- Skateboarding the steep hills in San Francisco is undoubtedly dangerous, but for these skaters, it offers a sacred place to find stillness.

Props to New Yorker Mag for getting into the thick of the story and letting the skaters dissect what they do in the process. "Violent ballet" is such a great phrase to explain city life in general but also very apparent to skating.
Loved that phrasing. "It's like a violent ballet, bro." - Dude, the poet
Word violent does not picture skating at all..
But it's how he sees it and i do respect that.
Violent Ballet is what i would call a John Woo movies..

My friend lost half his brain bombing. Very experienced downhill rider. The turning car never saw him. Its been about 20 years since. I think of the guilt the driver must carry. My friends mother who stopped her life to care for him since the day of the accident. And of my friend who's life is forever changed.. So stupid not wearing helmets in such an unforgiving pursuit and terrain. I was reckless back then too.
Yeah a helmet can save so much.
especially when theyre bs powersliding at 40+ mph
oof, so scary. i used to bomb hills in the 90s that none of my friends would go near. and of course without a helmet. it makes me cringe thinking about it.
Yeah this video was cool, but every downhill content needs to have either people wearing helmets or a disclaimer. The way they showed it in this video made it seem that as long as your experienced and with people you trust you'll be fine. That ain't true, accidents happen, buckle up
Thanks for sharing that. I'm sorry you lost your friend.

Growing up South of Pasadena in the early 80's I had two sweet hills to bomb down on the way to school. One day I had the perfect crash, the wabi sabi of my skating career, on the second hill just passing the entrance to The Old Mill. I was in full tuck, head first, arms behind my back like a speed skater, and I hit a magnolia tree seed pod. Physics happened and I did a clean front flip to perfect backpack and soles of my feet landing. I slid/ran it out; no trauma, no road rash, kept using the backpack and the deck was fine. It’s interesting these guys are frowning upon those hill bomb competitions. They genuinely care about not being reckless.
You will find anyone who does something dangerous that cares about it is always against others doing it. You find it a lot in the psychedelic community. Safety is #1 because its a rush yet still dangerous. No one wants someone to die doing something you yourself love so you have to put all the safety precautions out there so it's in your hands whether you die or not.

Idk why I can't get myself to enjoy the Dolores hill bombs that have happened in the past when I, myself have enjoyed hill bombing even though it is very dangerous. Its because of exactly what you said as well as one of the skateboarders in the video saying how he would rather be very close with a few people while bombing hills because he knows they are able to control themselves whereas a large group of random skaters get together its bound to be a mess like they also said.
@@alancrome3684 what about doing a hill bomb while on psychedelics?

The reason I clicked on this is also because it's dangerous.
This is the morbid nature of humans.
Thank you for treating skateboarding as something positive and beautiful!
That's why I love being a skateborder...greeting fron Mexico!
definitely something special about skate boarding. I grew up on it. Peralta was the king back then. We had no pipes or parks, so it was all out on the street, carparks, hills etc... and the occasional empty building site
Having buttboard races down lombard st at 2am in middle school is one of my fondest childhood memories.
Dang did you road rash hard tho?
Sounds hella fun
Nothing like being a 58 year old skateboarder to have zero problem wearing my helmet and pads *Triple Eights, one of the best gear sets BTW. I grew up in the 70-80's skatepark era where all the parks were privitized and had a mandatory helmet policy, so I was always used to having gear on.
I wish this was the norm, a lot of people have been injured because they don’t wanna be seen wearing a helmet
I have no problems with skateboarding and have loved watching the sport for many years, but I simply can't understand why none of these guys wear a helmet. Someone I knew growing up hit his head skateboarding and was taken off life support because of the severity of his brain damage. It happens. For how cautious they say they're being and understanding the risks, I would think wearing a helmet would be a priority.
Thats the point. The thrill wouldnt be the same with it on. Its the complete exposure to the danger that makes it so fun
Bombing hills has always been one of my favorite things to do. I just turned 41 yesterday and have been skating for 36 years now. I live on a big hillside so there's plenty of hills to skate. It's not that dangerous unless you're doing something stupid. You can't just jump in head first. You're gonna end up in the hospital. The feeling you get when you get to the bottom is the best. You're so stressed out, yet you're so happy at the same time. You're glad it's over, but you want to do it again. That's why I do it.
You definitely have so much experience in skating. do u have any tips not to get this speed wobbles thing while hill bombing?

Still love to speed on my Raleigh and taking on homemade jumps--my favorite thing as a kid.
I really love and respect what they are doing. Hill bombing on quads is one of my favorite things in the world but PLEASE feature skaters who wear a helmet AT MINIMUM. Kids see these videos and think they can do the same thing and end up with life changing traumatic brain injuries. And it's not even kids- anyone who skates could get one no matter how advance and proficient in skating they are. Even the skaters in this video touched on how dangerous and scary this is. All it takes is one bad fall on your head and then life as you knew it is done.
good luck finding skaters who wear helmets. There's like... four or five of them lmao

There's a crew of people in San Francisco who do something similar but with the ability to stop if needed. They use longer boards (longboards) and softer wheels that let them slide their board sideways like a snowboarder to control their speed. It seems like most of them if not all of them wear helmets. If you look up "sunset sliders san francisco" you can find some stuff on TH-cam. It seems like for this crew (in the New Yorker video) part of the appeal is not having control
Trust me these guys have control and are hyper focussed . They even know how to fall at this speed. I promise you will never feel more alive than rattling down a hill on a skateboard in clothes you can wear to the bar afterwards. No helmet / gloves required.
@DanielBx look up James Kelly or Josh Neuman raw runs. they go like 60 mph down mountain roads. it's not kooky to ride downhill using equipment built for that purpose. bombing on a street deck with little trucks and rock hard wheels and no helmet / no slide gloves is unnecessary. all you can do is go in a straight line or carve a bit and there's no way to stop if something happens outside of your control like a car pulling out of a driveway or a truck blocking an intersection. even people like Sergio Yuppie (look him up too) who ride hard wheel setups just as fast if not faster than the guys in this vid can still stop if they need to, and they do crazy tricks while going down the hill. riding a street deck down a hill with no way to stop is just as impractical as trying to kickflip a giant downhill longboard deck in a skatepark. your attitude is equivalent to hating on a downhill mountain bike rider for not using a bmx bike with pegs on it when they go down the mountain. if it's your thing to bomb on a street deck without being able to stop then fine but don't hate on people for using equipment designed for their chosen activity.
