to make them all. And you are right, I do not want to drive in the summer heat! 😂 But I want to make a trip to the Nile Delta and visit places like Zagazig, Tanis and Damietta. Another trip northwest to Marsa Matruh, passing through Al Alamein and other coastal cities. If I could take enough time off, I would even like to make it to Siwa (I've been there before, but I took a bus that time). This fall I would really like to drive to Jordan, but there are a lot of logistical issues with that trip, like passing through the Sinai Peninsula (I need a special permit to do that). I think I can probably only take one trip a year for these longer journeys, but there are many I would like to make. So much to explore! ❤

This was a very difficult video to make, not only due to it's sensitive nature and it's very long history, but because I wanted to represent, as accurately as possible, so many aspects about Coptic Christians here. In my previous comment it was mentioned that Copts are a link to understand ancient Egypt and their language. However, they are also a link to understand some Muslim practices. Since early days it was important for early Muslims to be close to Christians. The first mosque in Egypt was built in Fustat just outside of the area called Coptic Cairo. Minbars, mihrabs, minarets and other things originate from Coptic and Oriental Orthodox Christianity traditions. A fun fact is that Copts have their music notations for their hymns and chants. Unlike other Orthodox Christians they use music instruments but just rhytm instrumets like triangles and cymbals. Their liturgical practices are influenced by the Greek language and some of their hymns are completely in Greek. Recently Copts celebrated Easter. (May 5th). They use a Greek greeting (C)Hristos anesti! and respond with Alithos anesti! (Christ is risen! Indeed he is risen!) . That greeting is used long time after Easter among Orthodox Christians. BTW, to all Copts I wish: Ⲭ̀ⲣⲓⲥⲧⲟⲥ Ⲁ̀ⲛⲉⲥⲧⲏ !

People who do not know about christianity in egypt hardly know anything serious about christianity. Egypt always was strong center of christianity in the first centuries and still is. After council of chalcedon and islamic invation it just was too isolated from western world. Egypt alwahs has played extremeyl important role in christianity.
Then a lot of people don't know anything about Christianity, because I've met plenty of people here who did not realize there is still a fairly large community of Christians here today. Of course, many people know of the ancient past, Mary Joseph and Jesus passing through here as a baby, small things like that, but I have met plenty of people who are not aware of the CURRENT state of Christianity in Egypt.

Truly people dont know about christianity in Egypt and its good someone is talking about. Coptic Orthodoxy is propably also most authentic christianity.

Thanks for this video, it might be interesting to know about the last village in Egypt who kept the original late coptic pronunciation until now! Make searches on Alzeniya village in Luxor, you are going to be amazed of its story with old coptic pronunciation tradition. Btw I'm muslim and I speak coptic fluently :)

@@Gventures Yes I do speak coptic I have learnt from books of course as there are no more native speakers alive left. I learnt coptic because it's our original language and of course because it's the language of the great pharaohs. You can see videos of me speaking in coptic and there is one video talking about the original pronunciation or the old pronunciation of coptic which still conserved in the Zeniya village. And I'm not the only one who can speak coptic there is one family reviving the late pronunciation of coptic in Akhmim (Suhaj governate) and other family has revived already the modified Greco-Bohairic coptic (the Modern pronunciation of coptic now in church) I know I'm running over many terms that might be unclear but sorry here is not the best place to explain :D

In 2014, in a video on TH-cam, the Mufti of the Republic said that more than 12.5% of Egyptians have left Islam.

