  • In this video, we’re going to talk about how to use surface imperfection maps to add realism to our rendered materials within Vray for SketchUp.

Specifically in this video, we’re going to use maps from the website Poliigon.com. You may remember last week I did a video on downloading and utilizing textures from Poliigon in SketchUp and Vray, which I will link to in the notes down below.
The textures in this tutorial are all free textures that you can use in your renderings - in addition, Poliigon also has a paid option with access to many more materials. Note that I did receive a month long Freelancer license for Poliigon.
One of the other map types contained on Poliigon is the surface imperfection map. This map is designed to be applied in addition to the other materials from Poliigon to make them look used. One of the things you may notice is that in real life, materials are rarely as perfect as they look in renderings, which is why these maps can be used to add a more realistic feel to your renders.
In this case, we’re going to download and use the free Smudges Large texture.
    LINK TO STUDIO VIDEO
Note that unlike the other materials, we’re going to create a material for our texture, but we’re going to apply our surface imperfection map to the opacity section, under color correction. What this is going to do is allow us to drive the opacity of the material, which is what we want since this material is basically see-through except for in the Smudged areas.
Note that you can adjust the power of the brightness to change the power of the effect.
Now we’re going to create a 3rd material, and the type of this one is going to be a blend. This allows us to blend multiple materials together.
When we create our blend, you’ll notice that you have the option to add a base material, in this case we’ll select our wood material, then we’ll click the plus button to add an overlay layer.

Why not just adding that smudges map to reflection glossiness slot and apply color correction, you will receive the same possibilities and effects, as i can see?

can we use the blend option for this instead?

Hey! So this is what i saw in another tutorial over. They applied the surface imperfections maps as bitmaps as the glossiness for a material, and that seemed quite quicker. Do the results vary a lot between the two?
Thanks for the tutorial, love your work!

whenever iadd surface imperfections like what was in the video, my displacement and bump maps are not applied. It is just a flat surface with the surface imperfections. Then I tried without imperfections, the disp maps and bums are showing in the render

This is fantastic. do you know any way of painting this kind of effect. there was a v-ray video a while ago about using a photoshop prepared mask to define the blend between two materials. for example, Could you use a similar technique to place the smudges only around the edges of the face? Love to hear your thoughts.

Basically what you said - just paint out the areas that you don't want with a mask, then export your image :)

thanks for your tutorials, I think you can have more realistic effect if you had the map on the glossiness

this doesn't work for glass materials as you can't set the size. My surface texture ends up tiny and I don't know how to change it. I'm really stuck

Hey bro. can you please tell me the config of your workstation? as i am very confused what hardware is best suited for the rendering.
    presently i have a
    i7 8th gen,
    16 gigs of ram,
    250 gigs ssd,
    1050ti gpu.
    waiting for your reply.

Should be in the link below the video - your workstation should be plenty powerful enough to run the renders. If you need more info, I recommend checking Vray's website for recommended system requirements...

Another question, in the same material, how can I scale two textures to a different size? Thank you again

    • @Thesketchupessentials
      @Thesketchupessentials  5 ปีที่แล้ว

You'd have to right click and make one a unique texture from the other...
