    My grandfather hand drove our well back in 1940, 70' deep and hit a natural spring... it's the best tasting water in the area, others have deeper wells that smell like sulphur and taste horrible.

    I notice you used a wing bit to drill the well. We drill wells in michigan done pretty much the way you do. But we use roller carbide button bits. Btw our rig is a gardner denver 1000. Its served the family business very well . our family has been drilling wells over 100 years. Its always nice to see other drillers work

      Awesome to have another driller stop by, Thank You. On Delmarva the drilling is pretty easy, its all sand, all the way down. We do have some issues with hole collapse but we can normally keep control of it with drill fluids.

    Nice process. The only thing ive done in the past that may be better is to attach the poly line for grouting to the casing as you put it down. You wont have issues not getting your poly down that way.

    • @willeyco4458
      @willeyco4458  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Your correct. That works great in deeper holes but when we are only going 50-70 foot we can get the poly down by using water and jetting it. Thanks for watching.

    Do you ever drill well that overflow.. They all do here, as we are on a low plain, surrounded by hills. Usually our wells can lift the water 20-30 feet just on artesian pressure alone.

    Do you have to mix the grout to a certain viscosity before you pump it to seal the hole? I think I remember years ago in New Mexico that grout had to meet something called a Marsh Funnel viscosity specification before you sealed hole to total depth.

    • @willeyco4458
      @willeyco4458  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Consistency / Viscosity are important factors to monitor during the grouting process or big problems can occur.

  • @1pcmedic
    @1pcmedic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So you fill the outside of the casing with grout. At the top its like a mushroom head. When the ground freezes and the mushroom head lifts does that cause a problem and allow contaminants into the well? Is this well for drinking or outside watering only? How is the pump attached to the supply line? Do you use pitless adapters?

    • @willeyco4458
      @willeyco4458  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The clay swells up tight against the well casing and the outside of the drill hole if it’s done properly. That’s why you get the mushroom looking head on the top of the ground. There’s pressure and swelling going on. Methods and materials for sealing wells can be controversial as many studies have concluded different results. Every jurisdiction has their own specific requirements which vary dramatically. A water well in Delaware is basically defined as a hole that intersects natural ground water. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment.

  • @thisisme0214

    How do yall keep the hole from collapsing when drilling or putting the casing in?

    • @willeyco4458
      @willeyco4458  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      In shallow holes the weight of the water itself keeps the hole open in a lot of conditions in our primary drilling area. There are many times as well when we go deeper when we use drill additives to create a thicker water as well as even leave a layer of mud on the sides of the hole to help prevent cave in. There are many drill additives on the market that do very specific things to the water in the system. The water is all basically recirculating while we are drilling so we add the chemicals into the mud pan and it recirculates through the hole by going down the drill bit. Thanks for the question.

    Is a seal required on top of the gravel pack before you grout? In my line of work, we set piezometers for Geotechnical studies, and often I’ll require a few feet of hole plug on top of the filter sand to prevent mud/grout from getting to my filter sand - this may be overkill

    • @willeyco4458
      @willeyco4458  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Actually our state regulations mandate the grout to extend from the surface to the top of the gravel pack. I actually wish we had a buffer in the regulations. Thanks for watching.

      We don't have bedrock in the lower half of the state. There is some in the northern part. We don't offer services that far away. The pressure from the water keeps the hole open. Sometimes we use drilling fluids that are specifically designed to hole the hole open or keep the clay from swelling. Thanks for watching.

    off shore now that's some deep drilling 5 miles also one technical trick you can do I use on every well keeps me out of coming up short is run the casing in a32 to 37 viscosity run trim in the caseing cap the top pump out the trim and up the annulus once 27 vis. has been achieved gravel pack Keep it turning to the right my friend its a tough business but a honest living be safe

    Can anyone drill a well? Do you have to be certified or licensed in the state you are drilling? Here on youtube this guy is building his own house and was going to drill his own well but the state told him it had to be drilled by a certified driller. I imagine it involves sending a report to the state about the quality of the water and making sure the well is over 100 ft. from any septic system along with meeting other setback criteria. Could I just do it and get the results from a lab? Will banks not give you a construction loan if the well is not drilled by a certified driller? What if I ever want to sell the property, and I claim it has a well, but not drilled by a certified driller? If the buyer was getting financing from a bank, I would think the bank would want to see that the well was drilled by a certified driller so they could protect their investment. Are there places that rent out well-drilling rigs? I want to drill my own well on 10 acres I own in northern New Mexico and sell off a five acre piece with a well share agreement. It is in the mountains, so there is a good chance I will be drilling thru rock. Feel free to enlighten me, but I don't have that much money and I wanted to try doing it myself or at least find a way of cutting back on the well expense. The neighbors have been gettin good water at around 300'. Thanks.

      I think I can answer a lot of your questions by saying I can only speak for Delaware but I believe most of our surrounding states all follow similar regulations. A well, as it’s defined differently by every jurisdiction, has to be drilled by a licensed well driller due to the fact you are drilling into aquifers which provide water to many many people. The risk of contamination is very high if you don’t do things properly. Our regulations do not allow anyone that isn’t licensed to drill a water “well”. In Delaware that’s pretty much defined as any hole the intersects the natural ground water. Most banks, in my experience don’t require certification that the well was drilled by a licensed water well driller however, they do require a water test of some sort. I’ve never seen a rental company with a true well rig for rent however there are a few that have geo-technical drilling rigs for small size work. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for watching and I appreciate your comment.

