  • The Little Mermaid is getting a live action remake adaptation from Disney that's in cinemas later this month. The first The Little Mermaid was an animation which Hollywood now thinks has to be changed and updated for Modern sensibilities. This includes various musical songs having their lyrics re-written, characters drastically changed from the original The Little Mermaid animation. Ariel, Sebastion and Flounder all look much different from the original. And as this movie is in cinemas only, is this live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid worth watching?

The Little Mermaid is back with new footage, interviews and the most bizarre of stories. The video at the end is a whole other level that even I didn't see coming 🤣But between making the movie look dull and boring, changing the songs because....well it still doesn't make sense if you understand the movie at all. And the inevitable changes to Ariel which will turn her into Rey with a tail, I'm surprised this movie is heading to cinemas.
I could have understood it being put on Disney+ like Peter Pan and Wendy, because this looks like it's going to be the same quality. Maybe it'll make a fortune as it rides the prestige of the name, but given the marketing we've had so far, it wont have helped convince anyone to go. But what do you think of what you've seen of The Little Mermaid? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

What is your opinion on Disney's Wish movie?
For an spanish inspired movie the protagonist stuck out like a sore thumb complete with braids because we know that's "exclusive" to a certain demographic and the voice actress is hand picked to have an African decent. Really see the signs here. "reimagine tomorrow".

Oh, and speaking of this song, please tell me a not the only one who absolutely hates the fact that this woman is giving these beloved songs and unnecessary R&B treatment.

Prince Eric was also the only Disney Prince who actually had a personality.
His obsession with the ocean mirrored the way Ariel was obsessed with the land. Both of them only wanted adventure and to understand a place that seems to defy their understanding.
It's also why they fell for each other, Ariel was so excitable and eager to learn about the surface world it was contagious, and it made Eric appreciate his own homeland more instead of just being bored of it.
(Not to mention he is the single most humble Prince Disney has every made. He never once dresses up from a casual t shirt, not in his home and not among a crew of his subjects. He dressed like them. Even finding a nude, mute woman he assumes was shipwrecked his first impulse is to clothe her; leaving himself even more exposed, and take her home to look after her. Even spending time with her and trying to make sure she gets settled in well. Is it any wonder she fell for him? He was the nicest man alive, any infatuation she had might have faded immediately if he'd been a smug git. But he was utterly sincere and charming. He even risked his own life to save her and her kingdom from Ursla, which keep on mind; not his kingdom to risk his life for, and a woman he knew all of a few days, but no hesitation he rushes in to do the right thing and single handedly tries to pilot the ship out to protect both their worlds and in doing so brings harmony and united both kingdoms)
I will not stand Eric slander

"we definitely changed the perspective of just her wanting to leave the ocean for a boy" That must be a joke. One of the first scenes of the animated film is Ariel searching for human objects in an old shipwreck because humans fascinate her. She even sings about wanting to be human before she meets Eric.... and the "Kiss the Girl" scene was good the way it was. Eric was the perfect gentleman. If someone pushed the other, it's more likely Sebastian pushing Eric with the song😅. I'm beginning to feel like these guys all saw a different version of Ariel than I did. She scarcely cared about what her absence would do to her family/friends or the fact she knew nothing about Eric other than he was a handsome human prince - all she cared about was herself (i.e. - a spoiled teenage girl putting her own wants/desires ahead of everyone/everything else and not considering any of the consequences that came with her actions because she was also incredibly arrogant to think she could accomplish an impossible goal and never considering the evil sea witch may try to double cross her).