Hmm, definitely informative. :) Not twenty minutes from my house here in Houston, TX, there's a Coptic Church. That said, if you ever want to dig a little deeper on the academic side of it, I'd recommend talking to Dr. Tamara Siuda, as they're a Coptologist and Egyptologist that I follow. That said, I wonder if anyone still holds the old beliefs of the pharaohs there, even in just a superstition or clandestine. Probably isn't safe for them if they are fully that, though. One day I will visit Egypt with my temple. Just gotta save up.
Alexandria has VERY FEW hostels. When I first when to Alex in 2021, there was only one: Ithaka Hostel. There is now another hostel there called Egyptus Villa Hostel, but I have never been there to check it out myself. I will say that Ithaka Hostel isn't the greatest hostel I have been to. Limited bathrooms, not the cleanest place on earth, and the social environment can be a bit lacking. I met quite a few people that were staying there long term while studying Arabic, so it was almost treated as more of a home for them than anything else. That being said, I have also met some cool people staying at Ithaka, and it is right along the Corniche just across from the sea, which is visible from some of the balconies in the rooms. I found the prices of entrances to museums and monuments quite cheap, the uber or taxi also cheap, but when I look for tour guides and group tours, then, or they do not go to all the places I would prefer, going to others that I do not want, and also the costs are really really expensive if compared with the costs when doing by ourselves. So I would prefer to pay an amount of money to a driver. And in some monuments, if there will be a guide, next to the entrance I would pay it separately too. I found the trips with groups and guides too much time doing things I maybe not be that much interested to do specially because I only have 3 days to do it so I needed to tell "look, I would like to visit this, and this and this", to adjust the "tour" to my interests. Thanks for any help.
I wish I could help, but I have actually never hired a private driver, so I have no contacts. Since I bought my motorcycle here, I always drive that around, and before I bought my motorcycle, I always took Uber motorcycle to get around, or took public transportation, like the train. Tour agencies and guides are always expensive, but if you want a tour guide, I would suggest paying for one through an actual company, and not the people lingering outside museums and ancient sites. I did that once, and the tour guide was not good at all. Possibly hard to understand the accent or not the best English, most of the things she said I had already read on Wikipedia, she added no new knowledge, and I think she was just making some stuff up on the spot. She claimed she had a masters in Hieroglyphics, which I highly doubt, why would she be sitting outside waiting for people coming in if she had that level of education, she could just go get a job with a company and get paid much more. She also kept referencing Christianity and the Virgin Mary at ancient Egyptians sites (somehow trying to connect the two?), it was just all very weird. But you are correct, if you want to create your own tour, it is much more expensive. If I were you, I would just take Uber where you want to go. But if you absolutely require a private driver, then I wish you luck in your search! And sorry I couldn't help you there. All the best 🙏
@@Gventures No say sorry I know you are always on bike and I say thank you for your videos. Exactly for them, I see it is possible to do it by ourselves but the "scammers" made me the wish to or to find someone to indicate me a known private driver or to go to the tours. As I said, the problem about tours, is that they have their places specified and sometimes when I find something close to what I want, then other place is missing (for example I wanted to find a tour that would include Isis temple, Kom Ombo temple and Horus temple but or I only find with Isis and Horus without Kom Ombo or the last 2 without Isis). Even if I just stayed 1 hour inside them just to have a "glance" so I must find a driver to hire. Maybe I will try to find an Uber for example and ask him if he would drive me all day in Cairo, and then when in Luxor, to find a taxi driver. Abu Simbel I will go with an organized tour. I found it too far and complicated to go by myself. Thanks a lot. If you wish to be my guide in Cairo, we can use Uber hehe. Or just to take a coffee. Anyway thanks for your videos, you are very natural, friendly, easygoing, so, definitely an unsnobbish person!!! Was great to find your channel and to follow it.
@@Edik_San Actually yes that's a very good idea, make a deal with an Uber driver, many of them will offer you their number so you can call them later, so if speak to them about paying them for the day a good price and tell them where you want to go, I am sure you will be able to find someone willing to do that (as long as their English is good enough to communicate what you want). Ahaha, I'm a terrible guide, but maybe if I have time for coffee. These days I've been so busy, it's absolutely crazy 😅But I really appreciate your support and am happy you are going to be able to experience Egypt, I love this country so much 😊
How interesting! I had no idea security guards checked ID or needed proof of religion. I suppose it must depend on the specific church and the specific time/occasion. I've attended events at churches, been at a church where a friend was helping design and teach choreography for an event, and attended multiple weddings and funerals, as well as visiting historical churches, and was never asked for ID. At times I was even wearing a hijab, so it was clear I was Muslim. Awesome video as always. I love that you interviewed a friend to give us an everyman perspective, not an expert.
Yeah, perhaps it does depend on the church. All I know is, there are security personnel outside any church I have entered here in Egypt, and they did check my ID. But it could vary. I have attended Christian weddings where of course their Muslim friends attended, and to my knowledge they weren't checking ID's, just asking "Here for the wedding?" and then allowed to pass. I didn't intend to imply Muslims are not allowed into churches, but just on a regular, normal day, I have seen them check ID's. It's a murky area that I don't know everything about, but it's something I have encountered here that I have not encountered in other countries. Thanks so much for watching and your input! ❤

