I so enjoy driving the older cars. Each one has it's own personality. A Yugo does not compare to a 1973 BMW 2002 but that's OK, I love driving them both.

Hi! I rarely click through from one channel to another to seek out a video, but Raby's instaram coverage of this was intriguing and I had to do it - so congrats! Also, top job on the vid.
I had a 1987 944 base in beautiful condition and really enjoyed it, but I wanted to keep the miles down (86k when bought, 91k when sold), so I sold it to make room for a 2005 Boxster S. The 944 was built MUCH more solidly and was MUCH tighter than the Boxster, but it couldn't hold a candle to the Boxster S's usability, power, and handling. My Boxster is also Speed Yellow. Too flashy for me, but everyone else seems to love it. Thank you for your video and comparison.
944 turbo had the power:weight you may want, I’ve got about 250hp and 200ish lbs-feet against 1200 kg and 50:50 balance. It’s a very underrated package. 0-60 in about 6.5 I think.
I beg to differ on the "usability" point... I actually believe the 924 or 944 to be much more usable given the two extra seats (though small, they are still two extra seats) and the hatch.
I have a 1977 early edition 2 Litre and a 1979 Turbo. Both are delightful and well balanced cars to drive. The Porsche snobs do look down their at them if I happen to be in proximity in traffic, a classic event or even at a club event. Yet I get more attention and genuine interest from the public at large, which is both gratifying and amusing. Both cars were dilapidated and neglected when I bought them, both are now fully restored, reliable and I regularly receive offers far exceeding their insured value. I'll not be parting with either nor will I be parting with my 2.7 Cayman, which I think is a future classic. It too was scruffy when purchased and is now my daily driver. In regards to the 924- any vintage- just look at how many restoration vids there are on this platform and the renewed respect and enthusiasm for the model and suddenly Porsche affordability kicks badge snobbery up the Ruckseite!
I'd go for the 924 if on a budget as a cheap Boxster could be a nightmare in repairs. Also, the Boxster has a poor image compared to the retro image of the 924.

Very bad argument there because if you did some research Porsche already made an electric car in the early 1900s....so the mission e concept isnt exactly surprising
The 924 is 150pounds away from being as precise as the boxster, you just need to replace the now tired bushings with polyurethane ones and the front springs with 280lbs ones and you're set for a perfect car, cool, precise handling, great driver's car all around. Great to see a balanced review of the 924S. A couple of things; the 924 also saved Porsche in the 70s and the standard 924S had 150BHP, while the 924S LeMans edition had 160BHP. Some shameless free advertising - appearing on my channel soon will emerge a video of me and my 924S going around Castle Combe. To anyone considering buying one, do it now before they become too expensive, they've been affordable for far too long - say 25 years. If it's the car you've always promised yourself, buy one! As for the Boxter - I'd also have one if I could as I'm a Porsche fan, but I've only driven a 2.7 auto - which wasn't very impressive. It was a trade in and the original owner got £6k for the whole car, he even supplied the matching hardtop he paid... £6k for, when it was just an option, ouch!
Hello! Taiwan has a very hot climate. However, November has always been awesome during the part 11 years since I am here. This small island is worth visiting. Please let me know if you once plan to come. I have started a small car collection too (6 cars yet). Cars in Taiwan are mostly from Japan and have in 99.9% of the cases an automatic gear box. Lately, a lot of people purchase AMG and M-Monsters. At the same time it is very rare to see vintage cars here. Never seen a Lotus Esprit here. I know of one 924S. Looking forward to your next videos. Your car choices and videos are really nice.
Both are very practical and have ample luggage space. The Boxster is more of a sports car while the 924 is a GT. I have a 924 Turbo, and am very pleased with that car. The Boxster 986 is a much more modern car, and the handling is more like a late 911 (991.2) but the gearing is a bit low so highway cruising is not as comfortable.
