    One more reason for only filing on the forward stroke is because filing in both directions can reduce the life of your file, this may be less noticeable when working softer metals, but it's still true.

    Since you structured and stamped your piece before you formed it into a ring it will be workhardened and difficult to form. Annealing could help there. Plus, it is not true that you only get a good impression with one heavy blow. It is also possible to use several quick sharp blows in succession AND if your impression is not deep enough the stamp can be replaced and used again. It is just a matter of doing it carefully and with feeling.

    How much was the metal you used?

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a .925 sterling silver flat wire that is about 5mm across. We are only carrying 21ga flat wire at this time, which really is too soft for this project. Online sale searches yielded some good results on finding flat wire. Most seemed to be in the $40 to $50 range for a section. Keep in mind, sterling silver will be more expensive than a coated wire. For this particular project, you will want to use .925 sterling simply because when a wire with coating is hammered or stamped, it can come off revealing the metal underneath, which is usually copper.

      Hi Cortney! This "wrap and tap" plier has three sizes on the barrel, which are 13mm, 16mm and 20mm. JTV, unfortunately is sold out of this plier at the moment, but a quick internet search should yield some affordable results! We really hopes this helps!

    Hi, great video! . Question, is the chasing hammer optional to use? like when making these rings, do you have to use the chasing hammer? Thank you again for this tutorial.

    • @JewelSchool
      @JewelSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nakaya! For this particular project, the chasing hammer is important in order to spread out the ends for the stamping. You can skip the texturing if you want. If you're not going to stamp your ring, then just make sure still you file down those sharp edges. Good luck!
