    We've always wanted a Mercedes Sprinter Van like yours. We shopped and learned and rented all kinds of class B rvs.
    Then we happened to have an opportunity to get a used pleasureway but it was on the Ford Transit platform. Ontour 2.2.
    it checked a lot of boxes for us...and we bought it last October.
    I just retired in March and my wife and I are currently one month into a 6 month road trip with the rv and we're happy with it. No regrets.
    Thank you for the inspiration your weekly program has given us!!! We are having a blast! And we're seeing awesome places Every day is Saturday.
    I can't believe you made the huge leap to Ford. It further validates our decision.
    THANK YOU and good luck with the custom build!

      So glad you are enjoying your ride.
      Actually, the only reason we bought the Ascent is because John didn't fit in the Lexor. PW wasn't building on the Ford chassis at the time. Lots of people have their minds set on the Sprinter and realize later they should have kept an open mind. There are pros and cons to all of them but we think the Ford will better suit our needs.

    Sounds like a dream van! George is very meticulous and his builds are beautiful and it will be fun to watch his videos as he builds your van :) We decided to take a custom build route so we could keep it simple without a lot of technical things to break down. We ordered our Transit in Feb, Avalanche Gray also, but we got the mid-size length so it would fit in front of our son's home. We heard a week ago that surprisingly it has gone into production but we haven't seen a VIN yet.

    Be careful with the Air Conditioner you get. We have a lithium Coachmen Beyond on the Food Transit chassis. They used a 12V Premier A/ C that is woefully inadequate. It barely cools at all. We are replacing it with a Truma Aventa 120v A/C that everyone reports as being wonderful, and capable of freezing you out.

    You are going to love the Transit. Normally I would say that you will miss your shorter van but since you are already used to having the two bikes on the back and they will now be in the van garage, you probably won't even notice. And since you are doing a custom build, you can now address 4 season capability, so you won't have to stress when camping at elevation. We came close to upgrading to the EKKO for that reason which is also on the Transit chassis.

    Cool, we also went from PW to Ford Transit AWD high roof for many of the same reasons. I’m tall and we wanted our ebikes inside.
    We managed to get everything in a 148” van except since we live in the Pacific Northwest we passed on the A/C. We went with a E/W bed with a small slide for feet to get 84” bed length and queen bed that is over a big slide tray that our ebikes, on big slide tray fit on, plus other storage bins. The water tank is on one side, lithium batteries etc on the other plus Isotherm hot water heater off the engine heat. We have done the Vancompass 2.0 lift and no low slung tanks or propane. We also skipped the solar since alternator charges batteries so quickly. We have a front lounge and two showers one inside at front and one at rear doors. We have lived with it a year now and only thing I am probably going to change when I have a moment is the bike slide. I will change from one big tray to two trays (1 for bikes and 1 for storage bins) Couldn’t be happier. I really like George’s work but I custom built this van myself.

      @@FromShetoMe We put in Thetford cassette toilet on a slide out drawer from under the sink that slides into door walkway and stows when not in use. Cassette comes out of back (side) of slide inside sliding door for dumping and cassette water fill also there so no holes on outside of van for cassette. Kitchen unit has sink closest to door with toilet under and induction cooker and drawer unit below near bed that has a divider notched between bed and counter giving physical separation between kitchen and bed. Opposite side of van we have tower style unit with the compressor fridge above two deep drawers for pots storage bottom drawer, plates & glasses etc next drawer up, fridge at easy view to open and get stuff in/out (my must have have convenience item) and small microwave then systems panel above for heat thermostat rear overhead bedroom lights and water pump shut off. Under bottom drawer is (gasoline) heater and water pump for easy service (remove bottom drawer). In front of the tower unit is a jump seat allowing for my wife and I to eat facing one another and a 24 x 32” lagune table that with both front chairs swivelled has inside eating for 3. We wanted to have a full time bed and be able to read/eat if one of us wanted to sleep or nap and also be protected from possible bad weather outside. Highly recommend placing heater mid van, over under passenger seat as best heat distribution throughout van.

    I'll be interested to see what you decide for a toilet. Our Transit has arrived at our upfitters but it'll probably be a couple months before it's our turn for a build out. Like you, we don't want a black tank. We've narrowed it down between the Separett or a Laveo. The Laveo gets points for ease of emptying and containing odors with the downside of complexity and having to buy (and store) custom bags. The Separett can use plain old garbage bags, it seems to handle odors with a vent, but more stinky to deal with emptying than the Laveo. A cassette toilet doesn't interest us at all.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another viewer told me about the Wrappon Toilet but it seems to be more in line with the Laveo. I think the way to use the Separett is in combination with something like kitty litter that is sprinkled in after each use and also by diverting the liquids to a gray tank.

    Great and exciting news about the new van Debbie. Being an old hand at Van travel, you and John have a pretty clear idea what works for you and an advantage at being able to design the new one.....well, doesn’t get any better than that. Being a tall girl myself, and my son is John’s height, I understand completely his issues with bumping the head, hurts every time.. Good for you two, cannot wait to see the finished product. Best wishes and safe travels, love your videos.

    Since your getting the extended body, I would recommend having airbags installed. I have the AirLift brand. Their bags are guaranteed for life and they have an accessory kit that comes with a small compressor and a wireless remote. You can preprogram the remote with 2 pressure settings. 1 for everyday travel, and 1 for the maximum lift when you're in a place that you think you might drag. They also come in handy to level the van when you're parked.

    The van build looks like it’s going to be amazing! I feel like I would have a similarly outfitted van (windows all around, bike (and inflatable sup!) storage inside, solar power maxed out etc. So assuming there are any others who feel the same it’s surprising to me that a van like this is not readily available “off the shelf”.

    • @FromShetoMe
      @FromShetoMe  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. I think PW should try out a hybrid between the Rekon and the Ontour. For that kind of money, people expect a few more luxuries but with the capabilities to go off road.
      We used to think that maxing out on solar was a good idea, but I have changed my mind and think it is better to have a smaller array on top but with a solar portal on the van to connect a stand alone panel that can be pointed toward the sun. Especially since the van will have a second alternator.

    Your van plan sounds exciting, and very similar to our plan. We ordered a Transit in Feb. 2021, it finally arrived last month and Embassy Specialty Vehicles are outfitting it. No propane, no black tank, no generator, no wood. The AC is under the couch (with one piece above the axle) and ducted at floor level, so nothing on the roof inside or out. Lithionics batteries, special vented fans in each corner, so no fans in the ceiling. It should be finished by the end of May, and we are over the moon!!
