    As of 2023/09/12 Hotfix 11: Achilles no longer has the base 10 damage on hit. Its step damage is 1 by default. Its step damage scales bonus damage by 50%. And Axe Specialist is no longer +5 Additional Physical, but instead 10% Power Bonus. In return, the movespeed penalty is harsher.

      @@GrimmReaperRL Yes, you can deal decimal damage in this game. So really, the 1 damage per step is something like 1.1, if you've got some power bonus to work with.

    I feel like this was the most under-appreciated new aspect of playtest 5. I saw many people walk themselves to death without ever realizing what was happening to them; and, as someone who plays squishy classes I appreciate you not releasing this video until now. 🙃

      I can confirm that Barbs were way too broken with the perks this patch.. I got one shot by blue Francisca axe with achilles strike on the head. The fact all of Barb perks also apply to Francisca axes is wild.. Might as well play a Barb using throwing axes instead of a Ranger 😂

    I liked to use an Achilles Strike Throwing Torch as my off-hand weapon with a horseman's axe. I think it received the benefits of Axe Specialization, since my main-hand was an axe.
    Yes. Effects like Achilles Strike and Rupture can be applied to zero-damage thrown items.

    I presented the debuff as lasting 2 seconds, but in reality it lasts 3 seconds. The original version of this ability was 40% slowdown for 2 seconds. All footage used in this video was from after this change, and so the footage is accurate in terms of the ability's effectiveness throughout most of the playtest.

    It got changed to 3 sec duration, and reduced slow. I one shot so many rogues jumping over the place by hitting this on a thrown.

      It also says dmg per "each instance of movement" so it may count jumps and double jumps as well as steps as "instances".

    I would say it needs to be fixed and then we nerfed. As you described snd as anyone who played the game can attest it was clearly working beyond intent the same way as the cleric spells, and in a similar way as people complained about zap/fireball scaling where it double dips damage.

    At one point, my friend and I found a dead body stuck diagonally through a door, with the head and left torso jutting out onto our side. We walked up to it and started to loot it, when a barbarian walked right through the (closed) door and oneshot me with Achilles Strike. When I spectated him, I saw that this guy was doing the same thing all over the map: he had some way to trigger the bug. On his screen, the door was broken or simply didn't exist, but on everyone else's screen, the door would still be there, and he could see them through it and come 1shot them.

      There was a bug throughout the test where breakable objects wouldn't play their breaking animation for players and appear to be there, but still allow players to walk through. This happened with pots, barrels, and planks, but I've never seen it with doors. Wouldn't surprise me though.

    Achilles strike was -40% move speed for 2 seconds this was changed with hotfix1 to -10% move speed for 3 seconds.

      I got the 10% part in the video, but I don't think I got the 3 second part. Regardless, it just makes the skill more lethal than if it were 2 seconds. 1 more second of duration means 1 more second for players to take steps (and damage), and as I understand it, faster movement speed means that your steps are faster (meaning more damage from Achilles). That change certainly nerfed the slowdown, but it buffed the lethality.

    I think the skill should do maybe true damage for the dot but does not benefit from bonuses. Now this makes me say even more when will barbs get bale arm, which allows them to dual wield throwing weapons.

    Great video! Probably not possible now but could you do a test for Rogues and will stat - I noticed there was an interesting interaction with poison.

      Depends on what that interaction is! I know that poison is technically Magic damage, and Will affects Magic Power Bonus (so with enough Will, poison will start to do more damage).

      It seems they've added a new scaling mechanic and applied it to certain skills and spells, Achilles included. What it does is scale down all damage bonuses by x amount, in Achilles' case it's by 50% (specifically on the steps).
      So instead of ((Base Damage + 5)*1.15)+5 per step, as shown with Axe Specialist and Divine Strike, it'd be ((Base Damage + 2.5)*1.075)+2.5, which equals 10.5625. I'll be double-checking this via testing soon, but as far as we know so far, this is how it works.

Achilles is still good, because it's still +10 damage, good slowdown, and 5 damage each step they take, it's just that Additional is half as effective as it used to be. I'm not sure if I'd still consider it stupidly powerful, but it's still good.

    I killed an epic longsword fighter with starter level 1 barb because of this nutso ability. My two axes and Achilles didn't bring him down but he was panicking and spamming so it was an easy starter battle-axe finish

    Does this damage/step apply to earthquake too? Don't think the cleric really has many tools to take advantage of that if so, but maybe with the right gear could be deadly.

      Well, it was kind of bad. But funny sometimes. 90% of the time I tried to use it the cast time was too long and I had to cancel. Managed to stop a barb from pushing me with it once, and the one time I killed someone it was a naked desperately trying to steal my portal.

