    Lyrics:
As I sat sadly by her side
At the window, through the glass
She stroked a kitten in her lap
And we watched the world as it fell past
Softly she spoke these words to me
And with brand new eyes, open wide
We pressed our faces to the glass
As I sat sadly by her side
    She said,”Father, mother, sister, brother,
    Uncle, aunt, nephew, niece,
    Soldier, sailor, physician, labourer,
    Actor, scientist, mechanic, priest
Earth and moon and sun and stars
Planets and comets with tails blazing
    All are there forever falling
    Falling lovely and amazing”
Then she smiled and turned to me
And waited for me to reply
Her hair was falling down her shoulders
As I sat sadly by her side
As I sat sadly by her side
The kitten she did gently pass
Over to me and again we pressed
Our different faces to the glass
“That may be very well”, I said
“But watch the one falling in the street
See him gesture to his neighbours
See him trampled beneath their feet
All outward motion connects to nothing
For each is concerned with their immediate need
Witness the man reaching up from the gutter
See the other one stumbling on who can not see”
With trembling hand I turned toward her
And pushed the hair out of her eyes
The kitten jumped back to her lap
As I sat sadly by her side
Then she drew the curtains down
And said, “When will you ever learn
That what happens there beyond the glass
Is simply none of your concern?
God has given you but one heart
You are not a home for the hearts of your
    brothers
And God does not care for your benevolence
Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others
Nor does he care for you to sit
At windows in judgement of the world He created
While sorrows pile up around you
    Ugly, useless and over-inflated”
At which she turned her head away
Great tears leaping from her eyes
I could not wipe the smile from my face
As I sat sadly by her side

Nick Cave is a vocalist as well as performance artist. He never needed complicated choreography, you just see him being himself and it’s a work of art.

It's a pity artists like Nick Cave, Bowie, Lou Reed, Scott Walker etc. never get the status of national treasure in their lifetime because of their controversial past. Ironically they all share certain roots with Jacques Brel, a performer, poet, song writer, who WAS called a national treasure in his lifetime (after the passing of Edith Piaf).

I still feel that Nick Cave is one of if not definitively the best song writer of my generation. Of course this is incredibly about perspective, but for my life experiences of of perceived tragedy and despair, Mr. Cave and his band wizards. (Warren Ellis and Mick Harvey are amazing musicians). I wish that I couldn't relate to the music. I wish I could just enjoy the art as it is, just art. Cave's lyrics just flow effortlessly like silk across ice. Thank you for contributing to the soundtrack of my life. I wish I had provided better source martial, not that you know or even care. But thank you, your music and art are amazing.

I do think that this is his masterpiece, with its incredible lyrics and stunning melody. the song is both saddening and relieving at the same time.
full of anger, disapointment, expectation, love, resentment, compassion, sorrow while questioning religion, humanity, existance whatsoever.
full of issues, that's my Nick.

My cousin died first week I was in the army. The whole year turned my life upside down. I saw dreams, prophecies that came true. I cried on my future ex-wife arms drunk: I don't want to see dreams anymore.
All that horrible, horrible year, I found and listened: No More Shall We Part.
The time, the place, the record, the sound, the sorrow, the cry, all of it comes back to me with a single piano tune. I was a young man twenty years ago. I will never be the same. Thank god I have this record to remind me what was so terribly difficult, and what was worth all the while.