    • @johnpike9612

      New Mexico is terrible for well regulations! If you drill a well and don't follow the guidelines (including drilled by a licensed driller) you could face some serious jail time and a very large fine.

    • @willeyco4458
      @willeyco4458  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We have drilled down to around 420' however our larger rig (seen in the video) is built to drill much deeper if working properly. On Delmarva we have an abundance of water in our shallow aquifers, deeper holes aren't usually required. How much we can do in a day is highly dependent on specifications of the well as well as the drilling conditions. A 100' deep well in great sandy conditions would take 120 minutes or so while that same well in clays could take much longer. As the diameter of the well increases the time to drill dramatically increases. We recently did a video on drilling some Ag Wells for a Poultry Farm th-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=W6wXZEahYwA. That job we set our own best drilling record for number of wells drilled in a day. Thank You for watching.

    I question the grouting the whole well here is why. In many areas you must drill a large pocket below the water sand. If you grout down to the gravel pack in these cases you would be grouting off the watersand. My well here in WV the watersand was 35 feet but its low producing so the well itself is 105 feet this gives plenty of volume to make the well viable. Grouting the way you describe i wouldnt have any water. Here we install a surface casing to bedrock and grout the surface casing only. Then a 4 inch liner pipe is installed to bottom but not grouted then as you did the gravel is put in up over the screen. Anything below the bedrock will not contaminate the well and will be potable.so grouting past bedrock is a complete waste.

    • @willeyco4458
      @willeyco4458  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On Delmarva we drill in all sand and silts. Its imperative to seal the grounds surface off from all the aquifers encountered during the drilling process. Our regulations require grouting the entire hole. Theres always space between the casing and the borehole. Even if its a very small amount, bacteria and contaminants can drain down the side of the casing and into the aquifer.

    • @kenjett2434
      @kenjett2434 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@willeyco4458 different areas and different structural strata does require different ways to construct a safe well. But the one thing that seems should be common no matter where it is, is bedrock. Bedrock is a impermeable layer of thick rock of at least 5 feet. No surface contamination can get past it long as it is properly sealed. So even though you have alot of sand or a strata prone to collapse if you set a surface casing into bedrock and grout it in to surface. They will not be anything from the outside ever get in. The exception to this is when drilling deeper for oil and gas in this case surface vasing must be set well below all fresh water aquifers and cemented back to surface. This is to protect from contamination from the drilling processes and the oil and gas that lays deeper below. Drilling has bern my life a 3rd generation in the field.

    • @willeyco4458
      @willeyco4458  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bedrock is incredibly deep in some areas like Delmarva. No water wells that I know of on the lower part of Delmarva are placed in or under bedrock. The northern part of the peninsula has much shallower bedrock. We confine wells on the lower shore by placing them under clay layers. Clay layers are what separate our aquifers. Drilling conditions change dramatically depending on location. Thanks for watching.

    Why doesn’t the hole you made just collapse. I dug an 8’ hole and that’s as deep,as I could go because the walls collapsed.

      drilling muds, the shape of the hole, and water all keep the hole from collapsing. In very sandy soils we have to use thicker drill muds.

    Good Evening -
    I live in a residential neighborhood constructed in 1970. At that time there were no public sewer lines in the neighborhood. All homes at that time had septic tanks buried it their front yard. Around 1977, the township put in a public sewer line and everyone in the neighborhood hooked into it. All septic tanks were left in the ground. I want to have a well drilled in my backyard but the only access is through the front yard and over the part of the front yard where the unused septic tank is located. My concern is that the extremely heavy drilling equipment with cause the unused septic tank in my front yard to collapse, potentally resulting in damage to the drilling truck.
    My question for you is whether there is well drilling equipment, including trucks, that are light enough to avoid crushing my front yard?

      In Delaware, any abandoned tank or vault of some kind must be either removed or filled with sand. That helps prevent these types of issues. There are well rigs light enough to travel across unstable ground but I doubt any driller will want to run their incredibly expensive Rig across or near a known potential for damage. Thanks for the quiestion

      If you plan on living in that house for a while, you might be better off to just deal with that old septic tank now. Those old septic tanks are typically made of concrete and of varying quality. If you have seen a 50 year old concrete sidewalk or driveway, that would give you some idea of what condition it might be in. You could probably get an excavating company to remove the lid and fill it with sand and replace the lid for less than $1000 depending on your area,

      @@willeyco4458 Thanks for your response. I obtained from my Township the application for the permit to install the septic tank on my property 50 years ago. The tank is nowhere near well drilling equipment would have to pass over to access my backyard. At this point, my concern is that the mud and cuttings involved in the drilling process will run off onto my backyard neighbors property. Can that be prevented or contained?

    To think, when I was a kid we drank water from a hand dug well that was about 50 - 60 feet deep. Gravel driveway and 1,000 gallon underground heating oil tank less than 50 feet away

      We use both primer and glue on all pvc joints. We often use clear primer but we do use purple as well from time to time.