What these models have in common is that they are entry-level models and therefore many are skeptical. They do not offer the required status, but they were and are excellent sports cars for the money. I had a 924 in the 80's for four years and it was a wonderfully nice car. I used the car mostly for long trips on the continent and on country roads in southern France, for example, it is excellent. You always feel that the car is alive and offers enthusiastic driving, but at the same time it offers enough comfort that long stages on the motorways can be done without getting tired. The original VW 924 engine was nice in the 80's, but today I would probably prefer the larger engine from Porsche in the 924S or 944.
Because of my dad. I've been a fan of Porsches ever since I was a kid. My dad still has his old 924 Turbo and a 914 2.0 that he takes care in his garage. But now, as I'm already 19. I'm now choosing between my two childhood favorites. An original 986 Boxster like this one or a 996 Carrera. I don't know what to pick since owning either of the two has its own pros. I love the Boxster because of its design and its convertible top while the 996 Carrera has a body that stays true to the original 911. The other good thing about the 911 is its privelege but the Boxster is more of an everyday car for me. I need help on deciding for one hahahahaha.
Thanks Jeff.. it's proving pretty popular by my standards.. I thought it would be. Porsche stuff always seems to be. I just need it to go viral and get a few hundred thousand hits and i'll be happy! Planning to do another soon, my GTV Vs a 944, both bought for £1200..
Nice video! I recently bought a 924S with still under 100k km. I think you nailed the experience, just feels great to drive, and as others said its quite easy to maintain. Styling, I think is much less pretentious/ more elegant than the 944. What I would add compared to the boxster, it actually has quite a big trunk space especially when you fold down the seats!
2:23 - It's front engined. 2:59 - Suspension/Chassis based on 70's engineering. Koni adjustable stuff and a suspension guru can dial in a more modern feel. Get Michelin Pilot Sport 2 and a Quaife ATB. Personally I'd ditch the engine and fit in a Golf R TFSi engine in....
I owned and own both these cars. There is no real comparison, the 924S is made much cheaper and to find one like in the video would be amazing. The Boxster is faster, sounds way better and is made better, mine is 2000 with 217 hp. Since this Video Boxster here in the US have gone up in price.
First of all comparing a vintage car with the 986 is stupid. The absolute fact is that the 924S is a more reliable car all around, period! Better built, no bs technology that is expensive to replace like tbe stupid locking system, window regulators, coolant leaks, ims, rms seal, etc etc etc. It was just a crammed built car to make Porsche money and prevent them again from going bankrupt. The 924S values are high and holding their value while the boxster keeps depreciating and if you buy cheap you have thousands in repairs to get it in the better condition. Access to the engine is bs. The MK2 MR2 was a better design with better engine access and air cooling. When tbe boxster works yes more power, handles better but by far I'd go with the 924S
Loved the review - had both a 924 2.0 and a 944T many years ago and keep thinking that now I have more parking space I need to get another Porsche. Probably, given the lack of decent old front engined ones here in South Africa will have the be a Boxster though.
i had a 924 ,924 turbo,944s2, 944turbo s and to be honest the 944s2 was the best of the lot but the 924 wasnt that much behind in terms of grin factor. it felt good and was great on fuel. on a run going between london and cornwall a303 i was getting well over 40mpg ! it could cruise all day at 100mph and you could put quite a bit of gear in the back. i had my guitar a fender amp and other bits stuffed in. great car id get another 924 if i found one at the right price
Once again, another crackin' video! Would have to be a Boxster S for me I think. There are some great buys out there under 9K with pretty low mileage. I do like that 924 S though, which would be great for a bit of home tinkering :) Agree, looks good in white.
LS swap in the boxster and you'd have a monster! the newer boxsters esp the spyder are one of the best looking cars on the market, better than 911s. i had a 924 back in the day. PAIN. lesson learned.
The seats of the 924s probably have risers, just remove them for a better seating position. The instruments are from VDO as with other car manufacturers, but unique to the Porsche 924, 944 type 1 series. The shape of the glasses in the instrument cluster are specially designed to prevent sun glaring. You will not find this in an VW golf, Audi or other Porsche. I really like the 80s look of the dash vs the 90s look of the later models. The 2.0 is a non-interference engine vs the 924s/944 2.5 interference engine so lesser chance of total engine faillure when loosing your timingbelt. The 924s 2.5 has the full alu "Porsche" engine whereas the 924 2.0 has an alu head combined with an iron block. The base 2.0 engine is continued in the turbo, gt, gts and gtp versions, but modified for more horsepower. Ignore the van-engine crap remarks coming from others. The transaxle concept is a good one. Embrace the fact that the transaxle Porsches have a front-end water cooled engine with the gearbox in the back. Just drive above 4000 rpm and you will love it.
