    Lincoln's MKZ has long lived in the shadow of its Ford brother, the Fusion despite following the same formula that made the Lexus ES a success: take a mid-size volume car, add some bling, real wood, more standard options and a longer warranty. The trouble with the last generation according to the automotive press is that the MKZ looked too much like the Fusion. For 2013 Lincoln solved that by giving the MKZ all new sheetmetal that is more distinctive while at the same time doubling down on the value proposition by inserting more standard equipment than any other entry in this segment.
    The 2014 and 2015 models of the MKZ come in three different flavors. Things start out with as 2.0L turbo engine in the 2.0T, the same 3.7L V6 as the bigger MKS makes a cameo in the MKZ 3.7 and Ford's excellent 2.0L atkinson cycle hybrid system powers the MKZ 2.0H. The 2.0H trim is the model that Lincoln let me for this review.
    While I'm still not totally sure about the exterior style, the inside of the MKZ is highly competitive. With parts quality and build precision easily up to the level of the Acura TLX, the Lincoln handily beats the Lexus ES when it comes to inviting cabins. This last generation of ES 300h and ES 350 contain large amounts of hard plastic and surprisingly sparse use of leather, wood and metal trim. The opposite describes the MKZ with a well trimmed interior that has no harsh touch-points within reach of the driver.
    What separates the Lincoln from the rest of the pack is not the 3.7L V6 in my mind. It is the hybrid. Even though the MKZ is down on power compared to the Avalon hybrid and the ES 300h, the Lincoln is thousands less expensive and by far the better handling vehicle. Not often said of hybrids, but the handling and general road dynamics are quite simply the best feature about the MKZ. Thanks to wide standard tires, a standard adaptive suspension and a serious dedication to suspension tuning, the MKZ hybrid is only a demi-step behind the Mercedes CLA250 out on the road despite being two sizes larger. The combination of excellent value, sharp handling, a smooth ride and fuel economy that is class leading makes me wonder how it is possible the Lexus ES outsells the MKZ 2:1. If you're shopping for an ES, especially the hybrid, take my advice: drive right past the Lexus dealer and get the MKZ. Then go on a European vacation with the $7,400 you'll save.

    I just purchased a near new 2016 Hybrid MKZ Reserve with all the bells and whistles including Multicontour Seats. It is an amazing car! Everything Alex says is spot on. In fact his review sold me on it, I was looking at the ES 300H as well. There is no comparison in my opinion for the value, options, technology, etc etc. BTW GET the Multicontour seats!!! It is worth the trouble to find one with it. Everyone loves those seats!!! Getting messaged while driving down the road in a luxurious quiet isolated environment is just crazy, but guess what? You're worth it.
    Getting 37+ mpg with climate controls on for comfort, heated seats and steering wheel going, etc and actually enjoying your comfortable luxury hybrid is just awesome!!! My brother is a ford mechanic for 30 years and he's NEVER had a ford hybrid in for service.. that was the final sell... you can't beat the value. Unfortunately now my wife wants to sell her Volt in two years to have my car.. so I suspect at that time I'll be searching for another used 2017 Mkz Hybrid.. but with those Multicontour seats!!
    I finally decided to step out of my 2002 Honda Insight, a MPG king.. but at 47 years old I wanted and love trading some MPG for luxury after a hard day at work.. and those seats deliver, along with everything else. I owned a lot of vehicles (including a Corvette Z06) and hi-performance motorcycles.. maybe I am getting older, but this car rocks!!
    PS: if you're worried if the hybrid has enough power for the interstate/city driving etc.. no problem for any sane person, passing is a piece of cake, remember I've owned and really ENJOYED driving my 2004 Z06... the hybrid has plenty of power, it is a non issue.

      I just Got A 2016 hybrid yesterday fully loaded certified and Alex I was not sure at first but after seeing all the features and benefits of the car and the great deal and warranty I bought it and love!! I am taking it in Tuesday to get some things taken care but car looks new!! Also I just gave my Dodge Charger RT MAX HEMI for this for something luxury instead of insane speed lol! But happy to say the Hybrid still go's pretty good and its not slow. I am also your age 48 turning 49 in about 6 weeks, so maybe I am getting a little older.

