I get why, at this point Jackson wanted the audience to feel the desperation and hopelessness of their plight. But it really does just make them look like bad warriors. Something I would never say to the face of an axeman from Lossarnach as portrayed by the books.

There are actually several scenes throughout the battle where the soldiers of Gondor wreck some ass. When the gates break and the Orcs charge, they kill one of the armored trolls. These fuckers would kill them, book or movie. When the rest of the Orcs flood in, you can actually see one of the Gondor pikemen going all in, spearing an orc to the ground like a boss. During the street fighting, you can find disarmed soldiers beating the snot out of armed orcs.

In the books when Gondor sounds the retreat from Osgiliath to Minas Tirith the Fields of Pelennor are actually surrounded by a wall which was built by order from Denethor since he knew a little of what was coming thanks to his Palantir. Thing is the garrison at the gates of this wall was kinda small but still managed to put up a good fight not as shownn in the movies where they're of course for action sake are slaughtered like cattle). Faramir and his men therefor have to fall back again and the knights of Minas Tirith and Dol Amroth sally out led by prince Imrahil and Gandalf to cover their retreat. They crushed the ,,small" vanguard of orcs from Minas Morgul and therefor Faramir and his men to retreat back into the city. When the city was under siege by two armies (The one from Minas Morgul which attacked Osgiliath and another one from the Black Gate) The Rohirrim used a gap in the Pelennor wall which was made by the Black Gate army to enter the fields to get into their back. They charged and were met by the easterling (Rhunic and Variag) and southron (Haradrim) cavalry. Not being able to withstand such onslaught the gondorian cavalry sallied out. It was in this battle where king Theoden slew the Black Serpent the haradrim king himself. Afterwards Snowmane the kings horse was hit by a stray arrow and he fell with it, his lower body crushed under it's weight. Also to mention: the army of the dead was not used as shown in the movies. They were used to capture the corsair fleet and a detachement of soldiers led by Angbar (If I remember the name correctly) sailed with the three hunters. They just arrived in time to help their allies and thus the siege was lifted and all of Gondors forces sallied out to drive off the enemy. ( Sorry for the long text and the bad english xD)
Sad my favorite moment of that whole battle wasn't shown on screen. Eomer seeing the corsairs coming, believing it to be enemy reinforcements heralding his doom. He plants the standard of the Rohirrim and draws his sword, rallying any around to his side. "TO DEATH! TO DEATH!" He screams, suddenly finding himself laughing at his doom, like a madman. Then the lead ship unfurls the banner of elendil and Eomer realizes he may just yet live to see another day.
I have never seen or heard of this game. Its amazing. Real tactics? The game actually being built to do that? A bunch of players as commander teaming up in armies? This is the greatest thing ever
You can actually play the fellowship. The unit mix and heroes from the book. Amazing mod. Only issue is there no replenishment for units so you need to collapses units to refill tanks. Except heroes bodyguards refill.
The way the cavalry makes their way out of the gate it’s like what happened last time when they charge out to try retake their city but failed in the third movie.

I hope next time you do one of these you make it more loreful, I think the forces present at Minas Tirith is Mordor, Harad, Rhun, Khand and the Corsairs. You can have Mordor as the primary force but the human factions are smaller yet are the real meat of the attack, as they have the most elite forces yet they don’t have as many units as the Mordor players. Still a cool battle
In the Books, the Oathbrakers never went near Minas Tirith, they followed Aragorn south and drove away the allies of Sauron from the port of Pelargir, after which Aragorn set them free. Aragorn then took his troops, yes he had other troops with him besides the Oathbreakers called the Grey Company, and maned the ships left by the allies of Sauron and sailed to Minas Tirith. The movies just skipped all that as it would have most likely confused an audience that didn't know the stories.
Great fight! Do love the epic army sizes, but I think it might be slightly better entertainment value if the battle were a tiny bit smaller (less lag and a slightly more realistic fight, rather than just zillions of troops crammed into one space 😂)
