Jerry did actually write this song for Layne. Their long time manager's daughter asked "uncle Jerry what does black fade to blue mean?" Jerry replied when things are dark, and everything is black, doesn't mean it last forever, eventually it fades, and blue is used as a metaphor for peace and acceptance.
Alice in chains were a very very important band to me when i was growing up. and with someone like Layne, I was there at the time hearing about his drug problems etc just wishing I could do something to help. Was very sad when he died. I wil always continue listening to him.

My friend was murdered Dec. 25th 3am, 1999. We partied plenty to some of the greatest bands. Alice in Chains, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper. And so many more. Like Roxette. It's amazing how the best seem to pass away.
