Having your sweet, beautiful, and big-hearted wife do this story was brilliant. She brought so much sincerity and empathy to this moving story that I had never heard of before. Another new bit of interesting history of which I hadn't been aware. "The woman Sherlock Holmes" sure had a colorful history and name (Mary Grace Quackenbos)! She was so advanced in her business practices. So great to see Mrs. History Guy present this story, and History Cat made a cameo appearance, too. Many of Mary Grace's cases could have come from today's headlines.

A husband and wife team presenting interesting but forgotten history. I am so envious! I love history, too, and I subscribed after watching my first video. Congratulations and keep them coming!
Absolutely brilliant! I'm really pleased that this little-known aspect of NY history has been opened up. What an incredible story and what an amazing lady. Thank you Madame History for allowing us to understand and remember this aspect of what went on, back in the day. Thank you. Rory
Great to see the ‘partnership’ on screen, you have both done a brilliant job in building this channel on such strong foundations of well researched and passionately presented ‘forgotten history that deserves to be remembered’.
I've been binge watching at work and so I haven't commented much. However I read a comment the other day that was critical of the wife's narration. So I had to stop and watch this one as well as listen. She's great. She's a nice change of pace and absolutely nicer to look at. She'll get better as she goes, too.
The Dynamic Duo, great job ..! My late uncle was a huge fan of Mary Grace and told me the whole story in the 1960's, he was a history buff and himself a Captain with the Pinkertons (now known as Securitas), specializing in missing persons.
We NEED to honor and REMEMBER more women in history; please continue to show the other half of society and things they contributed to history worth remembering ❤️
Peonage lasted wholesale into the latter half of the twentieth century. In the late 50s there was the "company store". In rural West Virginia, where I partially grew up, as well as parts of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio, coal companies made sure, through various means, that the greater portion of wages returned to the company. This practice was also employed in the South in agricultural and even manufacturing concerns. Bear in mind that these tactics of control were practiced on the poor whites as well as poor blacks. Perhaps it began as a weapon to coerce ex-slaves, but greed is colorblind except for gold and silver, so very quickly the practice came to be used against sundry and all that could be entrapped. On a limited basis, it persists to this day, though in many altered forms. Thank you both for a job well done. You both seem to appreciate not only history, but the art of storytelling as well. The "Rememberer" is an honored position that has lineage far back into the dim lite dawn of man, and his need to use history as a guide for an unknowable future. (It's so sad that we no longer correctly value history to help us avoid dangers.) My hat is off to both of you. 👍👍
My father introduced me to your channel, it has been fantastic! I'm quite surprised that I hadn't heard of Ms. Grace before. What an amazing and big-hearted woman!
When you find a great channel “like this one” it’s always fun over time to watch the subscribers numbers become larger and larger. History guy, we’re hooked!
Great video! Looks like you two have an amazing partnership. The imagery of this clip reminds me of a college term studying “How the Other Half Loves” by Riis. Thank you for the reminder for all of us about peonage, so we can think about it possibilities even today.
The day The History Guy Channel almost became the The History Gal Channel. It is history that deserves to be remembered. Lol. A fairly knew subscriber and still trying to catch up.
I've seen so many of your videos now and I must say, you both are passionate about history, you tell these stories with a certain amount of love, and very real emotions that pertain to each individual moment in history, and those that watch them(myself included), can't help but feel as if we are right there reliving these moments of history without actually being there. I certainly can't claim to have a degree in history, but the passion for it is without a doubt, with me always. So I thank you for these videos, they make my day no matter the circumstances, better! I know without any hesitation at all that all the scriptures I've read over my lifetime, hold to what I've always believed to be true anyway, that there is in fact nothing new under the sun, and that those that choose not to understand, learn from, and believe history, are the ones who are doomed to repeat it. Again I thank you both and please keep these videos coming, you really never know who may stumble across one of these videos, and stop in its tracks, a doomed potential repeat of already lived history. You guys are awesome and from the bottom of my heart I thank you both, great job!
Crazy how the shop owner was so worried about selling the place that she didn't even care that the buyer was the one who suspected her of murder. Good show!