Basically, Ariel has no significant character flaws in the live action film, then? She stays under the sea until she saves Eric. She gets Scuttle to bring her human things, rather than going up herself. She can do everything and anything by herself?
Yes, in the original film, King Triton was in the wrong to be so overprotective of his youngest daughter without trying to understand her perspective a little more, or giving her more information. He was in the wrong to feel prejudiced towards *all* humans. He was *especially* in the wrong to destroy Ariel’s collection of human knick knacks to punish her in a moment of reckless rage when he found out about how she saved Eric, and he couldn’t bring himself to keep attempting to be patient with her rebellion.
However, even before she saw Eric, Ariel had a very active interest in looking for human artifacts and going up to the surface to see learn about them from Scuttle, even though she knew her father forbid it. Yes, Triton was overprotective, but Ariel certainly had her flaws, too. He could no longer take it when Ariel actually rescued a human and went up on dry land because that was the most dangerous thing Ariel could have done from his perspective. No longer was this just a phase that he told himself she’d eventually get over, but she was risking her life.
In some ways, you can make a valid point that Ariel was rebelling because she had a avoidant and illogically strict parent who fucked up by never explaining to her why he despised humans occasionally displayed emotionally abusive traits in his aggressive overprotectiveness, regardless of pure intentions. I’d agree in that assessment of King Triton’s parenting flaws. I also agree that grotto destruction is finally what pushed Ariel away to make that deal with Ursula to become human in anger, desperation, and uncertainty.
Triton definitely should have been a better dad, though, to his credit, he did finally learn his lesson and make up for it by sacrificing himself to save Ariel from Ursula and letting her be human with Eric. However, I do also think the writers of the 1989 script made it a point to show us that Ariel’s interest in exploring the human world above was turning into an unhealthily all-consuming obsession, too. It’s why she couldn’t get Eric to kiss her under Ursula’s terms as a human for three days. It’s why she got her voice back, her family and Eric found out the truth, and she figured out how to healthily balance at the end where she could live out her dreams freely and be close to her family and friends at the sea.
For instance, aside from the human world, Ariel is a character who is established to love dancing, music, and singing a lot. She even is shown as the one who pushes her father to lift his ban on music in Atlantica with Sebastian after her mother’s untimely death. Sure, that Ariel’s Beginnings movie was made almost twenty years after the release of the 1989 animated film, but, even in the 1989 film, Ariel was shown to love dancing, music, and singing, so I actually don’t buy that this was something Triton and Sebastian pressured her to attend rehearsals and sing along to perform in a musical concert that featured her and her sisters.
I think Ariel likely volunteered to be in the concert for a while, and then at some point found a new personal interest in exploring the world above. She latched on to that as new hobby to obsess over instead,,and it started to become more important to her than anything for a while.
In her introductory scene, she’s bossing around, mocking, and scaring her poor little friend Flounder about sharks to get him to swim far away from the palace with her and explore a sunken ship for human things, even though he tries to tell her no repeatedly. Triton wasn’t the best parent, but I don’t think Ariel was this entirely innocent victim who did nothing wrong either. She was acting like a an addict, or a teen with ADHD. Not intentionally cruel or self-centered, but so desperate to have her fix of the human world above that it became all-consuming in ways that were becoming increasingly problematic. She became willing to ignore the potential consequences and steamroll over the feelings and opinions of others closest to her in relationships to have her fix of the human world above. She became willing to neglect her other personal hobbies and interests, such as music, in favor of getting her fix of exploring the human world above. She became willing to sacrifice her voice and keep almost everyone else in the dark to get her fix of the human world above. Flounder and Sebastian only were able to find out about what Ariel was doing when she made that deal to become human with Ursula because they chose to follow along to try to offer their advice and support when she told them what she was going to do. At that point, without her fins, Ariel wasn’t a strong swimmer on her new human legs in the 1989 animated film, and Ursula was just sitting there cackling when Ariel realized she needed to find air to be able to breathe now that she was no longer half-fish. Ariel likely would have died by suffocation from drowning underwater then and there, if Flounder and Sebastian hadn’t been there to help her swim to surface afterwards.