      @@Acsion42 Oh no, Earthquake was busted as fuck in a party. Slow down an entire team push to a crawl or a standstill while your teammates just crossbow the nerds to death.
      I'm honestly surprised more people haven't been complaining about earthquake; unlike Locust Swarm, you literally can't escape.

      @@marksmanmax1158 Earthquake plus an archer was incredibly good. I also think that the movement speed penalty was bugged and it made it way stronger.
      It was only supposed to reduce movement by 50%, but I got hit by earthquake while wearing plate armour and I was literally locked in place and couldn't move at all. If I tried to move it would keep stacking 10 damage but I wouldn't move an inch. So that was a fun way to slowly get arrowed to death.

      @@lupusjoe Well, the damage dealt by earthquake might also slow you down. I know some spells slow you down when they hit you, including Lightning Strike, so Earthquake might count for that.
      Don't underestimate how bad a 50% slow actually is in D&D, however.

    you don't need to actually "hit the ankle" to trigger the affect
    (Head get hit)

    I wish I had tested this, but maybe you did. Does Reckless Attack and Achilles Strike stack?
    As more and more clerics/fighters were gearing into phys red., I was going to drop Rage for Reckless Attack. I think it would be okay if it only applied to the francesca hit - the tooltip leans towards this being the case, but never know unless you try!

      I did happen to test this, actually. Reckless Attack only applies to the initial weapon attack, not to any of the Achilles stacks.

      It affects any instance of Physical Damage, including actual weapon damage and fist damage. It just won't get multiplied by Power Bonus, making it less useful if you have high Power Bonus.

    i achilles strike was changed to 3 seconds in hotfix 1. so unless that change was reverted (if it was, it wasn't stated in the announcements channel), achilles strike is dealing even more, potential, damage than stated in this video
    also, are you absolutely sure additional phys damage does not benefit from phys power bonus? cause that would be weird wording considering additional magic damage *is* affected by magic power bonus. also, physical power bonus was tested and shown to interact with additional physical damage in playtest 3. if it has been nerfed since then to not interact with physical power bonus, do you have any testing recorded to show this?

    Rogue with a double jump and one-handed crossbow that the rapture and poison works for are, also not a joke. If the game doesn't shift more towards dungeon crawling, don't change the premanent progression to temporary (leveling and perks are reset when leaving the dungeon, only gear remains). And if it remains more of a pvp battle royale with all sorts of cheeses, it will quickly become a toxic dump without an influx of new players.

    I mean, it does take a skill slot. So you're not closing with rage or losing a lot of pvp utility. And I think putting an opponent in a no-win scenario is ok for using a skill. Fireball also puts enemies in a no win scenario, a lot of skills don't have downsides. If you're using it with a franceska where it's most effective, you have a higher chance to miss, and if you use it in melee...you're already a barb in melee, you're probably fine. Yes, stacked to oblivion, it seems like a lot of damage, but they can already 1 shot when they can stack stats, so I don't see it as too much of a problem.

    Barbarian didn't have any sense last playtest. I get that the goal of the playtest was never to balance the classes, but dude, bullshit like this gets thrown out there to a class that can already one shot you with starting gear. Barbarian needs to be nerfed hard.
    -> Highest health in the game: 30% more than the second most healthy class. And thanks to that huge pool of health, they get the most out of the new resting mechanic.
    -> Highest one-shot potential: Can one-shot the low-health classes with starting gear head-on. And two-shot the more "tankier" ones. All this without needing to ambush or mind-game them.
    -> Low skill ceiling: Landing an axe to the head with the current animation of the default axe is extremely easy. Literally point and click. And he doesn't need to think too much about positioning.
    -> Extremely good perks: It has one that gives him 13 more health with starting gear, and another one that gives him 100 more Magic Resistance with starting gear. Meanwhile, the other tank class like the Fighter has one that gives him 2 armor with starting gear. Laughable.
    -> Extremely good skills: Rage is the best Melee skill of the game, period. Giving them +15 Strength and +15% speed for 6 seconds. And they have it each 28 seconds. Meanwhile, the Fighter gets Adrenaline rush. A skill who is not only worse than Rage, but it also debuffs you after you use it. And in the previous playtest you could only use it one time for the WHOLE GAME.
    -> Best Stat distribution: Strength is the only needed stat for a melee class. He starts with 30. It gives him Damage and Health. All the other stats aren't worth it in comparison, even if you x2 or x3 them. Think about it. As a melee what you prefer +1 STR or +2 Will?, +1 STR or +3 Knowledge? The only other good stat is AGI, but it isn't worth half as much.
    -> No actual counterplay: The only "real" counterplay is to flee when you see one. Or pray to God that he is so bad that cannot land a single axe to your head. Let me give you an example: The rogue's whole shtick is to ambush people. You ambush them successfully you win, you fail to ambush, they wreck you. Except the Barbarian. You can literally ambush them and stab them 3 or 4 times on the back of the head before they just turn around and one-shot you with a left-click. With starting gear, you need to stab them 10-15 times to down them. Actual insanity.
    -> No real weakness: The only two weakness he supposedly has are: "Low speed" and "Limited ranged options". But that's just not true. Let me tell you why:
    -------> "Low Move Speed": Pop rage, now you're not only stronger but also faster than them. And optionally pop Achilles Strike, so they cannot move for 3 seconds or they take insane damage.
    -------> "Low Interaction Speed": Equip the perk Crush. Now you instantly open most doors and containers. Even faster than the Rogue. And counter shield carrying classes as a bonus.
    -------> "Limited Range": Almost all combats happen in small/medium sized rooms and corridors. So no range weaponry needed in most cases. But just in case, they start with 3 Francisca's Axes. The best Throwable in the game. They do great damage, apply slow, apply the +5 DMG of Axe Spec and the +10% of Executioner. And now the can also apply Achilles Strike, unbelievable.
    Conclusion: Barbarian is by far the most OP class since the start. People complained about the Wizard in the other playtest, even tho he required x10 the skill to be played as strongly as any barbarian does. And they still nerfed him into oblivion. And if you still think that Barbarian is okay, just search on youtube "Barbarian plays compilation" and compare it to any other "X class plays compilation". You will find sooner rather than later that the barbarian plays are literally brain-dead left click in comparison to any other of the classes mind-games or mechanics.

