PD's don't defend anyone, they just interface with the judge and prosecutor to keep the person being REAMED by the county or state calm, and make sure that they don't end up doing life in prison for some random minor misdemeanor. Other than that, they are completely useless. The crap you see on TV dramas with stressed out hard-working PD's fighting for people is pure fantasy. Those fantasy's are based off of Civil Rights attorneys not actual PD's. And the only reason they could claim to be stressed out or overworked is because they generally are overworked dealing with hundreds of cases at one time which circles back to them being useless because they have zero time for one person and don't care either because they all hang out and drink/party with the prosecutors and DA"s and judges after work. That can also be proven if you need a lawyer & have to rely on a public defender because you can't afford a lawyer. In my experience they'll just offer you plea deals, like a prosecutor, instead of even trying to represent you properly.
I had one once & I could have been easily proven innocent if they'd just get sales records from a local store, but they flat out refused to do that - even said they can't do that - when I know that's BS...because I've seen them use sales records from a store to convict someone because sales records proved they were in the area & bought a certain item.
In my case, I was accused of buying cigarettes for a minor. But I didn't. I had never even heard of the brand of cigarettes they accused me of buying! So I said if you get the sales records from the 15 minute time frame they said it happened, it would prove I didn't buy those, & most likely no one at all bought that brand of cigarettes durian that time frame. But, nope...they wouldn't do it.
But I've seen them use sales records to convict someone else of vandalism because they bought spray paint at a local hardware store that they used to vandalize a building with.
If all that makes sense, lol

The police and dispatcher know the law better than the attorneys and staff. The regional public defender director should be made aware of what happened here. Let this office know that what they did was illegal and the public should have been allowed access. The locked door is more for security reasons and not due to covid. Based on this interaction, they probably have a lot of disgruntled clients due to ineffective assistance of counsel claims, and that is why they have the locked door. They need to replace these staffers with people who understand the most basic constitutional rights. The supervisor should be reported to state bar counsel.

Public defenders do NOT work for the general public... they work for a small subset of the general public. Because of that, they are only legally required to serve indigent people charged with a crime that carries a punishment of imprisonment (poor people who recieve traffic citations that have no possibility of jail time, are not entitled to Public defenders)...
The general public is NOT entitled to services in the same way they are entitled to services from the water department or the health department. Yes, It's a public building but they are NOT required to have a publicly accessible office because they don't serve the general public. They have a right to make the whole office a restricted area, and restrict access to only the small subset of the public they are required to serve.... he's not entitled to any public information (pamphlets) unless he's qualified to receive services from the public defenders office.
Audit the Audit and Lack Luster both made videos that provided a great explanation of this issue. NH Now is actually incorrect... this building is RESTRICTED to only the people entitled to receive services (poor people charged with a crime).
public defenders offices are a rare exception to the rule, because even though they receive tax dollars they do NOT serve the general public, go watch audit the audits video.

They don't support anybody. They just make it easier for the Prosecutor to shuffle people off to jail or fine them. I've worked in courthouse's, they all hang out and drink and party together and collude on cases. They're all paid by the same place, they all work together to make their lives easier for themselves and don't give two shits about anything other than whining about their caseload because municipalities give very little funding to their office because nobody really wants to support the people that need to be defended so why spend money on the department. Which just leads to them skating through their job duties agreeing to whatever the prosecutor or DA wants to do. Never agree to work with one, mortage your house to hire a real attorney if it's serious enough. Otherwise cross your fingers, lube your butthole, and don't do whatever it is you did to get in trouble.

Time is when the functioning department is operating during "business" hours. Place is covered by when the public is legally allowed to be there. This would fall under the category of a public lobby. Even if I was under a criminal charge, I'd be able to access the building to gather the information required to determine if I needed a PD or not. I wouldn't HAVE to be a current client to do so. Manner would be the legal activities afforded by the Constitution's 1st Amendment of Freedom Of The Press, and can NOT be abridged.
