I actually worked for the parent company of that acid manufacturer. They are in the states but have a subsidiary in Sidney. The formula for that product, Mo-Flo, used to be 99% Sulfuric Acid and a 1% odor cap. It was discontinued in the US 10 years ago.

    From my chemistry book
"Copper reacts with hot and concentrated sulphuric acid to form copper sulphate, sulphur dioxide gas and water."

and it's the Sulphure Dioxide which redissolves in the moisture in the lungs, throat, eyes etc, to form another acid which literally burns the linings in the body
Goodness knows what lunatic thought it was a good idea to pour that stuff into a blocked drain that was leaking over the floor - even diluted it wouldn't do the expensive carpet any good, nor any drips on the stainless sink - never mind anything going into the between floor spaces in a high rise block!

I remember a few years ago considering one of those shoe boxes. The reason I considered it was because I couldn't find another place (rental crisis). The shoe box (actually more like 3/4 of a shoe box as the room was more a triangle *single bed in the corner , small tv and that's about it*). Of course it was well overpriced as well. I would have had to put everything in storage and downgraded my bed. Thankfully I didn't.

With the amount of acid he was dealing with, a box of bicarb would be needed. I would have dumped half a box of the stuff down the drain to save the pipes and the equipment. Running water isn't enough to get rid of all of that concentrated acid.

    • @Jcreek201

Here in the states we can use lye (sodium hydroxide) as a drain cleaner. It's basic instead of acidic. It tends to work pretty well unless the blockage is real bad (or something it can't dissolve). I've used it a number of times to clear drain blockages in my house, including once for a main line clog (poured it directly down the main stack vent on the roof).

Glad you are ok Ollie. Sulphuric acid is pretty nasty stuff. No matter how carefull you are, there's always an element of surprise and it nearly got you. Best lesson ever, you are not gonna forget that, i guess. Stay safe.

Very glad to hear of your escape from the acid trap! That last plummer should have left some sort of warning note concerning the acid instead of the bottle. Even more glad to see you're OK

Ollie, nice view from the apartment.
That is certainly a tough acid to unclog.
Not good for your eyes, luckily you had water nearby.

My heart skipped a beat when i saw the smoke. That strong can burn your lungs or collapse them. Dangerous in a confined space. Not to mention making your able brittle. You did a awesome job. Glad you didn't burn your eyes. I can't believe they left the acid like that. Not good. Beautiful city. Nice view. Be safe sir