      I don't know how hot of a take it is, but I agree with you on a lot of this. Barbarian seems like the kind of class that should be balanced by low mobility, but their Agility isn't all that low (most of their "poor movement" comes from 2-Handed weapons being slow, not the class itself, and they're not nearly as slow as Cleric or Fighter using plate), they tend to go shirtless (which saves a LOT of move speed), they're the only class to start with boots, and Rage completely throws that potential weakness out of the window by basically being Sprint with a damage buff attached. Their poor interact speed becomes the best in the game with Smash/Crush, and their perk selection gives some pretty wild bonuses (like the free 100 MR from Iron Will, as you mentioned).
      Their only truly awful stat is Knowledge, which currently has no drawbacks for non-casters, and even if/when they do implement item identification speed, that won't be relevant to their strength in PvP engagements. At the moment it seems that Barbarian has few, if any weaknesses to speak of. I'm not sure how that should be addressed (my intuition tells me that Rage shouldn't be a speed buff). Regardless, it definitely seems like an issue, and I'm anticipating how Barbarian will look in the next set of stats.

    Achilles was good but not op imo.
    This past test was even more movement heavy than the previous tests. Every class was coming out the gates swinging with alot of strong abilities. I personally preferred Achilles with the original -40% movement and 2 second duration. The slowdown was much more helpful in matchups.
    I don't see the skill getting nerfed, since they basically retuned the class overall not to be weaker but to be more reliant on actually landing skill shots and headshots. And Achilles is a skill shot that you have to actually land for it to do anything, if you through a fransisca and it misses thats it, it goes on cooldown if you hit something. That includes the ground, walls, shields whatever with whatever.

      They didn't retune the class at all. They got a numbers adjustment on one perk, a movement speed debuff nerf on one multi-class throwable, and a movement speed nerf on one multi-class weapon. Everything that was strong about Barb in the past is still strong, and the addition of Executioner doesn't "encourage skill shots" as much as it rewards them even more for things they were already doing effectively. Same goes for Franciscas and Achilles. You already were trying to hit Franciscas and land headshots, and those things just got stronger.
      The only class that received any relevant movement ability was Rogue with Double Jump, so I'm not sure where you're coming from in regards to the test being "movement heavy". Landing a single hit with Barb is just as easy as it used to be (except maybe against Rogue), but Achilles makes that hit way more damaging than it used to be.

      @@clowdk They essentially reduced flat damage on axes with axe mastery and made executioner to reward headshots instead of just swinging. Franscisas got a flat nerf to movement penatly which was essentially moved to a skill shot achilles which can add the extra slow but needs to land. They readjusted them to require skill shots and headshots more than just flat out damage. Imo axe mastery was really the only thing that needed to be reduced a bit. But I don't mind the readjustment.
      The class didn't need nerfs and this is just fine. Rewards better players. As I said, personally I'd rather the higher slow than longer duration on achilles.
      Barb was never singlehandedly op I really don't get where this idea came from. Everyone thought the class was weak up until buff ball meta playtest 4 and that was bc of buffs. All the classes are strong in their own right.
      The only issue I still see is that some classes are a bit slower to get the ball rolling on a fresh start.