Moreover, Triton also wasn’t completely wrong about Ariel going to the surface without any consideration for the consequences being potentially dangerous either. Ariel was a rebellious teenage girl with an impulsive and selfish streak. That doesn’t mean she was ever actively and deliberately cruel or malicious. Sebastian made a pretty good point about Ariel’s attitude and disobedience in the 1989 film when he pointed out to Triton “Teenagers…They think they know everything…You give them an inch, they swim all over you” after he let her off easy for inconsiderately forgetting about her role performing in Sebastian’s concert with her sisters for her father because she got too distracted doing her own thing exploring a sunken ship and going up to the surface for answers.
Ariel was a rather bratty, impulsive, sassy, and self-righteous teenager. She wanted to do her own thing, regardless of what anyone else told her or warned her. Some people might find that irritating, but I think it’s a pretty typical attitude from many *real* 16 year old girls. It was really neat how the writers of a Disney animated film featuring a female protagonist weren’t too afraid to actually write one who was still essentially a good person, but with personality flaws.
Ariel cracked under Ursula’s pressure, and allowed herself to achieve her dreams of being human and being with Eric, even though she knew it made her feel uncomfortable dealing with Ursula, giving up her voice, and leaving behind her family without telling them. That’s why she doesn’t get to be romantically involved with Eric until she got her voice back, and could be honest with him about who she was.
She finally got her comeuppance at the end and learned her lesson when Ursula’s unexpected interference in her deal to become human almost cost her, not only her own life, but the lives of Eric, her family, and her friends.
It didn’t mean Ariel was an unlikable female protagonist in the 1989 animated film either, even though she had these flaws. Flaws do not automatically make a character unlikable, but they do make them feel more human when they’re shown alongside good traits, too. Ariel loved her family and friends, and she was ultimately loyal to them. She had a kind and well-meaning heart. She was still very adventurous, brave, determined, passionate in her defense of her values and what she loved, and protective of those she loved.
Ursula was evil, and written to be an unlikable person, even though she was an entertaining villain. Ariel was *not* written to be a villain, and never do I get the sense that she should have been in the 1989 Disney animated classic, in spite of her character flaws.
However, Ariel still was written much like a *relatably* headstrong, distractible, impulsive, naive, lovestruck, rebellious, sassy, and selfish teenage girl in the 1989 animated film. The fact that she was *not* written to be a perfectly demure, sweet, and selfless cinnamon roll with no frustrating personality flaws, unlike Aurora, Cinderella, and Snow White, who came before her, was actually a really revolutionary writing move for Disney storytelling of major female protagonists at the time. Ariel’s characterization in the 1989 animated film was the start of major female Disney protagonists actually getting written to be *characters* with relatable personality flaws in addition to strengths, rather than just being written as too innocent and sweet for their own good *role-models.*
In this version, it sounds like they’ve made Ariel way too perfect. Now, she’s no longer one of the more *real* Disney Princesses with an interesting and relatable individual personality in this live action movie as a result. That was what made Ariel so great in the 1989 animated Disney film. Ariel being such a typical teenage girl with her flaws and motivations in the 1989 Disney film was such a refreshing change from the impossibly pure goody goody Disney female protagonists in the franchise. That’s why we talk so much more about her and many of the other Disney Princesses that come after her. They felt more like real people than just role models.
It also sounds like they’ve actually taken away Ariel’s agency in this remake. Her memory of having to kiss Eric with true love’s kiss is completely erased by Ursula, even though she wanted for Eric to kiss her in the animated film. God forbid a woman ever actually try to romantically/sexually pursue a man they are attracted to, right? Modern “woke” Disney really needs to fucking die!