Very good introduction concerning coptic christians, muslims. christians and jews were always living in harmony in Egypt. Djizya meaning was corrupted by called "orientalists", christians and jews were perfectly protected and free to practice, just remember jews during the 15th century find protection in north muslim africa when slaughtered in europe.
Agree to disagree. Less persecution than in Europe? Sure. But just because someone isn't getting slaughtered doesn't mean they aren't being persecuted.
One thing I found interesting was I was told several times that Coptics are not Arab. I assume Arab means Muslim now. I didn't know that before going to Egypt. Great video and I'm seeing visions of Christiane Amanpour in your future.
@@rashaaaro8976 Yes, the Arabs came to Egypt around the year 640, but Egyptians are not Arab. Although they of course did mix with Egyptians over the past 1,400 years, so many Egyptians have some Arab blood in them, but Egyptians are not ethnically Arab. At all.

I am a Muslim Egyptian and very proud of our Coptic church. For me it resemble a link to our ancient Egyptians heritage and I am really thankful that they preserved the Egyptian language and many other traditions.

Great video! Copts are a very important link. Although every new religion, that Egyptians were accepting, was bringing, also, a new cultural identity, in case of Christianity it enabled preservation of the old one. They use modified Greek alphabet with adition of letters for phonems that do not exist in the Greek language. That alphabet enabled disciphering earlier stages of Egyptian language and symbols that were used as you mentioned in the video. I would say that they are a bit more liberal part of Egyptian society. Nowdays they have equal rights although some old “relics” still exist like number of Copts in the military compared to the total population. I don’t know is that true but I have found an information that the Coptic language is preserved in spoken form in couple of vilages close to Luxor. Copts definetely deserve more of your videos.

When I travel around the world I always being surprised that people don’t know that rich history in Egypt especially Christianity in Egypt. I am proud that I am direct related to Pharos. Also even if our percent is like 10% of the population which I highly doubt it because our government is corrupted for many years. We will still fill countries with our numbers 10% it is like 15 million Christians in Egypt. Also some of our Coptic words still survived in the daily life in current Egyptian Arabic dialect. You should visit Shubra and see that for yourself. Even though we’re not Christian, I’ve had nothing but respect for my Christian neighbors. Thanks to my mom for making sure I learned about their traditions, which were different from ours. Grateful for the work you put into your videos. You should plan a ride to the Monastery of Saint Anthony the great; if you like highways and mountains you'd like that ride... But not in July like I did, if the hot weather scares you much 😅
You'd also stretch more to the Monastery of St. Paul after it, but I returned in same day so didn't have much time
@@fadyromany8345 Yes, since discovering the existence of this monastery, I now do plan to make a road trip to the monastery! I think I would make a several day trip of it though, so I could enjoy and explore a bit. Then I would also have time to visit the Monastery of St. Paul 😁 I have so many trips I want to make, it's just about finding the time to make them all. And you are right, I do not want to drive in the summer heat! 😂 But I want to make a trip to the Nile Delta and visit places like Zagazig, Tanis and Damietta. Another trip northwest to Marsa Matruh, passing through Al Alamein and other coastal cities. If I could take enough time off, I would even like to make it to Siwa (I've been there before, but I took a bus that time). This fall I would really like to drive to Jordan, but there are a lot of logistical issues with that trip, like passing through the Sinai Peninsula (I need a special permit to do that). I think I can probably only take one trip a year for these longer journeys, but there are many I would like to make. So much to explore! ❤

In my previous comment it was mentioned that Copts are a link to understand ancient Egypt and their language. However, they are also a link to understand some Muslim practices.
Since early days it was important for early Muslims to be close to Christians. The first mosque in Egypt was built in Fustat just outside of the area called Coptic Cairo. Minbars, mihrabs, minarets and other things originate from Coptic and Oriental Orthodox Christianity traditions.
A fun fact is that Copts have their music notations for their hymns and chants. Unlike other Orthodox Christians they use music instruments but just rhytm instrumets like triangles and cymbals. Their liturgical practices are influenced by the Greek language and some of their hymns are completely in Greek. Recently Copts celebrated Easter. (May 5th). They use a Greek greeting (C)Hristos anesti! and respond with Alithos anesti! (Christ is risen! Indeed he is risen!) . That greeting is used long time after Easter among Orthodox Christians. BTW, to all Copts I wish:

Not true at all just few weeks ago some copts homes were burned down while people inside by a mub just for a rumor that copts of this village are trying to build a Church