Me too my 924 is red sleek and mine I love the fact you hardly ever see them on the road and doesn't look like every other car these days the headlights blow everybodys head that sees them pop up.
Mehh junk cheap ones needs alot of work that's why u got it for 3500. U should had bought the clean sample of it because junk ones always stays as junk and money pit u will and after still a junk. Rule one always buy a good sample of Porsche not a junk. Unless u wanna drive it as a junk and toss is gir parts than different story
@@SAMMYJR00777 that is why i bought it, to work on it. interior is sorted out, everything works. belts, seals, water pump, full coolant system... drive it some more, then suspension overhaul. its a hobby, not a virtue signaling object.
"Loose limbed". Great descriptor. Its always great fun to drive someone else's old Porsche. I've owned old Porsche's and they leak and brake and require a lot of expensive maintenance. Yes they were well engineered and drive great, but they spend a lot of time out of service and always have a long fix it list.
I've read that the 924 S 2.5L 8valve four cylinder was detuned so the lighter 924 would not be faster than the heavier (and more expensive) 2.5L 8 valve base 944. 158BHP vs the 165BHP of the 944.
944 Engine as its a late model and S type 924... By that period the 924 engine was no longer available forcing Porsche to throw in the regular 944 block
Okay so I'm cheating but. I drive a 924 turbo. Everything you said but add more power and the turbo lag. Lots of fun. Also driving Blue and White Porsche from 1980's lots of stories to be told.
I just bought one for $250. It ran when parked, but the mice have eaten all the wiring under the hood (bonnet). It will take a good full day or more to have it running. The paint looks great except the hood will have to be ground down and started over. It is flaking off there.
It seems strange that I consistently hear how fantastic Boxters are yet they also have a stigma. So where does the stigma come from if they're so great? Is it just that they are the cheaper model for a brand that usually sells to rich snobs?
Interesting review not least because I ran a 924s for about 6 years and have since been tempted to buy a boxster on several occasions. In current terms the 924s is just too slow and rather thirsty for the performance delivered. I found the handling a little odd if you try to get the back end out, not that it was easy to do. Perhaps it's an age thing but I compare any potential "sports car" purchase against -say - a 200hp remapped 320 (or 330d) E46 BMW coupe and few cut it. Have you tried the post-2003 Mk3 MR2, as you seem prepared to drive unfashionable cars (as am I) ?
Not really a good comparison, 4 banger (detuned no less) vs 6 banger 40 year old interior vs 20 year old interior. Coupe vs Cab.. Also, the 924S is a rather odd compromise where Porsche detuned it to have a base model.. instead of just updating the actual 2.0 base model with EFI and a new Type 2 interior which really would have sold. For any sensible comparison, compare the 2.0 924 to something in the same price range , today. a Golf Mk1 GTI the Golf mk1 gets silly prizes for a FWD small hatch.. when the 924 is very underrated and so much more fun to drive
The heavy feeling is probably due to the inertia of two large masses separated by the length of the wheelbase - like dumbbells - and relatively narrow track.
I enjoy watching reviews like this but hate it when the people doing the reviews don’t do their research prior to driving a car. Nothing worse than watching a review when they don’t know anything about the car they’re driving. This guy has no clue what he’s driving when driving the 924. Has no knowledge about the engine which is taken directly from the 944 or any other information about the car. Annoying.
I enjoy constructive and accurate criticism of my videos but nothing worse than when the guy writing the feedback has no idea or has not listened properly to the video before writing his comments. I mention clearly at the beginning that the original non S 924 did not have a Porsche engine but that the S model as tested here does. Annoying.