In the original story the mermaids could go up when they were of age, Ariel knew about the "other world" from her sisters and she was so curious about humans and new things.
She represented the rebellious but innocent teens that go against their parents and get into serious trouble.

I also think it was a bad idea to make Ariel the one to kill Ursula at the end. In the 1989 film, that was Eric’s big moment for a reason. Up until that point, King Triton despised all human beings, and nothing Ariel did or said to him about them in their defense was going to convince him otherwise. However, when he actually saw a human being bravely and selflessly risk his life and kill the sea witch to save his daughter and the rest of the Atlantica, he realized that they weren’t all terrible. He could trust that his daughter would be safe on land with the right human by her side, and he realized that Eric was that person.

Taking away Pinocchio’s agency so instead of him choosing to skip school and go be bad, he is kicked out of school and has no choice but to get swept away with the wrong crowd. Wendy was not maternal, motherly nor compassionate in the new Pan and completely took away the arc to showing the others that growing up isn’t a bad thing. Honestly the addition of Ursula making Ariel forget feel... Kind of stupid.
And makes both the songs "poor unfortunate souls" and Kiss the girl" irrelevant.
The first song was Ursula low key threatening Ariel with an impossible quest. Hiding it as a hard, but plausible challenge.
This was supposed to give Ariel agency.
And Kiss the girl WAS that agency. If you think about it. That song was out of desperation. Eric was in love with someone else. And Ariel was too distracted at being a human to make a move.
If Ursula was just planing to hide the fact Ariel needs to kiss someone within three days. The song should have been at least cut in half.
And if Ariel and Eric aren't in love with each other, prior to them meeting.
Then they should have scrapped kiss the girl ALL TOGETHER.

I was born in '84, the original film came out in '89 and I grew up on the film and TV show. I feel I know Ariel and co pretty well. Ariel isn't a passive actor, she's straight forward, loves exploring and adventures, and speaks up where there is injustice - such as with the 'In Harmony' song which is hella cute. Eric was also a great match for her; he's seventeen, yet mature beyond his years, loves his kingdom and his dog (always a good sign) and very accepting of her heritage.

(I'm a woman) The most frustrating thing about these remakes is their fundamental misunderstanding of the original characters. Although I agree The Little Mermaid can be interpreted as outdated, it can also be seen in a different light.
Ariel is young. Her fascination with the prince starts out as crush that's inflated by her love of the human world. Ariels love and passion for the human world is her own thing! What pushes her over the edge is her FATHER! Just like in the real world, if parents are overprotective and over barring, it usually encourages the children to be *more* reckless in order to defy them. Ariel's crush probably *wouldn't* have evolved into anything more if her father didn't push her away and the witch didn't make it part of the contract. The movie of the Little Mermaid is about rebellion, independence, discovery, and learning to let go and let your children grow into who they want to be. Ariel wanted to be human and learn more about the human world. The prince was the closest she's ever come to a human. It's obvious she hyper fixated on the statue. Her father destroying everything she treasured and was passionate about is what drove her to the sea witch. If memory serves, Ariel wasn't even the one to bring up the prince to Ursula. Ursula over heard her crush on the prince and initially brought it up in the conversation. Ariel just wanted to be human and was willing to do anything to achieve that. Especially since she didn't feel any love or support from home. The prince was a BONUS, not the main goal.
Edit: also im glad I wasn't the only person to feel like flounder is dead behind the eyes. I was also deeply uncomfortable when she held his small, frail fins. I really was expecting her to rip them off. The darkness of all these recent Disney movies keeps giving me horror movie vibes, and I feel like something bad is going to happen.

      @Nightingale1998 ปีที่แล้ว +18

@englishatheart you can interpret it that way, yes. The older disney movies especially played more into fairytale fantasies. However, with this more recent movie trying to "fix" things, it's important to make distinctions on whether something actually *needs* to be fixed, or if they are making mountains out of molehills. If you go back and watch old interviews about The Little Mermaid, Ariel was always meant to be an independent go-getter who followed her own destiny. Something this remake seems to want to ignore. Disney 100% used to play into fated love stories in the past. However, I don't think that's the only thing to take away from the movie. That's what makes a lot of the old movies great. You *can* take them at face value, but if you dig deeper, a lot of them feel very layered as well.