      @@saint_snow There are many reasons to consider Barbarian overpowered. I realize people thought they were weak until a certain point, but that's just how meta develops. Not every powerful option is immediately obvious, especially in a fledgling community.
      My (current) personal analysis of Barbarian is that they have no relevant weaknesses to counteract their strengths. The most obvious weakness to give them is poor mobility, but their perks and skills cover that hole very easily. If Rage didn't boost movement speed, I'd say Barbarian has a weakness. But Rage is effectively a better Sprint, on a class that has less slowdown to compensate for compared to Fighter.
      I'm certainly open to changing my mind, if evidence convinces me. I used to be a Barbarian main in Playtest 3 who thought the class was utter garbage, and now I think they're potentially problematic, now that I've done a lot more research and gotten much better at the game.

      @@clowdk I play literally every class and main barb every playtest. Barbs can be easily killed by rogues, rangers and wizards.
      Rage is not a better sprint, you have a pretty significant defence debuff during it. and you only get 15% movement speed increase, the only thing significant really is the 15 strength. Fighters get 50 movment speed increase and no debuff. Both have the same cooldown.
      Any barb using rage to gap close a distance is an easy kill to a ranged class. Barbs do have poor mobility. The whole concept of the class is to be high single taget dps while being slow. They have high health to help with this. Their one range option got nerfed with axe mastery and the falst movement nerf to the weapon itself last test and achilles was added to help out a bit specifically for them. Its a skill shot, if you miss then thats that and a cleric can just cleans it.

      @@saint_snow Do you know the difference between +50 Move Speed and 15% Movement Speed increase? Because you seem to think that the 15% increase is bad in comparison.
      Maybe I'll have to elaborate more on this in a future video, but I don't know if it's understood just how strong Rage is, and what it does for a class that SHOULD be balanced by poor mobility.

    Yeah this last playtest was a fiasco anyways. Rogues becoming broken, clerics becoming broken, barbs becoming broken. Rogues were spending more time in the air floating to their destination then walking to it (not to mention they can just hide and pot up now insanely broken). Clerics were oneshotting in 0.1 seconds. Barbs only counter running away was nullified thanks to this perk. Complete fiasco, i really thought the devs were special and knew what they were doing but i dont know anymore... this was just stupid.

      Regular reminder that they've stated many times that their priority is not balance. They want to implement new things and ensure the game works. Balance in an unfinished product is more or less irrelevant, aside from things that are blatantly game-breaking. It's not really fair to criticize them for experimenting when we ARE the playtesters.
      Don't give up on them just because they're implementing new things and trying to establish the game's foundation. Not everything has to be about balance, especially this early in development.

    I don't think the dev team knows what direction they want to take barbarian at this stage in development, their entire kit is contradictions where they supposedly are supposed to have weaknesses usually attributed with being a high HP tank (e.g. low speed/low damage) but every single ability they get is counterintuitive to that, in such a way that they not only get ways to become faster than other classes despite being tankier (Rage) but also dealing more damage than the other classes (Achilles Strike).
    If they want to make the barbarian a fair fight in any sense of the word, they either need to be easier to avoid encounters with, or actually make it feasible for another equally skilled player to take more than a single hit from them without risk of being one shot.

      @@ChaseMusicProvider I'm speaking generally in terms of give and take balancing, It's not that they *should* be a low damage tank, its just one of the roles they could fill.
      My point is that they don't fill *any* role as a class because they fill *every* role. They can do ranged damage with their default Francisca axes, they can catch up to you with rage or just pure slowdown with one of many abilities, they can one shot you by stacking with Axe Specialist, they can survive longer than any other class, and hell they can even do burst sneak attack damage just by downing a single invis potion. They fill the supposed roles of almost every other class except the explicitly support focused ones. Barbarian has no identity other than just being the best at everything combat related, which makes them not only overpowered, but also bland.

    Christ the devs don't care about balance at all. I understand wanted to work on adding more content first but they don't understand that shit like this is making the game unfun...

      To be fair, balance is pretty low priority compared to adding unimplemented functionality and ensuring the game runs at all. They've said it's not their priority, and I can understand why. But it's all anyone talks about, and they still make some balance changes between/during playtests. I can't help but make balance-related content too, but only in cases where things are extremely over- or under-tuned.

      @@jimbotron8552 I think the devs so far have been very humble and open to feedback. Most of the things I'd call "questionable changes" are newly added features rather than rebalances to existing things, and I'm sure those outstanding new features will be adjusted according to feedback, based on their work so far.