    • @viciouscircle7802

So the point is he tricked her with the 'possible' untruths opposite to the ones she was seeking to possibly implant in his viewpoint (which is flawed eitherway and based on ego). Its not that he necessarily thinks what he is saying to her is right. Its a game or feels futile even to him so having her come round to 'his thinking' feels empty and beside the point of the subject of not telling eachother what to think.
He does it in an ungodly way; conscious of his actions whilst somehow still recognising the human aspect in the absurdity of the subjects bredth and scope (god religion christianity, religious values and views) and also in his own actions in the moment.
With a human heart the character that observed the other 'influencing' thoughts in someone else about something they both know nothing about does it to the other one. The tears arent agreement. The tears and the smile make it as circular as the subject itself. It almost becomes a past time to be dancing together with the subject and begins to lose its meaning. Passing the cat around with mutual affections on tje subject (?) as time soldiers on regardless of their dance. Cats no longer a kitten maybe.
...and as he says she was WAITING FOR HIM TO SPEAK (never noticed this) to tell her what to think!!!! When he did what she ast and participated in the mechanical absurdity of the conversation and giving her what to think, he smiles because they just both had a conversation about just that where she tried to convince him of her mirror...or window (to the world). "Then she threw the curtains down (curtains of knowledge. Enlightenment) and said "when will you ever learn". Trying to end the argument by taking away his view of the world or his point. He pushes her back, he wins but the prize is empty and meaningless to him abit like the conversation. They are the absurdity they see.
He selects words so carefully and so precisely theres always more too see. Also sarcastic "and with our eyes open wide...we pressed our faces to the glass".
They arent agreeing as some have interpreted. He's saying "look at us thinking we are wise trying to feed eachother what to think" while he tells her or asks her more importantly about the concerns he has about telling people what to think or having a place or meaning to do so. The expressions in the end are tears, smiles, and sadness. But its unclear about what. Smiling at the absurdity of the fact hes saying what he believes but doesnt know if he believes it? Or if its even true, hes questioning everything. Is the character smiling at his 'counter influencing'? Because of the crying? Crying because she agrees....or crying because she doesnt agree and it hasnt been of comfort or 'use'. Possible frustration from her, (they couldnt wipe the smile off their face or keep it in whilst they sadly comforted or participated in the past time).
Its interesting that in the end the meaning is abit unintelligable. As to how the character is intending their actions to the other in the end. Hes giving an ending....but it feels false... kind of like theres what to think. Like the whole thing. Hes also a musician so hes used to 'saying what he thinks' and people thinking he is 'telling'. He doesnt believe everything hes saying because hes learning but there is no end to the questions or the arguement and it all rolls round again.
Ironically i feel like the curtain is let down on the scene and we never know really what it was all about, And also ironic for me to have sat interpreting something about a circular argument that doesnt mean or not mean anything. Haha. Oh Nick X
I want to interp the video in some way but it takes so long...its really tempting..i think (hahha oh god lols) what the basic idea is...natural things 'simulated' on a screen. Hes in and out the shadows. Seeing self from more than two angles. Cat scratching in flashing images. I want to go down the rabbit hole but maybe not today....HAHAHAHAHHA feels like the whole point of the song whilst wanting to do it...HAHAHAHHAHAHA.

@@viciouscircle7802 Don't complicate things. This song is thematically similar to Cave's "murder ballads" with overtones of Eve in the garden of Eden. She has "brand new eyes open wide," and in her innocence, she sees the beauty, the wonder, and the good in the world. Her trust in him is manifest as she passes the kitten to him. And he corrupts that innocence, betrays that trust, with a focus on the ugly and unspeakable. She tries to defend her ignorance; but it's too late. He (the snake) has bidden her taste of the fruit: She now sees the world's evil and can never regain her lost innocence. And he smiles smugly at his success.

This is a philosophical discussion between two intimate people. Cave questions the womans view on the world by pointing out the flaws in human nature and the woman responds by telling him not to be so negative, and not to take it all upon himself. In my view both points are right and I think both parties are in part convinced by each other, which is why there is a reversal at the end. Cave is smiling and the woman is crying: they both see the others point of view!
    Thats my opinion anyway

The man I love for years. Everyone already knows about it ...except for him. He will never know about it. Maybe it's wrong? I do not know. I had the opportunity to tell him about it but I knew I would never do it. He finally turned his back on me as a fan.
I knew it was going to happen sooner or later - I preferred earlier :)
I have often feared for him over the years.
I love as an artist and a person.

I see a lot of various interpretations of the ending of this song, so here's my interpretation (which reflects personal experience in discussions with a family member). I believe that the woman cries because she cares about the man and she suffers seeing him despising everything and just falling back in passive nihilism, suffering from his own existence and maybe most of all she suffers from the belief that he doesn't care about her, as he seems to suggest (each is just concerned with his immediate needs). The man is smiling smugly because he feels he's won the discussion, without realising that hurting the other is not a win, that he's just a selfish asshole, that uses his philosophical view of the world as a justification for not caring about the wellbeing of those who care about him.

    • @MCVessels

It's not that he doesn't care about the people around him, though. It's that he's pointing out that our appreciation for our fellow humans' vulnerability only goes so far, and when he does that she accuses him of wanting too much of the world. As far as the singer is concerned she's shutting herself in a bubble of light and refusing to offer sympathy to people beyond it; that's why he cannot keep from smiling at the end, because her fellow-feeling is so limited and so fragile.

    • @toperic02
      @toperic02 ปีที่แล้ว

Generally, you have it but I've always interpreted it more on a macro level (not centred around their personal relationship). He has a typical man's rational and cynical view of the way the world works. She has the more positive romantic view.

Sardunyaların, mor şebboyların suyunu vermek için bahçeye
çıkıyorum, dilimde sabahtan beri dolanan bir şarkının sözleri:
"As I sat Sadly by her side. As I sat Sadly by her side... At the
    window through the glass."
