But Lakshmi ji himself in an interview to channel 4 TV, U.K by Nasreen Munni Kabir ji, in 1987 that :-- "If we happen to be working on a tune separately, and we meet and play the tune together, you will find a difference of a few notes in the composition. " These details were shared by Nasreen munni Kabir ji herself with the readers of the daily "The Hindu" dated 19.03 2017,through a detailed write up. The work between LP was well defined. There's an interesting story behind the composition of the all time great song, "Chahunga mei tujhe saanjh savere" In "Dosti". Rafi sahab was sitting with Lakshmi ji for a song rehearsal, afer the the songs of " Parasmani" became superhit. In between the rehearsal, Lakshmi ji was humming a totally different folk song of U. P., which cought the attention of Rafi sahab. Rafi sahab said:-- "Is per dhun banaiye, jise mei gaana chahta hun. " A visibility shocked Lakshmi ji said:- " Rafi sahab, aap ye gaana kaise gaaoge, kyun ki ye ek UP ka lok geet hai, jise ek Mahila, khet me kaam per lage apne pati ke intezaar me gaati hai. " Rafi sahab convinced Lakshmi ji and got him to compose the song for him with some changes. The song turned out to be an immortal song. Rafi sahab and LP both got Filmfare award in 1964 for this song. LP always remembered this with gratitude. In 1969-70, when there was a Kishore da wave created by Rajesh Khanna ji and Pancham da, LP threw their weight behind Rafi sahab, solidly. Even in Rajesh Khanna ji's films, they effectively used Rafi sahab's voice. For example, "Do raaste" and " Mehboob ki Mehandi". Manoj ji always preferred Mukesh ji and Mahendra kapoor ji, to Rafi sahab or any other singer. " " Dil ka na karna aitbaar koi" from Halaki, "Teri zulfon se judai toh nahi maangi thi", Dil ke jharoke me" and others. Rafi sahab was a master in lower octaves as well. The timeless classics "Kabhi khud pe kabhi haalat pe rona aaya", " Is bhari duniya me", "Din dhal jaaye hai" "Saathi na koi manzil" "Jinhe naaz hai hind per wo kahan hai." , "Hui shaam unka khayal aa gaya. " are all low pitched songs. Songs like " Oh duniya ke rakhwale", "Subah na aayi, shaam na aayi", " Mohabbat zinda rahti hai, mohabbat mar nahi sakti " Start on low octave, and gradually go to the highest octave. Rafi sahab had done it all. But as you have very rightly pointed out, it is very difficult to hold on at high pitch. The song " Taqdeer ka fasana ja kar kise sunayein " was recorded first. Ram lal ji was not impressed with the way Mahendra kapoor ji sang the mukhda at higher notes. Shantaram ji also felt the same way, and asked Ram lal ji to get Rafi sahab to sing the song instead.. The humble human being as he was, Rafi Sahab felt that with little more effort, his shagird would make it. But Shantaram ji had the final say. The song became super hit in Rafi sahab's voice. Another example of Rafi sahab's incredible range is the song "Chal udya ja re panchi " The version recording of this song was sung by the ghazal king Talat sahab. Talat sahab's version is also excellent to hear as a ghazal, but the anguish is missing. Similarly in the version recording of "Jinhe naaz hai hind per', Manna da sounds great, but the feeling of agony is missing. All the contemporary singers were great in their own way. Rafi sahab was sum total of all the singers put together. The ace anchor Shekhar Gupta ji in one of his Walk the talk shows, asks Manna da who he considered the best singer among them.
