Hey, this is the video that really helped me to understand how truss rods work, thanks a lot. Question: What happens if I turn the nut of a single action truss rod counterclockwise? Will the square rod loose its tension and become straight again? Will the square rod keep its tension and will I simple "taking out" the nut? Does it depend on the manufacturer? I have a Yamaha RBX375 but I cannot find if it is a single or double action truss rod.

I take of the fretboard and remove the trussrod... I'm so surprised when i know my guitar has came with the single action trussrod... So i dicide to change the rod with dual action rod... But i didn't sure when i start to make this project because i don't know what's the different between the single rod and dual rod...and than i watch this video and i think it's so helpfully... *I'm sorry if my English is not good because i'm came from Indonesian.

Maybe you can help me: I have experience and success with all my other fender guitars with the same neck and rod configuration, except for my 1968 Fender Telecaster, (Phillip’s Head type of adjustment on base of neck, no plug on headstock, no skunk stripe, and I’m the original owner) The neck bows up toward the strings too much, no matter how much I loosen the rod ( I know that’s counter clockwise) it just bows up toward the strings. It happened on its own, after 50 years! The last adjustment was about 15 years ago, it been perfect up till now. Any tips would be appreciated!

@@331b7 Thank you! I'm putting together a partscaster for a customer at the moment and guess what? The truss rod operates BACKWARDS! It's only the 2nd or 3rd such truss rod since I've been working on guitars.. I can't think why they do it? The neck I'm pretty sure is from the Far East and it's cheap(ish)... It's not a major problem so long as it works, one way or another :D
I have a Carvin LB76 Bass Guitar and my guitar tech told me it was the end of the way of the truss rod but I also have read that those basses have double action truss rods and I understood here that their adjustment to relief the action of the strings work the opposite way turning of the nut. Am I right or wrong? Need some help.
Can frequent adjustments cause issues with the neck, because I think the dual action rod in my epi has stopped working, it still turns normally shows increasing resistance as it should, but the relief changes all the time and is not stable. The relief now only seems to affect frets 6-9 instead from frets 3-9. The rod has stopped working in the first few frets near the nut, what’s the problem here?
Jean Pasqualini I sent the guitar off to the shop where I bought it from and had one of their techs look over it and I received it back saying it was ‘repaired’. Still had the same issue. I did hear the rod rattling inside the neck when I strummed all the open strings hard, could it be loose in the channel, how does this happen? Only ha dit six months.

I am curious and I have yet to find an answer on the internet. I have a 1989-90ish Ibanez electric guitar (EX 360 to be exact) which I assume has a single action truss rod. Needless to say, the truss is not reactive. I can only get a reaction out of it if I tighten it completely. (well, to the point where I can't go any further with normal force) In other words, loosening it does not provide any noticeable relief on the neck. I am pretty sure it's broken. With that said, I wonder which section of the rod actually fails or creates this problem? Do the truss rod threads wear out or does the inside channel section of neck that holds the rod in place move or something? Perhaps one day I will take on the task of removing the fretboard and change it out to a double action. Wood is beautiful, but it sure has it's drawbacks lol.
I'm guessing the rod in my Squier jbass is a two way seeing as how it doesn't come out when you loosen it to the max. Kind of sucks because I can't tighten it beyond its limit when I need to in order for the neck to be straight again (it's warped like a banana, concave). I could be facing more than just truss rod issues since the action is also uneven and the warp is only from about the fifth fret to the first. This wasn't the case until about a month after some freezing temperatures took over a week in Feburary. Basically since the first day of spring I have been dealing with a dead sound compared to the brightness it once had when it was new. Even after getting lighter gauge strings, having it setup by guitar techs, and meddling with the saddle heights it still looks and plays blandly. The technicians basically solved half the problem, although I have yet to adjust the truss rod to be certain of that. After all, I did tell them what happened and waited two weeks for results 🤷♂️ but it sounds about as good as it once did just bent like a skateboard ramp.
Maybe I'm a bit jaded, but I don't see the need for a double acting rod. I feel like its a fix for poor wood selection... I've seen back bow over the years, but it's fairly infrequent and I usually see it in cheaply made guitars. with poor grain orientation in the neck wood... That said, it's easy insurance if you are building a guitar... The other thing I don't understand is why the nut comes off the single action rod. If it comes off after the guitar is done, that would be a bad bad thing. I'd think about superglue or loctite to keep it in place. Maybe I'm missing something???
hi can you help me regarding my acoustic guitar trussrod. it has a single way one and it is overly concave. whenever i tried to adjust for a relief, the nut always comes out. i can't bring it back atleast to straight level.
Great presentation!!! I have only one question. Is the nut or the spoke wheel nut replaceable on a double action truss rod? As I see is not and will need a full replacement if something goes wrong.
Thankyou SO MUCH!!! I have a Jackson JS22-7 with back-bow on the neck, and have the truss rod fully loosened and it still hase back-bow. I didn't know it has a dual-action truss rod! I will be trying this out today after work to see if I can fix the back-bow. I am so excited! It is a restoration project guitar. Excellent video and camera work. I have a couple of guitars but didn't even know that a truss rod consisted of two rods - my mental "picture" included a bizarre curved path for the rod... I'm actually looking for a way to keep _bookshelves_ from bowing. Truss rods don't seem economically feasible for that, but at least my grasp of how they work is greatly improved. Thank you!
h fsii - funny I always thought that the channel for the truss rod was curved as well and that there was a single rod, not round and square as shown here.
The one that he unscrews,is the same trust rod that Ibanez use. Except the nut it's not a piece of metal like that. It's a thin piece of aluminum that they put a chrome shell over. It will break really easy. I suggest replacing immediately. I had an Ibanez with a bad neck. They replace it for free but. Trying to adjust the neck the nut ripped in half, because it was aluminum. I couldn't believe it. It look like a piece of tool steel, but it was just chrome over pot metal that is paper thin!
Can i/could i route the neck channel so that access to the alan head is gained from the bridge end of the neck rather than the headstock end? And if not, why not?
