    At the time of the Wii I worked for a private ambulance company, meaning I went to A LOT of nursing homes. I found that just about all of them had a Wii set up in the community room by 2008. Working nights, I didn’t see them get much use, but I imagine during the day it would be used for time with family or even home tournaments.

    I was 12 when the Wii came out, but I didn't get one until I was 13. My siblings and I payed the hell out of Wii Sports. Even my mom found it hysterical the way the little characters comically bounced across the screen. Also we had the habit of making the most ridiculous looking miis possible and that made it even funnier.

  • @wesleyem3
    @wesleyem3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +80

    For me, it was the simplicity of it all. It wasn't a bustling city, the characters were all your creation, and the atmosphere is so simple. A lot of the games locations remind me of a liminal space.

    • @FTChomp9980

    Wish more consoles had pack-in games, especially ones that utilise the console's main features or selling points. It's a great intro to the console and it's something everyone will have, so as Zion said there will be more conversations and word of mouth. It also means everyone has a base game to start with and in common with each other to get better at, share, co-op and compete in etc.

    • @jonathanwilson7949

      1-2 Switch Sports was kind of that but from what I’ve heard it didn’t really keep players around for very long. I don’t have a PS5 but Astro’s Playroom seems to be a better example of a pack in title doing a better job of showing the console’s abilities in the current gen.

    I was 5 when the Wii came out and I literally don't know anyone my age that didn't have one. I'm now 20 and in my university house we have a wii and regularly have rounds of golf and bowling still because it's something we all know and enjoy. yesterday I screamed because I got two chip-ins in golf. There is just a generation to us where the wii and wii sports is a staple! My wii is so used that after 15 years of use it crashes after 3 or 4 hours of use... and that is a console that's been loved and survived hehe

    I love that y'all mention the low barrier to entry introduced with the Wii. The Wii was my first home console, I found controllers such as the PlayStation controller really intimidating when I was a kid because there was so many buttons. The Wii just felt so approachable and helped me get comfortable with using a controller and even though nowadays I think the PlayStation controller is probably the best controller on the market, I have to thank the goofy Wii remote for helping me get there

    I agree with the points of timing and accessibility. Pre wifi gaming wasn't popular yet, and with couch coop still being popular it's straight forward on how popular the game could be when it comes with the system, are sports games almost everyone knows, and give a new but easy experience to gamers and non gamers.
    I have good memories of family gatherings playing Wii Sports.

    What made it iconic for me was the fact it was backwards compatible cause my gamecube died a year before we got one. still to this day I see it pretty much as a "Gamecube 2.0" that has cool motion controls, a cool menu you can have apps on, and it plays extra games than a gamecube

    My first experience with the Wii was playing it at my cousin‘s house. I was around five at the time and I remember they have lost their nunchuck so we couldn’t play boxing. That Christmas I asked my parents if they could get me a Wii so I can play Wii sports, and they got me the one that was packed in with Wii sports and resort on the same disk. Soon after, I got a Wii U because I got the OG wii very late in the lifecycle of the console, and then I really started to get into gaming.

    We had the EyeToy and ended up disappointed by the gimmick largely because EyeToy Play, and the EyeToy Groove games were pretty lame. We always wanted Anti-grav and Kinetix but could never find them.
    So the Wii coming along and showing off Wii Sports looked like more of the same. But my mom thought the Wii would be good for us and got us a Wii instead of a PS3. And we thought of it very similarly to the EyeToy with Wii Sports to be honest. My memories with both are actually really good, but Wii Sports did have better games and more than anything, everyone knew about it. If it wasn't a pack-in game we definitely never would have played it.