    Hi Alex! I know this is almost 8 years later, but I just wanted to give a quick thumbs up for this vehicle. We have the "14 MKZ V6... STILL. Well, its been about 6 years now, and we've never had a car this long. and my Wife has never been happier with a car either. She won't let it go! Our now 10 year old grandson has been wondering if he can have when he gets his drivers license. The upstate NY winters, and its devastating effect on cars discussion to come later. :(
    We haven't had any major issues at over 90k miles now, and it is still a comfortable, and pretty peppy ride. (I think we have every conceivable option.... which means we can't see getting another vehicle without ACC, heated seats, and maybe even the massage seats etc...)
    Its well taken care of, so it still looks really nice, but it helps that it has an exceptional paint job from the factory. The Ruby Red just stands out, she's always getting compliments on it, even now.
    Thanks for all of your reviews, you're the best at this, and we all learn quite a bit here to help in our search for vehicles! This one, for us, is a winner!

    Hi Alex. Let me congratulate you on this review. This is the most complete review I have seen about this car. Well guess what, I am convinced and everything you said on this video and more is all true, because I went this past Saturday September 20, 2014 and got myself a brand new 2015 hybrid. This is an amazing car, It's gorgeous by the inside and the outside, it's comfortable, luxurious and very futuristic. I am still learning all the gadgets it brings, the sound is super, the handling is great, the sync system from Microsoft is superb, at night by the inside is like traveling in a Limo, you can set the ambient lights with different tones of lights, which makes a night out very pleasant and romantic, the air conditioning on the leather seats is out of the world, how about the massage all over my back and buttocks; The fuel saving is the most important My wife have traveled about 200 some miles since Saturday and only close to a half talk is been burned. I also believe that Uncle Sam here in America will reward me back in Taxes $2,500 or some like that at the beginning of next year for buying this baby, I hope we can enjoy this vehicle for a good time ahead. Thanks

      I have to give you guys an update on my new 2015 MKZ since I purchased it a month ago. I visited my son in North Carolina and why not drive my new car all the way from Miami to North Carolina and back. It is almost 12 hours flight, yes you read right a "Flight", why?, because this car rides like an airplane, you don't hear the tires on the road, you simple hear the air flow, like when flying inside an airplane, it's like the same noise, however, there only 3 things I didn't like about the car, and those are 1. The seats, looks very attractive, and make you believe that the seats are comfortable at the time of purchase, for a long trip like the one I had, I found the seats very hard on the bottom, not the back area, I even fire up the message and the equipped cool air flow on my seat, at the time I got to my destination, I had my rear end on fire. 2. The steering wheel, since I was driving on a long trip, I needed to have my arm on a comfortable position in order to rest. the wheel has a small opening on the bottom of the wheel which doesn't allow you to fit your hand in it, forcing me to grab the wheel from a different angle, from the sides, making my long trip uncomfortable and very tiring for my arms. 3. The cruise control, this cruise control although is supposed to be a smart cruise control with the equipped ECO system which will help you switch to electric vehicle at times, well I find out that, I spent more fuel with the cruise control on, than with the cruise control off; This cruise control only disengage when the car is on a very incline down heel, and from Miami to North Carolina there are not to many of those, having the cruise control engaged pulling fuel into the engine at all times. On the way back I spent like 3 hours or more playing with the acceleration system of the car and I was able to make the car travel almost 140 miles on electric, how?, I just lightly stepped off the foot off the pedal, and the car will automatically will go into electric mode, travelling for about a mile or so, and only dropping a few miles of speed, then accelerating little by little to regain original speed, I think that Lincoln (Ford) can create a cruise control that can close enough replicate the described foot behavior. The Mileages per Gallon rate? well, on a highway at a speed of no more than 75 miles per hours and no less than 60, minimum average I got was 35.7 miles per gallon, and the highest average I got, was never more than 36.4 miles per Gallon. On the city, this vehicle is very impressive, it clocks 39.8 miles per gallon as the highest, and the lowest 37.6 miles per gallon. Now, we have to remember that this car comes with a 13.5 gallons tank, this is nothing big compared with my old Kia Sedona 18 gallons fuel tank. With the fuel dropping in price the way is dropping, I was able to fill the tank of my new 2015 MKZ with no more than 35 dollars compared to 70 dollars I used to put in my old Kia Sedona every week, I believe is great. I went from Miami to North Carolina with one full tank, and 3/4 of another tank. So, before, from Miami to Disney World I used to spend almost the entire tank of my Sedona, which by the way, this Van was one of a great vehicle.
      On my way back I solved my uncomfortable seat nightmare, by going into Walmart and bough myself a 9 dollar dinner table cushion, same color as my car seat, with leather cover, and boy, it was the most comfortable ride ever. I hope that Lincoln can see this review and could correct the seat and the steering problems.
      This is one great car.