I think all these retro tests are variable...I mean some cars will be more sorted than others. And if the tester did not own one when they were new...hmm....he will not know how it should be! so best to seek out original old road tests...watch those first..then watch tests like this to get an idea of how they are now they are OLD cars!
Catching up on your videos and really liked this comparison. I’ve been looking to get a cheapish rwd car to sling around the backroads in France. Thought of 924 (cause I’d like a front engined car but not heavy) but it is getting more expensive and I wouldn’t want to push it very hard. The Boxster is now affordable and would be excellent for carving up the road, but not something I’d stand on its nose and fling around. So... a Mazda MX5? The Boxster is sweet though. Thanks!
Number27 Thanks. Never been a big fan of the MX5 but it is a great package for the money. I enjoy your channel because you talk about how the car feels. There is a real connection with the cars. I’ll have to binge watch :-)
I’m not sure this is the most knowledgable review. Of course the ‘equivalent’ Cayman is a lot more expensive. There isn’t one. The Cayman was released about 6 years after the 2.5 Boxster was discontinued. And no mention that the 2.5 in the 924 is the same but detuned engine that came out in the 944 i.e. nothing to do with the derogatory comments about van engines.
I’m only 15 and I’m already saving up for a Boxster, it’s like a downgraded 911, too bad I’m like 8,000 away from having enough money to buy one myself
the engine in the 924s was taken from the 944, when wv no longer gave them the base for the van engine they used a less powerful version of the 944 engine
Thumbs up for the 924S, THAT will be my choice, or a Datsun 240Z, or a Volvo 1800S (or E), or a Triumph TR6, or... To me this are super cars because you can have everyday joy and fun on small backroads in these, with "supercars" you are just sitting in very expensive bling-thing !!!
...never heard of the Boxster havening an image problem...quite the opposite...motoring press always loved them. Perhaps the IMS bearing issue on the early ones?
A poorly informed (unknowledgeable) reviewer. Just as the 944 was an evolution up from the 924 Carrera with 928 flavor added, the 924 S was an evolution down (more affordable) from the 944. The engine block in the 944 and the 924S was one bank of the 928 V8. Mechanically, the 924S was identical to the 944 base model with narrower tires and a 924 skin except for 944 highlights (bumpers). The 924S was created for one reason: make a more affordable 944. The original 924 (1970s era) was powered by an Audi 4 cylinder engine and ran rough from the factory. The half 928 block introduced as the 944 engine ran more smoothly due to internal balance shafts (technology Porsche licensed from a Japanese manufacturer. Both the initial Base 944 and the 924S were accurately advertised as having 130 mph top speed. The peak torque curve was fairly flat from around 2500 rpm to around 6000. Getting from 110 mph to 130 mph was a very long drive though. Both enjoyed a front mounted water-cooled engine mated to a rear-mounted transaxle making weight distribution close to 50/50. Motor mounts were somewhat fragile though.
Loved the review! I would also pick the 924 - pop up headlights and that 70's feel makes it just so special and being so light, sort out the suspensions and push a few extra horses out of the engine for the ultimate cheap fun experience!

Thanks for all the lovely videos. 928, 968 and 996 wishes from Taiwan!
Thanks Adreas, say hello to Taiwan from me!! A place I would definitely like to visit sometime. Whats the car culture like?
Interesting to know and that is roughly what I was expecting about car culture in Taiwan.. good luck with your collection!!
Have to agree as a fellow turbo owner it’s great fun. And you get the whoosh every time you accelerate 😀
Calling a 924 a GT is a bit much :D
The 2.5L 924S no longer used the Audi engine at all. It was a detuned 944 engine.
ahh diffearance was pistons comprension was dropped
.lower but is lighter than a 944
What these models have in common is that they are entry-level models and therefore many are skeptical.
WHEN INCREASING THE REVS, WHAT A BEAUTIFUL NOISE TO THE ENGINE, QUITE GREETY.
Great to hear!! Good luck with it and thanks for watching!
Great comparison. More of that style of video would be really popular.
A few years ago I had the same choice instead of the 924 I eneded up going with the 944. Still driving it and enjoying it
Driving is not all about going fast !