People who do not know about christianity in egypt hardly know anything serious about christianity. Egypt always was strong center of christianity in the first centuries and still is. After council of chalcedon and islamic invation it just was too isolated from western world. Egypt alwahs has played extremeyl important role in christianity.
Then a lot of people don't know anything about Christianity, because I've met plenty of people here who did not realize there is still a fairly large community of Christians here today. Of course, many people know of the ancient past, Mary Joseph and Jesus passing through here as a baby, small things like that, but I have met plenty of people who are not aware of the CURRENT state of Christianity in Egypt.
@@Gventures i think you are right. And of I course exaggerated but at least they dont know about church history which is quite essential part of christianity. I was very glad you talked about this. Truly people dont know about christianity in Egypt and its good someone is talking about. Coptic Orthodoxy is propably also most authentic christianity.

Coptic is first and foremost an ethnicity. As you said, Muslim Egyptians are ethnic Copts whose ancestors converted to Islam. Though the majority of Egyptian Christians are Orthodox, there is also a Coptic Catholic Church that is in full communion with Rome! Alex seems like a kind spirit and I really enjoyed your exchange with him. Don’t let any comments from biased individuals whose feelings were hurt by historical facts discourage you. It reminded me of some Coptic friends I had years ago, who ran the delightfully eccentric Windsor Hotel on Alfi Bey Street, Cairo. It’s like walking into an Agatha Christie novel, with very little changed since the British left Egypt. A few people are trying to find out if this amazing place is still open. Yes I do speak coptic I have learnt from books of course as there are no more native speakers alive left.
I learnt coptic because it's our original language and of course because it's the language of the great pharaohs.
You can see videos of me speaking in coptic and there is one video talking about the original pronunciation or the old pronunciation of coptic which still conserved in the Zeniya village.
And I'm not the only one who can speak coptic there is one family reviving the late pronunciation of coptic in Akhmim (Suhaj governate) and other family has revived already the modified Greco-Bohairic coptic (the Modern pronunciation of coptic now in church) I know I'm running over many terms that might be unclear but sorry here is not the best place to explain :D

I am the same Adeni in the previous comment, and I am an Egyptian from a village in the countryside next to Mansoura. In fact, we are increasing very much. I was recently on the live For an atheist on Tik Tok, and he had two million and a hundred thousand likes. In 2014, in a video on TH-cam, the Mufti of the Republic said that more than 12.5% of Egyptians have left Islam.

Hmm, definitely informative. :) Not twenty minutes from my house here in Houston, TX, there's a Coptic Church. That said, if you ever want to dig a little deeper on the academic side of it, I'd recommend talking to Dr. Tamara Siuda, as they're a Coptologist and Egyptologist that I follow.
That said, I wonder if anyone still holds the old beliefs of the pharaohs there, even in just a superstition or clandestine. Probably isn't safe for them if they are fully that, though.
One day I will visit Egypt with my temple. Just gotta save up.

Alexandria has VERY FEW hostels. When I first when to Alex in 2021, there was only one: Ithaka Hostel. There is now another hostel there called Egyptus Villa Hostel, but I have never been there to check it out myself. I will say that Ithaka Hostel isn't the greatest hostel I have been to. Limited bathrooms, not the cleanest place on earth, and the social environment can be a bit lacking. I met quite a few people that were staying there long term while studying Arabic, so it was almost treated as more of a home for them than anything else. That being said, I have also met some cool people staying at Ithaka, and it is right along the Corniche just across from the sea, which is visible from some of the balconies in the rooms. If you like going for walks to explore the city, consider walking to the catacombs, you'll see different parts of the city on that walk and I enjoyed it when I did it myself. If you do that, I suggest arriving to the catacombs as soon as they open. Little to no people for the first 20 mins or half hour, so you have silence and explore catacombs as they should be, without a bunch of yelling people. Also the fish market is awesome! But there's so much to see.

Um, I'm honestly not sure about prices for a private room, but you can find the prices listed on sites like booking.com, agoda.com, or hostelworld.com. Sometimes, private rooms in hostels can actually be more expensive than a hotel room, so make sure to check local, budget hotels and stuff if the prices for private rooms in hostels are too high.Good luck....

