- NEW CD OUT NOW: ben-maton-musi...
We face a big problem with the diminishing number of organists and lack of good pipe organs. Many are now, sadly, being replaced with recorded music.
I hope this video inspires you to enjoy the sound of organ, mighty hymns and beautiful church architecture, with the help of another of my very FAVOURITE hymns...
More videos on the way, feel free to subscribe to stay up to date.
Visit my website www.benmatonmusic.co.uk for more info on me, my work and the wonderful ancient church of Sarum St Martin, Salisbury, UK where this film was recorded.
You, Sir, are a treasure! Your playing is uplifting and brings me to tears! GOD bless you from Victoria, Texas. F. Rojas
This was my father's favorite hymn, and he requested it be sung at his funeral ( before he died, obviously! ) A talented baritone sang it. Dad was a forester, and the words spoke to him directly. Thanks for playing it. ☮️
I have never seen or heard you before but I love your playing , I would like to hear you play an organ composition on that very impressive organ. I also strongly approve of your respectful outfit fitting for a church organist (White Shirt and Tie). Instead of open necked shirt and jeans worn by some of these evangelical musicians
This song was my first solo in church at like 16 years old, the pastor kept asking when i would sing it again !!
One my most favourite and cherished hymns. You say what I feel - this should 'go on for ever'. But with so many churches abandoning traditional hymns like this for impossible-to-sing and banal 'modern' stuff, they are increasingly sidelined and only recalled as a melody to accompany the passing-round of collection plates.
I believe hymns like this bring blessing and are blessed of God and MUST continue.
Well said and well done for all you do Ben.
Thank you for sharing this and well played too!
Oh Lord, my God
When I, in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration
And then proclaim, my God, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Thanks for the words, I don’t know all of them
God wouldn't understand if you didn't speak in really crude broken middle English. He's most greatfull for all the thou''s and thee's. And of course he'd never have guessed how wonderful and fantastic he is, without humans to inform him. Surely such a magnificent being needs all the ego massage he can get. 😆
@skepticusmaximus184 what is it that you hope to come from what you said?
Great hymn beautifully played on that spectacular organ. You are such a professional organist and I guess a committed Christian. This shows in your playing. God bless you Ben
May your desire to keep our heavenly organs in our churches be blessed by our Father 🙏 in heaven
Thank you for sharing the hymns of Praise with the You tube world. .
I love this hymn. Makes me cry. You look great dressed in the gown.
Better than T shirts.
This is one of my absolute favorite hymns and I think one of the best versions I have ever heard. I've heard a lot of hymns in my day having sung in church choirs since I was 15. I am 63 and still singing in a little church in Florida that needs musicians. I've asked God to allow me to keep singing for His glory for as long as He wishes it. You have your life ahead of you which is providential for everyone. Deo Gratias.
Amen , Well said ,Sir
I stumbled upon your videos…..since I can remember I had a deep love for organ music. No other instrument can lead a congregation in worship to sing the praises of our Lord and Saviour like the organ.
I personally prefer organs like this one, where the organist is fully in charge of the instrument and not a computer.
May our Lord bless you abundantly for this work of love
Nothing provides the sense of reverence that an organ like this can give. This is the way I love to hear my favorite classic hymns. God bless you sir, truly enjoying your dedication and talent to glorifying this worship music.

My lovely mother would belt this out at the top of her voice and with pure joy on her face well into her 80s. The organist never stood a chance. Thanks Ben, beautiful memory.
Very majestic.
I first heard this hymn when sung by a Pentecostal woman with her friends in Denton and a Roman Catholic contingent led from Blackfriars, Oxford. It gives me the shivers and I cry as it reminds me of those days as a Roman Catholic French Canadian Québec Rhodes Scholar in 1970 or so. Now I sing it in church at Saint Aloysius in Montréal. Thank you so much and may God bless you and keep you.
I love this Hymn. We continue to sing it in our Church. Thank you Ben for playing it so majestically!
Great playing & sound for a small organ. Another favourite hymn. Thks Ben for all these short videos on abandoned organs/churches.
Your a very fine young christian.gentlemen God Bless You from Aotearoa New Zealand 🇳🇿🙏
May I also say how smartly turned out you are. I love to see a white shirt and black tie.
Thank you for sharing the hymns of Praise with th You Tube world..
This hymn is from Sweden! And i love it!