      +Alex on Autos SALE STATS show 3 out of 4 buyers are NOT buying the hybrid version, even though it carries the same pricetag as the normal gasoline car.  This shows buyers still don't trust hybridization in their cars (perhaps they heard it costs $2500 to replace the battery after 8 years).

    i live upstate NY....more than half the country lives in places where snow is a thing. for those of you down south that have never experienced rear wheel drive in bad weather conditions all i can tell you is a rear wheel drive car in snow is more or less garbage...i can only see it useful on a garage kept only sports car only taken out in the spring summer but other than that...rear wheel drive is worthless especially if you live in an area with loads of hills.
    front wheel drive is a lot more competent if you cant afford AWD or 4x4...

    Great review as always Alex! I actually like the styling of this car inside and out. I've been in one before and the fit/finish is on par with the competitors. Ford is really putting in effort to distinguish Lincoln models from their Ford counterparts. The only option missing is that huge panoramic roof. Thumbs up Lincoln!

    Hi Alex,
    About the front end design, You are the first reviewer of this car which mentioned the "wing" like shape of the grille. I think those who are negative about the front end design of Lincolns, are still seeing the first 2010 design when they look at it. When I look at the front of the car right across, with the badge in the middle I actually see an eagle with its wings open wide. I think the designers gave that look on purpose to render the American Eagle on the grille of the Lincoln.

    • @BAWildrose

    Really like that interior in all aspects and I agree on the Scandinavian shout-out, except the dedicated steering wheel buttons for calls is just a bit too much busy. I especially like the way most controls blank out digitally when the car is not running. Question: how dark do things dim down when you turn down cockpit brightness for night driving? For the exterior I really like the front - the grill reminds me of a winged logo and strikes me as kind of classic. However there's something I don't love about the rear, likely the flush exhausts feel they'll look dated in 5-10 years. Generally I think this car looks great inside and out, sounds super comfortable and fits in Lincoln's wheelhouse of nice, big luxury American ride. I look forward to seeing it on the street to compare - thanks as always for these detailed reviews.

    Excellent, comprehensive review. Re: EVs. My wife has a friend who recently purchased one only to discover it needed a new battery; cost? $5000. She now has to see what she can get for that car on trade in. Want to have a "shocking experience"? Try working on an EV. Another point the "Greens" won't mention: the pollution from plants manufacturing those batteries. I have loved this cars design since that look was introduced and I think it is one of the top ten best looking sedans in the world and it would be even better if Lincoln or ford offered the 5.0 v8 in that vehicle . Great great car

    Alex, you sure sold me. Very thorough and kept my attention for the whole 30 minutes + of both parts.
    However, what are your experiences with the MyLincoln Touch? It was absolutely blasted by consumer reports as distracting and difficult to use when operating the vehicle. How are simple tasks like changing the volume, input or stations on the entertainment center or adjusting the climate control? Do I have to take my eyes off the road? I think their criticism of the button transmission control to be overblown, considering I may never touch it after leaving my garage.
    I am also looking at the Lexus and Toyota Avalon hybrids as well as the hybrid Accord, though I am sort of vain and want a luxury vehicle. However, I had a Lexus 350 and it was one of the worst designed cars I have ever owned, uncomfortable seating, poor lighting, terrible electronics. Though it handled well, I dumped it at a huge loss.

      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I actually like MyLincoln Touch, but I must temper that with my agreement that it is slow, sometimes crashes and requires patience at times. It's kind of like living with Windows 95. My logic for liking it is that it has a very full feature set and the software is logically laid out. If you adapt to the limitations I would rather have that than a system that did half of what it does but did it rapidly. The media player offers full and complete voice commands you dont find on other systems, and the navigation interface is snappy when used with the voice commands, slow when you try to enter a destination with your finger. uConnect is a solid alternative in look and feel as well as modern functionality. Cadillac CUE is somewhere between, iDrive is my favourite. The Toyota systems are solid in terms of functionality but the graphics seem very basic. The Lexus systems are based on the Toyota software but in most vehicles they add the joystick or touchpad and that runs the experience for me.

