    The saddest part of The Cure's (and Robert Smith's) legacy is that nobody understanding the thematic content of his poems. He is a literary genius, unparalleled, peerless. "Killing an Arab" is so obviously a reference to Camus' The Stranger. People get that much. But his other works are explications and commentaries on classic literature, poetry, and film. It is a travesty that nobody knows what he is talking about in his beautiful / brilliant lyrics.

    • @DaveAnchovies
      @DaveAnchovies 4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      That book was a bore, though. I think the real travesty is Smith's guitar playing being overlooked. Hes not really known for his creative playing and sound. Hypnotic and totally distinctive.

    The Cure is so underrated, in my opinion. They're not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, critics gave mixed to negative reviews to Pornography, Faith, Seventeen Seconds & even Disintegration back in the 80s, and it seems like critics don't like the Cure that much. Hell, only ONE Cure album was on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums list. :(

    Сэр его знает. Я не понимаю ни чёрта по английски, но слушаю Роберта с '89 года и мне нравится. Музыка, гармонии, подача, тембр и всё прочее передают мне достаточно точно посыл исполнителя. И только не надо мне говорить, что он поёт не о том, что я понимаю. Откуда вам знать - что я понимаю? И откуда вам знать о чём он поёт на самом деле?

      The terms and labels have changed so many times over the years/decades. Back in 1980 when this was brand new we just called it 'new wave'. That term took on a whole different meaning after MTV happened, but in 1980 that's how I and everyone else I knew who was into the Cure referred to it.

    That bass tone. Almost like a clacking of the strings

      On a similar note, any bassists out there know how to get this kind of sound?? I can't seem to get that aggressive sound. I play through a solid-state guitar amp (need to get a bass amp) but I play a squire p-bass with a pick and close to the bridge

      +itwontcomeout5678 I have a very similar sound, I use a bass with an ash body and rock maple neck, Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound pickups, and a Fender Rumble 100 with the brightness switch on. It sounds about as bright as the song here played with fingers. Expensive, but worth it. If budget's a problem, go for a Fender Rumble 40 and replace the pickups with Seymour Duncan, you'll notice a hell of a difference!

      It's not that hard to get an approximation of his tone.
      Checklist: Get a P-bass (check), get a pick (check), play near the bridge (check), use somewhat fresh roundwound strings (check?) and use a decent bass amp. Brand/model doesn't really matter, as long as its big/loud enough for you. Preferably something with enough wattage (100 W or more). With a really tiny practice amp you aren't get much definition. Most important: use your EQ on the amp wisely! Gallup's tone comes from scooping the mids and boosting the lows and highs, getting that clanking/clacking sound. If you have a graphic equalizer (pedal or amp) it should look somewhat like a 'V'. Hope this helps!

      They are both using Roland Jazz Chorus amps. I think Simon is using a JC-160. They have an exceptionally bright channel and a distortion circuit that adds that "bite".
