I took my parents to Choctaw recently. Bankroll was 3K. I wasn't looking for a handpay, but guess what? About 3 hours into our trip I was playing on a circus machine $1 dollar denom and going thru the bets...I was up a bit, around $500 and hit $15.5K on a $16 dollar spin (second spin at that denom). My first handpay and was in a state of shock, as were my parents. Like I said, I wasn't chasing it and it finally came after many years of going to Vegas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. What a feeling. But, I 'm keeping 5K back for taxes next year in a savings account....

I shoot for the 8 or 9 hundred $ pays. My wife is into the 'handpays'. A couple of years ago she had a fantastic year at the casinos and was so proud of her wins.....until tax time came...and for us folks over 65, remember that 'handpays' are added to your total income for the year come tax time and there is no deduction (W/L) for that as far as Medicare is concerned. We got hammered for our monthly contribution for Medicare for an entire year as we won enough to put us into the higher income bracket.

I usually take around $300 and bet $0.50-$3 per spin. Hit a $1500 handpay on a $0.50 bet, so YES it CAN happen, and several big wins just under handpay level at various bets. My strategy is to gamble about half of the big wins for a bigger win, but make sure I bring home half profit, if I do hit. I tell myself, "I had to take a chance", but also leave happy with the win in the end. Gamble smart friends!

Love all your videos, they’re so very helpful.
Here’s something I just learned for those on Medicare hitting hand pays. Medicare Part B premiums are based on your MAGI. MAGI is AGI with certain income categories added back. Like exempt interest. And gambling winnings .. losses are excluded from MAGI calculations.
Even though my W/L balances out and not paying any taxes on those wins, I had several hand pays over $10K, so I’ll be paying a lot more for Medicare B in 2024.
This may be helpful to someone not knowing about hand pays and being on Medicare.

@@bingobecky1564 I should have first said that this applies to people who itemize their deductions.
Let’s say your total income is $100k and your hand pays total is 20K. Your W/L statement indicates you lost 20k, so no taxes are due, but now, your income is 120K, that’s what Medicare will look at to determine your monthly payment. You can google Medicare premium income limits and see how it may apply to you. Because I won a specific amount it put me into another tax bracket for Medicare income limits.

Thank you for saying this. I am the lowest of low rollers and I have gotten several hand pay jackpots. A 1500 keno hit on a .20 bet and over 9 grand on a $3 slot bet. Handpays are only fun when they are profitable. Even with that, my favorite wins are the ones that came under the wire. 😊

This is only for lottery. Lottery gets W-2 G at $600 AND 300 times wager. VLTs are lottery, so any winning $600 on a $1 wager will get a W-2 G while winning $900 on a $5 wager will not. You are supposed to report all winning regardless of whether or not the casino gave you a W-2 G.

Absolutely spot on, Marc - On 3 visits to Vegas from the UK since last August, I've managed to get 3 handpays (tax free thankfully, coz I'm a Brit). First on a $2.40 spin, got me $2,440 win. Second, on an older Quick Hits machine on max bet of $1.50 netted me $4400, and then the biggest bet of $3.00 on Buffalo Gold got me just under $2,000. It's down to pure luck - when some TH-camrs are celebrating a handpay of, say, $1400, but are betting $25 a spin, I despair. I always judge a win on the bet multiplier! Cheers

You don't necessarily have to pay taxes on your handpays. At the end of the year, you can also declare your gambling losses up to the amount of your handpays when you itemize your tax deductions. It pays to have a players card at the casinos because they will provide profit & loss statements at the end of the year. Otherwise, this is great advise - don't chase handpays; you'll jprobably just wind up losing a whole lot of money.

    • @GambleSmart
      @GambleSmart  28 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Yes, but only if your standard deduction isn't higher (it isn't for most gamblers) and you have enough losses to offset all the wins, plus it still increasing your gross income, so could push you into higher tax bracket. :)

Mr Mike Slots recently went to the Bahamas and he said there are no taxes unless you win at least $10k there. He plays higher bets and got several wins that would have been taxable in the U.S. but not there. $1200 is just too low in 2024. Maybe in 1984 that was a lot of money but it’s not hard to win that now especially in a high limit room. Doesn’t mean you’ll profit but do $25 spins(or higher)and I can almost guarantee you’ll get a handpay almost every casino trip.

@@gregrowe1168 Just because he wasn't issued a W2-G for the wins in a different country doesn't mean he doesn't owe taxes. It's still considered income and by law should be reported to the IRS. The catch is the IRS doesn't have any record of you receiving this income so they have no easy way of tracking it without the casino issuing a W2-G. But that doesn't mean they couldn't track it down if they wanted to.

Because it won more than 300 times what you bet…but if you won $1500 on a $10 bet, although it is more than $1200, but is a hand pay with no w-2 issued… because is less than 300 times win…therefore, no need to file the tax on it… also if you had 3 hand pay with W-2s, but the end of the year, you can get the club member statement, if the lost during the year more than the W-2 money, you can claim the winning and also claim the gamble lost at the same time… I had 2 smaller amount last year $600 and $900 with w2s, but my friend, she had numerous $2000 or $3000 won, but she never got a w-2 because she bet $18 or $27 bet…..this might not for all other states…correct me if I am wrong…

Perfect timing for your video Marc. 🙂👍 I literally came home today from the Toronto's Casino Resort in Canada where I live. Usually I would stay most of the time at the casino for around 4 hours sometimes more depending on the day of the week and I notice a lot of gamblers trying to chase the progressive jackpots on the slot machines even though in the vast majority of cases it doesn't happen at all especially on the lower bet sizes. I myself always focus on the odds of the game and the smaller wins.

I started doing that again. My first hand pay was when I visited Vegas just having fun, right before heading to the room. It was around $1300, which was cool, but at that time I was having fun. I started to try and chase more of those with high progressives and don’t get much, plus stopped having fun playing games I hate. Now I just take it back to basics and celebrate any wins that double me up. It allows the worry to go away and play a lot more games without worrying about jackpots or hand pays.

Never had a hand pay. My wife and I make a 2 hour drive to Bally's Evansville once or sometimes twice a month. There are casinos much closer to us, but we've established our comps at Bally's and we really enjoy Evansville. 4 of the last 5 times we've been there I've hit just shy of a hand pay $900 - $1100. That's worth more to me than the hassle of tax forms and reporting a $2000 hit.

I'd prefer to hit three $400 bonuses than one $1,200 hand pay. In Louisiana, the state tax is 6%. That's in addition to the 24% to the feds. On a $1,200 handpay, you would pay $288 to the feds, $72 to the state and walk away with only $840. Numbers don't lie!

Until i got my first hand pay i really really focused on it getting it. When i did it was a $4 bet and a complete surprise.
More than 70% of hand pays I've received have been on smaller bets, $2, $1, $4, $5.
Then i was obsessed with getting a Grand jackpot. FINALLY got one by filling the screen - $2 bet.
Based on my track record I stay with smaller bets.

One correction, you are required to report ALL gambling winnings and have a record regardless of receiving a W2-G or not. The reality though is most recreational gamblers do not report their winnings without having received a W2-G. Hopefully the SLOT act will pass congress and increase the W2-G minimum threshold to $5000 or $5800 instead of the $1200 that's been the same since it started in 1977. 🙄

    • @kevinb4079