It seems like there has been a tremendous increase in the number of younger people playing the organ since the Hauptwerk platform appeared and it became affordable to have a home organ for practice. A high school organ student of mine recently competed at Baylor University along with 9 other high schoolers, and not only didn’t he win, he didn’t even place 2nd. He played the Bach G minor fugue and the Boellmann Toccata both from memory. The level of competition was incredible. All that to say, I believe the organ is once again on the rise in the world.
Bless you from France !
God Bless Ameria
I love this hymn and the organ has the great system of coupling.
Just wonderful - thank you so much!
Thank you so much for playing that hymn . Memories of my grandparents in their home playing and singing 'How great thou art ' . Brought them close once again x
A beautiful piece, I've never seen another piece that glorifies God more than any other!
I get asked for this at so many weddings, and funerals. Plus, it pops up quite often at regular services. It's a joy to play. I wish I had the stop range that you do though!
There is a profound connection between the human and the Divine, that is best exhibited via musical themes. Nothing moves the Soul more closely to God than spiritual music. Doctor George Whitehead
now THAT is how you play the organ
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Amen
Love how great thou art. I am very grateful that we still play the old hymns in our church. I’m am very blessed by God to be able to play these beautiful hymns on our organ at church
One of my favorite hymns and played very majestically on a beautiful organ
I love this hymn, it was sung at my Aunt Sallys Funeral and I will always remember her by this song and Amazing Grace.😢❤❤
Ben, to see your enjoyment in playing this hymn is a real blessing. Thank you.
From Pretoria South Africa.
This man is incredible
Köszönöm szépen !
The Nations Favourite Hymn. Thank You Ben
I love this hymn.
Power & Majesty!
Thank you! God bless your ministry. ☺️
Beautiful hymn which I believe came from Sweden as O Store Gud which was sung at my father’s funeral. I feel your love of the verses sung to all as you so beautifully play this hymn with so much feeling.
As you say Ben its a tragic loss to hear recorded music particularly in a church of all places. Organists like you are gold dust, being an x choirboy ( Christ Church Bath ) I so appreciate your talent & enthusiasm for small church's & their organs. You give me so much pleasure, many thanks! John in Monmouth
"How great thou art" was made famous by the Billy Graham organisation back in the fifties, and it deserves every airing it's had since!
Yes, it opened every broadcast of "The Hour of Decision" and sung by George Beverly Shay, in his amazing deep voice. This video brings back the memories!
Good job man. I enjoy your playing
Thank u for playing such a beautiful h. How Great Thou Art..great painist
Thank you very much! 😊
Praying for you and May God bless your work.
Absolutely gorgeous
One of my favorite songs.❤❤ you play it so good. Beautiful.
There is the organ, and you ARE the organist.
As im in a cathedral choir we sing this hymn and i used to play this hymn on the keyboard (keyboard setting: Organ)
Great Ben ! Such a simple yet very moving hymn. I play it a lot at our little church.
You bring reprieve and comfort amidst the chaos and violence in these uncertain times.
Love the introduction too
God bless you!
I'm delighted with your musicality. This hymn is sung in Brazil with a translation by Nathanael Emmerich, my grandmother's cousin. It's a very inspiring hymn!
Beautiful ❤❤❤
Such a beautiful hymn. It takes me back to my childhood-I was a treble.
He plays as I like the hymns. No fancy filling bits.
Very good!
Thank you.
It's a shame seeing all these churches and organs going. Unfortunately, we can only truly preserve them if we preserve the very spirit that inspired them.
Of course, Christianity needed something like a pipe organ to give praise to something greater than themselves or even their kingdoms.
Of course modernity, where the individual and the dollar is king, does not need or want to preserve something like a pipe organ. We have cheap, instant gratification, who needs something such as an organ? Or do we tell ourselves.
Rant aside, that was beautiful. I am not a good singer so I rarely sing, even by myself. Christmas mass last year with the pipe organ playing was an exception to this, as was listening to this song at home by myself.
FABULOUS ! 🙂
Not just in England, in South Africa as well.
One of my favourite hymns
Stunning ❤
Praise the Lord... Amen.🙏❤
Beautiful
It is a travesty, pure vandalism and a criminal act to discard perfectly restorable historical pipe organs in exchange for either inadequate electronic substitutes or ‘Pop Groups’ and recorded music. I am speaking as a professional organist in Hull who has been more of less forced out of my post at a church who favour worship songs and have no interest in organ music or maintenance.
i play an 1866 organ and play hymns like this. I think you are correct. It is criminal to destroy vintage organs. But sadly nobody goes to church so the churchs dont have the money which is lousy
@@HashbrownsandsausagesThe mosques, on the other hand, are packed.