Love my 99. Handles corners like it's on rails. Put a chip mod and get A LOT of extra HP!
is 924s an expensive car to maintenance? what should I look to if I buy it?
I owned and own both these cars. There is no real comparison, the 924S is made much cheaper and to find one like in the video would be amazing. The Boxster is faster, sounds way better and is made better, mine is 2000 with 217 hp. Since this Video Boxster here in the US have gone up in price.
924( S ) , 944 (Turbo or S2), 968 , or the 928 (S4 and up)....and as long as it's Manual...and the PRACTICALITY!!!!!!
Having driven both I would choose the Boxter - hands down. Now... if it was a 944, that would be a different story.
Proving that the 944 was just an overweight 924, the 924S engine was detuned to 150BHP, as it would outperform it's bigger 944 cousin during testing.
Great review, a lot of insights, I’m in the market for a 924! can’t stand new cars I’m going back in time 😂
God this takes me back! I had a 2.0L version of the 924 years and years ago, that was slow haha.
I bet Carl.. the S was not exactly a ball of fire either.. but lovable car all the same!
i had a 924 ,924 turbo,944s2, 944turbo s and to be honest the 944s2 was the best of the lot but the 924 wasnt that much behind in terms of grin factor. it felt good and was great on fuel. on a run going between london and cornwall a303 i was getting well over 40mpg ! it could cruise all day at 100mph and you could put quite a bit of gear in the back. i had my guitar a fender amp and other bits stuffed in. great car id get another 924 if i found one at the right price
A Boxster 986 with Spyder/Speedster humps gives it a nicer look in my opinion.
Once again, another crackin' video! Would have to be a Boxster S for me I think. There are some great buys out there under 9K with pretty low mileage. I do like that 924 S though, which would be great for a bit of home tinkering :) Agree, looks good in white.
Cheers Ewan! I'd have to go for a Cayman I think as convertibles just don't float my boat. But honestly, that chassis is fantastic!!
LS swap in the boxster and you'd have a monster! the newer boxsters esp the spyder are one of the best looking cars on the market, better than 911s.
i had a 924 back in the day. PAIN. lesson learned.
What were your major problems with it?
Thanks Marty and enjoy your 924!!
I liked the laid back feeling of my 924, would take it over a 986 and 987 as both roadsters have too much scuttle shake imo 🤔
Me too my 924 is red sleek and mine I love the fact you hardly ever see them on the road and doesn't look like every other car these days the headlights blow everybodys head that sees them pop up.
bought a 944 2.7 NA manual for $3500 last year. Needs work but it is a blast to drive.
Please test a 968
Coming in the next couple of weeks Stéphane.. good timing!!
The absolute best buy would be a 2000 Boxster S....Vastly superior to either of the cars discussed here
944 Engine as its a late model and S type 924... By that period the 924 engine was no longer available forcing Porsche to throw in the regular 944 block
In the late 70s and through the 80s the 924 and 944 saved Porsche. The 944 alone sold 163,000 units!
Okay so I'm cheating but. I drive a 924 turbo. Everything you said but add more power and the turbo lag. Lots of fun. Also driving Blue and White Porsche from 1980's lots of stories to be told.
Thanks for the vid, subscribed!
Great comparison
Boxster S and be done with it. Amazing handling and braking.
They are very, very good. But what if you want the classic experience?
@@Number27 944Turbo or S. :>)
At 4m 30s he states that a 924 is a cool car and insinuates that it's possibly more desirable than a 944! I'm spluttering in my Earl Grey here! Pah! 😁
Question… are all 924s injection ?
I just bought one for $250. It ran when parked, but the mice have eaten all the wiring under the hood (bonnet). It will take a good full day or more to have it running. The paint looks great except the hood will have to be ground down and started over. It is flaking off there.
Next time get one with a title!!
A '78 924 was the first car I bought. I wish I still had it.
I have a 83 924 on the road and I love it
The Cayman didn't come out until a good few years later, hence the price difference
It seems strange that I consistently hear how fantastic Boxters are yet they also have a stigma. So where does the stigma come from if they're so great? Is it just that they are the cheaper model for a brand that usually sells to rich snobs?