(Guys can pull away too from an advance if they're unsure! Consent goes both ways.) That's just weird that she'd pull away when she HAS to get him to kiss her if she want's to stay on land and not be the sea witch's slave for eternity. (The original makes a lot more sense in this context.) Or did Disney change that too?

Imagine if Disney did what the original tale says happened. The Little Mermaid had her tongue cut out. When given the legs, it was like walking on swords (or glass). After three days of pain and failing to win the love of the Prince (who fell in love with another Princess[ LM lost in a DANCE OFF!!!], who he thought saved him from drowning), her sisters gave her a magic dagger (from the same sea witch that helped the LM before) and told her that she needed to kill the Prince in order to live.

But said girl tries to be close to him because she needs to kiss him to not turn back to being a mermaid and being Ursula’s captive and not because she loves him. The original animated version WASN'T about Ariel "going to the surface after a boy". In fact, if you re-watch the original animated version, you'd see that Ariel was already driven by the things she wanted (i.e. to explore the human world, to see people dancing, to learn about fire and why it burns, etc), and she already wanted the freedom to do that. The part about Prince Eric was only because Ursula had the kiss as part of the contract, and Prince Eric was the only male human that Ariel had a close encounter with at that point. In the end, Ariel still got what she wanted...plus extra (i.e. love). How can the live-action remake "change the story to this" if the story already was this? I see your point but I don't entirely agree. The original animated classic started with her interest in the human world, but it did become all about the boy after she glimpsed Eric. Her becoming human by Ursula's hand was tied to her becoming Eric's and in the end, her father turning her human was also just because he realized that she truly loved him and they would marry.
If she hadn't would he have turned her human? He didn't before when she was just wildly interested in the human world. It took a human man that she loved to convinve him. So I kind of see the argument that the original movie wasn't focused on her wishes and freedom as an individual, but solely on her wishing to be someone's wife.

Could you imagine how disappointed Walt Disney would be in the current state of Disney? I just watched a documentary about his history and that dude was so gifted at collaboration, creating amazing creation's, finding the right people for the right things. They were TRULY DIVERSE, genuinely talented like we rarely see. Dedicated and Passionate towards creating imagination bending works of art and they Really did understand all the aspects and processes that mattered. For what it took to create those works of art. *(I just saw that Ukraine just started creating 2d animation for their military videos and it really reminded me of what I saw Walt do during WW2)
I love seeing cartoon styled animated video's being used again. Just how Walt Disney did (out of his own pocket) he believed it was the least he could do for his country and his countrymen who were giving so much to the war to protect our nation and the greater good in the world. (If you think about it. Walt Disney did a lot for pushing advancements in science/creativity. He made understandable information that taught so many people of all ages, and from all sorts of different walks of life, to inform on very important matters and subjects of the time. Things that might seem out of place or difficult now, were completely relative to the current situations everyone was dealing with at that point in time. (The passion Walt gained for science and technology is what sparked his passion for Epcot and learning how to build all these cutting edge devices, city planning concepts, animatronics puppets of Abe Lincoln or the talking/signing birds in the tiki lounge. Plus all the other puppets on all the other interactions around his theme park. I just watched a documentary covering the career of Walt Disney and he really was a amazingly uniquely talented person. Where he himself had a insane drive towards innovation and new ideas BUT what I think his best trait was: That Walt was SO GOOD at interacting with everyone around him and he just had this amazing ability to find the PERFECT person for different jobs, things, roles. To really bring out the best in OTHER people around him. I truly believe that's one of the most important traits in a great leader. If anyone is in a group of people who are set on creating anything. (It's rare when someone comes across with the unique style and approach like Walt Disney had and really all it takes is to watch the coverage documentary that covers all of this uniquely awesome stuff that positively impacted SO MANY PEOPLE in so many ways and places. It didn't matter who you were, the chance that something from the Walt Disney era impacting you in a positive way is nearly 100% a possibility. There really was some of the best attributes of humanity, teamwork, and motivated passionate creativity that occured thru this group of Walt Disney era team members and we all could learn something from them. In some way or another.)