@@staffie1uk Exactly. They still go to ther churches.
Really enjoying the series from this young and talented organist....as Ben says, organs and organists are being demolished....maybe it’s cheaper for the priest to turn up with his phone, plug into the house PA and just run the backing tracks? I used to be a organist /choir director at a large parish church but after years of developing the choir, creating a good reputation for providing music etc. for wedding and funerals plus all the hidden values of bringing together people around the music life of the church....then in comes a young new priest who had no interest in music...it didn’t take long to take it down....Christmas is coming....I bet they regret it when they want their carols sung?
That is tragic. My sincere sympathy.
Man you are great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A beautiful soul playing a beautiful song. Thank You Ben
Beautiful! Your music is so inspirational! Awesome to watch you play !Covington, GA USA
very love it.
Beautiful. Thank you from South Africa.
Our gospel group plays this frequently. We love it! A true tragedy about the organs. I hope someone is advocating for them.
Indeed!
One of my absolute favourites. Beautifully played, Ben.
Thanks!
Wonderful
Beautiful music 🎶 Thanks!❤
My dad's favorite❤
I would love to see what Ben could do with a trumpet en chamade.
Thank you, from dark-sky (Tõravere) campus of Tartu Observatory, in south-central Estonia.
Uplifting!
Another masterpiece
Bravo 👏👏👏👏👏👏 Bravo !!!!!!!
Nice tracker action there, could you do another video of this hymn with it in B flat, please?
It is sad to see wonderful organs go to the tip, but perhaps there'll be a re-emergence of synthetic (Hauptwerk type) organs. I'm in 2 minds about it - because I am very sentimental about real pipe organs, at the same time I sort of see that (quality) digital organs are just progress - much like electric cars are replacing combustion engines.....
Thanks
In india also no organ are left in north side only old churches are left some of them people are using as wool thread factory 😢 I have been to 2 place in north mainland side of India solan church build by Britishers are still active I use to go for church when I was in class 2 my father was a service man during that time, I have moved to northeast now and iam very eager to learn how to make organ instruments so that I can use it in my church here iam learning piano right now I have reach grade 4 in piano, my future plan is to travel to England and learn to make organ and make friends as well
Thanks God
Interesting most people think this hymn comes from Evangelical Protestants, but in fact it’s from the Lutheran tradition
It’s originally Swedish Lutheran. There’s a slight resemblance in tune to The Horst Wessel Song, but it’s older and if anything that song did the stealing.
Carl Boberg was Mission Covenant Church of Sweden
I can't understand how people could think a hippie with a guitar and a tambourine could ever be preferable to this. Jesus wept.
While I love the organ and the way Ben plays the old hymns that I love, please read Psalm 150 before you write off more :modern" forms of worship. Perhaps the "hippie with guitar and tambourine " is the original format of worship after all.
@@Anagrams458 got ‘em 😅 lol
@mattbowman5450 to "get 'em" wasn't my aim. I just wanted to point
out that worship music has changed over time. As Ben pointed out in one of his videos, before the advent of the organ, worshippers were led by a band of musicians who then became obsolete.
I also felt that using the bible verse, "Jesus wept" was inappropriate in this context.
@@Anagrams458 you’re right and thanks for calling me out here! if you saw my reply to another similar comment on this video you would’ve seen me say the exact same thing you’re saying here. I was just referencing John 4 instead of Psalm 150 lol I suppose I was a little brazen with the tongue in cheek remark here, but I believe we’re on the same page 👍 I love worship in all of its forms, and I’m more than stoked to have conversations like this with other brothers and sisters in Christ 😊
@@Bludangel2-4A 😊 ah, I missed your other comment.
Ben we so much want to buy your recordings Music from St . Martin’s Salisbury please advise where we may get it. Thank you Andrew Green
Dear Ben
You know that you are here for a very specific purpose and that is to proclaim the message of Christ in Salisbury
❤❤💞
Further to my previous comment regarding modern music in the church.
I must admit to liking quite a few of the moderner hymns, some of which are “Organ Friendly”. Because some of the words in them are extremely worshipful and meaning. What I do not like is the ones which are “Happy Clappy” and create almost hysteria in a congregation. Also I cannot abide “Jazzed Up” versions of some well loved traditional hymns for the sake of making them more attractive to the modernists.
I am all for our evangelical mission, to spread the word, but to destroy reverence by pleasing the “Crowd” is a move too far in my opinion.
The last time I watched BBC Songs of Praise, I thought I was watching a Variety Show or Pop Concert!!!
Originally a Swedish hymn made by a Swede.