I don’t get what is wrong with the boxter image, I’ve never had a Porsche so have no idea what is wrong with the boxter
It os a hairdressers car..
there's nothing wrong with it...just morons who don't or will ever own a porsche..they are awesomw sportscars..
Loved my 987 Boxter
2.0 litre audi concept engine in the early 924 which was upgraded to a 2.5 litre Porsche engine in the later model..
924S - a lot to be said for it, yep. But you didn't really say how pretty it is. Did you?
Not really a good comparison, 4 banger (detuned no less) vs 6 banger 40 year old interior vs 20 year old interior. Coupe vs Cab..
Also, the 924S is a rather odd compromise where Porsche detuned it to have a base model.. instead of just updating the actual 2.0 base model with EFI and a new Type 2 interior which really would have sold.
For any sensible comparison, compare the 2.0 924 to something in the same price range , today. a Golf Mk1 GTI
the Golf mk1 gets silly prizes for a FWD small hatch.. when the 924 is very underrated and so much more fun to drive
What a great video. Really good watch. Top job
Thank you!! Glad you enjoyed it!!
Number27 subscribed! Spend the next few days flicking through the vids!
Thanks, glad you're on board!!
Love your videos!
Thank you TP, very nice to hear that!
The narrow 924s looks surprisingly pretty in white with the teledials
It does doesn’t it!! Thanks for watching Stevie!
The heavy feeling is probably due to the inertia of two large masses separated by the length of the wheelbase - like dumbbells - and relatively narrow track.
I have just bought THAT car.
Stevieboy130664 You mean the exact car our man 27 is driving here?
@@acchaladka yes indeedy - from Phil Raby.
Is this a bloody 944 m8 ?
Annoying.
The 924S actually has a Porsche engine (from the 944).
I think all these retro tests are variable...I mean some cars will be more sorted than others. And if the tester did not own one when they were new...hmm....he will not know how it should be! so best to seek out original old road tests...watch those first..then watch tests like this to get an idea of how they are now they are OLD cars!
Did you own a 924s or 944 when they were NEW in the 80s??
I wish it was 10 years ago when Porsche 924 would sell for a total bargain, even 944 was for like the equivalent of 3k pounds :/
stay away from.early boxters
.pistion sleeves had a tendancy to drop.at idle not at speed was a recall or as porsche calls them a campaige
Thanks!
A boxter will be more rewarding than an mx5 as sharper but an MX5 will allow you to slide around much easier!! And also be way cheaper to run!
Thanks for watching the videos!!
Ha, you’ll get there Chris. Don’t loose faith!
the engine in the 924s was taken from the 944, when wv no longer gave them the base for the van engine they used a less powerful version of the 944 engine
Great info there, thanks buddy
How could it have been taken from the 944 when the 944 didn't exist yet?
@@robertbrandywine There was a 944 in 1987..
I owe a 924 and as well I’m soo happy and don’t give a fuck to others people’s thinks.
Love my 87 944 N/A and much more aggressive looking than the 924
Yes 944s look great!
but the Boxster doesn't have 4 seats for the school run
Thumbs up for the 924S, THAT will be my choice, or a Datsun 240Z, or a Volvo 1800S (or E), or a Triumph TR6, or... To me this are super cars because you can have everyday joy and fun on small backroads in these, with "supercars" you are just sitting in very expensive bling-thing !!!
The Boxster 986 has an image issue?
Image is for reality shows and mirrors.
theplayernkc yea not sure what that means, image issue?
...never heard of the Boxster havening an image problem...quite the opposite...motoring press always loved them. Perhaps the IMS bearing issue on the early ones?
It is a hairdressers car.
Why are you comparing a 986 to a Cayman? There's at least 5yrs difference plus power plus... everything. Nonsense comparison.
924 anytime. 924 true porsche.
If you get the 924 watch out if you need the transmission rebuilt...they are a dog to work on and its hard to find somebody who will do the work.
mac daddy useful info, thanks! And for watching too!
💯 boxster
I will go for 924 2.0 but cant afford it.