    Lincoln, I think, competes more with Chrysler and Buick. If they are to bring back that old rivalry with Cadillac; they need a compact, they need RWD, annnnnd (don't throw tomatoes at me) they should make a high performer version of their cars by possibly putting a GT Shelby engine in it.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Me too! I don't understand why there aren't any luxury subcompacts. I would love to see a "Lincoln Fiesta" and an "Infiniti Versa". Add some sound insulation, a softer seat and some luxury goodies and I'm sure they would sell some.

    • @DanielBlaney
      @DanielBlaney 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Alex on Autos lincoln fiesta yes. The platform is capable. The versa I would say no. That platform is just not refined enough for this class. I think we are more likely to see a focus based lincoln first though.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel Blaney The car companies seem to resist this type of product development so both Lincoln and Infiniti deny it, but I think it would be an interesting twist. Just like I think it would be interesting to see a Lexus Prius. And I'm not talking about a Lexus CT, I'm talking abut just taking the Prius and jamming real wood and nicer leather inside with a stitched leather dash. That way the resulting product would have the luxury trappings but still get 45+ MPG. On the other hand, maybe it's a good thing we aren't in product planning :)

    Sale stats show 3 out of 4 buyers are NOT buying the hybrid version, even though it carries the same pricetag as the normal gasoline car. This shows buyers still don't trust hybridization in their cars (perhaps they heard it costs $2500 to replace the battery after 8 years)
    .

    • @XxGamersUnitedxX
      @XxGamersUnitedxX 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +electrictroy2010 You spend about twice as less in gas though, no?

    • @Trades46
      @Trades46 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Might be because the hybrid version is a direct Fusion carryover and at 188hp & 195lb/ft. Might work for the lighter less loaded Fusion but in the Lincoln the powertrain is overtaxed, the MKZ is ~3900lbs.
      The 2.0T & the V6 models carry the heft better; if you want the hybrid MKZ, go for a Fusion Titanium Hybrid.

    I don't have the $ to buy a Newer Version MKZ Hybri like a 16 ' or 17' or a new 18' but i can get 46k for my 08'( has only 64k miles) and I have $14k in savings.. thus $20k pricerange for a 14 or 15' with a max of 35k miles..

    I can't say I fancy the new signature grill. Which I believe is a mistake by lincoln. To have made and put into production. But it is one of the few things that does say lincoln.or speak Lincoln design language for both those who drive the drive the car and brand. Unlike other parts of the car which look like they where just bandaged with former design queues from former own brands by ford. As can be seen in the rear light display. That looks like it is from former owned aston Martin

    Hey Alex!
    Thank you for your reviews! They really go in-depth and it's nice to be able to get a hands on advice for those :) I'm a young professional looking for a classy hybrid since I do commute a lot, at a decent price but boosting my image.
    I am currently debating between the Lincoln MKZ hybrid and Lexus ES300h. What would be your personal opinion on it? I love the features on the MKZ, especially the fact that the back seat drops (I would get either car fully loaded) but there seems to be a legitimate concern out there about the shortcoming of the MKZ Hybrid engine...
    Any input you can provide would be greatly appreciated!!!!!
    Thanks!

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Being perfectly honest, the only are where the Lexus excels is in brand image. It is not a bad car by any means, but the Lincoln handles better, is better priced, is more comfortable, has a nicer interior and offers more options. Reliability is a litle lower, but not too much lower in real world terms. You just have to like how it looks and be ok with owning a Lincoln. Personally, it my choice would be the MKZ.

    Alex on Autos Front leg room doesn't mean much if you cannot pull the steering wheel close enough to your body. I am 6-3 (190 cm), and I have seen plenty of cars where I can push the seat way back, but then I cannot reach the steering wheel unless my arms are fully extended, which is not a way to drive. So, how is the fore-aft movement on the steering wheel? Can you find a comfortable driving position if you push the seat all the way to the back?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It moves farther back than many, but if you prefer to be a bit more reclined then you will still have a problem.