She was curious about the surface but, her driving force that lead her to make a deal with an evil witch, was indeed a guy. There's usually a witch or evil magical person who goes after the girl and a Prince has to save her. Even though it's not real life, it's nice that there's traditional roles in these stories. The woke ideology doesn't like that so I don't understand why they can't come up with their own stories and leave these alone.

I want to know when Disney is going to realise they can make their remakes closer to the source material. In the original there were consequences for the silly girls poor choices, and it supported the wisdom of the older people around her, as well as showing her personal strength of character. She was not restricted to 3 days, but spent years next to the prince, who saw her as a little sister or friend, rather than a love interest. Consequences. This one I have always hated. Let's abandon your family, burn bridges, take magic spells from nefarious people, all for a boy you've never spoken to, and then get everything you wanted in the end because Disney doesn't believe in consequences for really poor choices, asking for help from your family, reasonable and intelligent parents/rulers or even the idea that a protagonist could fail in achieving her life's goals.

So, let's see: in the original animated movie, during Kiss the Girl? Eric pulls away first, despite Ariel leaning in and puckering up, because Eric is still holding out hope for his dream girl to arrive. He ALREADY was treating her like an equal! He didn't force himself on her!
Let's flip the genders in the animated story: Ariel is male, a merman, and Eric is a princess. Ariel collects things that drift down from above the water, including a life size statue of Princess Eric that was meant for her seventeenth birthday. A warlock comes along and gives Ariel a deal that will allow him to go topside, assuming he survives the bends from raising to the surface that quickly, and he has to get Eric to kiss him. Besides being the weirdest isekai ever since it doesn't even hop worlds... Ariel's just an otaku who gets a shot at the object of her affection.

These mermaids don't look related at all.
I find it insulting that they did this. Insulting to that pure love that Triton Had for his wife that broke his heart so completely that he banned music and dancing from his kingdom for years after she died.
That kind of love and devotion, Is eternal. If treyton had side tail that birth his other daughters, And he would have replaced his wife, He would have had other mermaids To be with after her death.
But he didn't he chose to be alone because she was his one and only. Look at him being A loving grandpa. This is a devoted family man. It makes no sense for him to have side tail.

To be fair, considering how difficult and dangerous childbirth was at that time (most doctors and midwives didn't wash their hands with soap, at all, let alone before sticking them "up there" to help with a breech, and there was no antibiotics to help if there was any form of infection from any type of wound, and London at that time was NOT a clean place)
Considering all that, I can believe that living and dying alone was actually a tempting choice for a young woman at that time in history...
      IF!!! IF!!!!!...
IF Her family was wealthy enough and IF upon inheriting their families estate, the eldest of her brothers took pity on her and afforded her land and an allowance, because she wasn't going to be able to get a job (as a woman of that time) that could support her independently for a lifetime.
Essentially, George would be her benefactor, and I hope Wendy is grateful to her brother, when the norm of the time was to marry for survival and start a family by default.
Some women wanted families, some didn't, most did it anyway for survival purposes.
That being said, the idea of dying alone should be far LESS popular now, because without the risk of death during childbirth, or at the hands of a violent alcoholic husband that you were NOT allowed to run from because Society (both of which are thoroughly resolved in this day and age (you dont get to expect absolutely zero men to be evil towards women, we get to have the option to try anything to escape those very rare men WITH the support of society.....and any other expectations on mankind are just unrealistic nonsense))
Without the risk of death in childbirth (birth control exists, natal medical care is now top notch) or the risk of dying/suffering at the hands of a violent husband (divorce and womens shelters exist).....
....well, then, the only reason to NOT want to eagerly persue and find a deep, meaningful relationship with another consenting adult, is because you are either too immature yet, or just generally self-serving and self-centred.
So it simply highlights the immaturity of THAT vision ESPECIALLY when held NOW, in modern times. SUPER backwards NOW, when risk is off the table.