Going to Giza and Cairo for just 3 days next week, could you recommend a private driver, please? I found the prices of entrances to museums and monuments quite cheap, the uber or taxi also cheap, but when I look for tour guides and group tours, then, or they do not go to all the places I would prefer, going to others that I do not want, and also the costs are really really expensive if compared with the costs when doing by ourselves. So I would prefer to pay an amount of money to a driver. And in some monuments, if there will be a guide, next to the entrance I would pay it separately too. I found the trips with groups and guides too much time doing things I maybe not be that much interested to do specially because I only have 3 days to do it so I needed to tell "look, I would like to visit this, and this and this", to adjust the "tour" to my interests. Thanks for any help.
I wish I could help, but I have actually never hired a private driver, so I have no contacts. Since I bought my motorcycle here, I always drive that around, and before I bought my motorcycle, I always took Uber motorcycle to get around, or took public transportation, like the train. Tour agencies and guides are always expensive, but if you want a tour guide, I would suggest paying for one through an actual company, and not the people lingering outside museums and ancient sites. I did that once, and the tour guide was not good at all. Possibly hard to understand the accent or not the best English, most of the things she said I had already read on Wikipedia, she added no new knowledge, and I think she was just making some stuff up on the spot. She claimed she had a masters in Hieroglyphics, which I highly doubt, why would she be sitting outside waiting for people coming in if she had that level of education, she could just go get a job with a company and get paid much more. She also kept referencing Christianity and the Virgin Mary at ancient Egyptians sites (somehow trying to connect the two?), it was just all very weird. But you are correct, if you want to create your own tour, it is much more expensive. If I were you, I would just take Uber where you want to go. But if you absolutely require a private driver, then I wish you luck in your search! And sorry I couldn't help you there. All the best 🙏

Exactly for them, I see it is possible to do it by ourselves but the "scammers" made me the wish to or to find someone to indicate me a known private driver or to go to the tours. As I said, the problem about tours, is that they have their places specified and sometimes when I find something close to what I want, then other place is missing (for example I wanted to find a tour that would include Isis temple, Kom Ombo temple and Horus temple but or I only find with Isis and Horus without Kom Ombo or the last 2 without Isis). Even if I just stayed 1 hour inside them just to have a "glance" so I must find a driver to hire. Maybe I will try to find an Uber for example and ask him if he would drive me all day in Cairo, and then when in Luxor, to find a taxi driver. Abu Simbel I will go with an organized tour. I found it too far and complicated to go by myself. Thanks a lot. If you wish to be my guide in Cairo, we can use Uber hehe. Or just to take a coffee. @@Edik_San Actually yes that's a very good idea, make a deal with an Uber driver, many of them will offer you their number so you can call them later, so if speak to them about paying them for the day a good price and tell them where you want to go, I am sure you will be able to find someone willing to do that (as long as their English is good enough to communicate what you want). Ahaha, I'm a terrible guide, but maybe if I have time for coffee. These days I've been so busy, it's absolutely crazy 😅But I really appreciate your support and am happy you are going to be able to experience Egypt, I love this country so much 😊
How interesting! I had no idea security guards checked ID or needed proof of religion.
I suppose it must depend on the specific church and the specific time/occasion.
I've attended events at churches, been at a church where a friend was helping design and teach choreography for an event, and attended multiple weddings and funerals, as well as visiting historical churches, and was never asked for ID. At times I was even wearing a hijab, so it was clear I was Muslim.

Yeah, perhaps it does depend on the church. All I know is, there are security personnel outside any church I have entered here in Egypt, and they did check my ID. But it could vary. I have attended Christian weddings where of course their Muslim friends attended, and to my knowledge they weren't checking ID's, just asking "Here for the wedding?" and then allowed to pass. I didn't intend to imply Muslims are not allowed into churches, but just on a regular, normal day, I have seen them check ID's. It's a murky area that I don't know everything about, but it's something I have encountered here that I have not encountered in other countries. Thanks so much for watching and your input! ❤

Very good introduction concerning coptic christians, muslims. christians and jews were always living in harmony in Egypt. Djizya meaning was corrupted by called "orientalists", christians and jews were perfectly protected and free to practice, just remember jews during the 15th century find protection in north muslim africa when slaughtered in europe.
Agree to disagree. Less persecution than in Europe? Sure. But just because someone isn't getting slaughtered doesn't mean they aren't being persecuted.
One thing I found interesting was I was told several times that Coptics are not Arab. I assume Arab means Muslim now. I didn't know that before going to Egypt. Great video and I'm seeing visions of Christiane Amanpour in your future.

@@rashaaaro8976 Yes, the Arabs came to Egypt around the year 640, but Egyptians are not Arab. Although they of course did mix with Egyptians over the past 1,400 years, so many Egyptians have some Arab blood in them, but Egyptians are not ethnically Arab. At all.