The cartoon was already all about what Ariel wants. She wanted to get legs so she could experience the human world and get that hot hunk of Prince. And Ursula wanted her revenge against Triton. It's already a story that's entirely about women that want something.

I agree I figured I'm biased because I'm a pale red head with blue eyes. I loved Ariel's original character.
I am very disappointed by how they changed her. And has not just how she looks her personality is different. And I know the argument is supposedly her singing is so great but I honestly don't see it that way. I listened to her song and yes she's a good singer, But she's not good enough to make up for not being anything like the character at all.
And her song has a completely different energy to it. Ariel is light playful whimsical she has this fiery energy and burst of life.
Halley Ariel Is lower, Is somber, singing feels heavier. Interfacial expressions everything is more serious.
They should have just gave her own character. Because she is no Ariel. I was willing to get past the appearances but the acting, singing , Facial expressions Body language, None of it gives off the same energy or essence of the original Disney little mermaid.
I would say that this is up there with how good Disney did with the Ella echanted movie based on the book😂 If you know what I'm talking about, then you'll understand and know this is sarcasm.
At least Ella enchanted was an OK movie separate from the book. I don't think this live action little mermaid movie even has that.

Why wouldn't Eric have Ariel's "consent"? She literally NEEDS him to kiss her, or else she becomes Ursula's property! Speaking of Ursula, she's the f**king villain, so WHY change the lyrics to her song too? We already know that they've changed the climax to where Ariel somehow steers the wrecked ship into the giant Ursula, thus "saving Eric"...again...

    • @Jsa460
      @Jsa460 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I heard they changed Ursula's song. She's a villain but she's also blunt and when it comes down to it, gives it straight to Ariel what the deal is without lying. The song where I believe they've made changes was literally about how she thought it was stupid that people didn't respect themselves enough and were unable to see what was on the inside instead of just focusing on shallow beauty standards to feel worthwhile. (So now Disney is saying people should judge purely on appearances? Good to know!) Like she's super snide about the fact that a guy thought he couldn't get the girl he wanted without using magic to make him ripped, and the girl wanted a handsome guy but thought one wouldn't look at her without being thin. She changes them and poof! They get together even though they're still the same people underneath and then pay a terrible price and don't get their happily ever after which they would have otherwise been able to have if they hadn't been so shallow. Anyone thinking she was making fun of their appearance totally and completely missed the point. She was making a commentary on how people felt they needed to meet society standards of beauty to be accepted, even if it kills them. I mean Ursula can look like anything, she has the magic to do so, and yet she doesn't care what other's think. At one point she becomes outwardly beautiful, but she's still evil underneath reinforcing that beauty is skin deep trope. Changing her character is a crappy move. She's probably my favorite Disney villain because of how irreverent and confident she is, and of course that killer song she gets.

    • @L337M4573RK
      @L337M4573RK ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@Jsa460 No argument here! Ursula is a villain through and through and manipulating others is her specialty, but that doesn't mean she can't be truthful about it. I agree that she makes very reasonable points about the faults of society and trying to meet unreasonable expectations. As a master of manipulation, she also knows how to use those reasonable points to better convince her "victims" into doing what she wants. Of course, she does cherry-pick some of her points, and intentionally leaves out some important context like what the specific obligations were of her previous contracts (which would better explain why those previous merpeople failed to fulfill their side of said contracts), but that's just part of why she's the villain!
It's unlikely that current Disney took all that (including what you stated) into consideration when they decided to alter Ursula's song and character motivation for the upcoming remake.

    • @unimpartialobserver
      @unimpartialobserver ปีที่แล้ว

@@Jsa460 Ursula's song had to be changed, because (1) she offers "instant fixes" that don't really work, (2) takes away your liberty in exchange for them, and (3) pretends that it's about anything but her own ego. In short, she sounds too much like the people the writers voted for, and it made them uncomfortable.
