    I love using this pen for drawing and now own two of them. They need slim converters to fit into the barrel. The Faber-Castell Ambition converter is ideal as is the thin Schmidt (I believe it's the K2). Your description of the nib attributes was excellent. Thanks Stephen.

    The muji pen is what I used to get away from Rotring technical pens. The seal is tight. I can use pigment sketch ink from Roher Klinger without issue.
    The older versions wouldn’t allow you to remove the nib. The new ones do.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me, the Pilot Kakuno was the first pen that made me think I could put down technical pens (not that there’s anything wrong with them of course). I have way more fun with my fountain pens now.
      If you like waterproof inks, I highly recommend the De Atramentis Document ink line, and Platinum’s Carbon Black. Great in fountain pens. I’ve never had a clog.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelcorleone89 I have had this one for a few years now, and I received it used. I’m not sure if it’s the most recent model that the nib cannot be removed, or if that model is even older than the one that I have. That’s a bummer if they are really producing two types that look similar. I really like this one, but I guess I can’t say with confidence what you will end up with if you ordered one for yourself.

    Your channel has inspired me to get back to drawing especially because for whatever reason, it never occurred to me to use fountain pens to draw!
    I own a few fountain pens since getting into the hobby about a year ago and out of my collection my absolute favorite has been my Elite 95s in medium. I did my own custom grind on it and it has ruined all of my other pens. The glassy smooth nib along with its bounciness and pocketability has me coming back to it time and time again. The muji is now on my radar as a workhorse pen for writing and drawing with a permanent ink inside!

    Such a great pen! It's been an almost constant companion for almost 3 years now the body shape and the posting is so satisfying. I didn't realise it was a friction fit nib as I had thought (and another commenter has pointed out that this is true for older versions) that the nib couldn't be swapped. The nib is a Schmidt FH202 or something (don't quote me on that) but I think it should fit other #5 nibs too. I know Benu, Ystudio and Ohto all use Schmidt nibs if you like this one. I have an ohto tasche that has an equally quirky nib, but isn't as springy. But now that I have learned that it's removable I am about to test a #5 stub I have. :-O

      I agree on both points. It’s fun to use, and it compares very favorably to the Black Forest. I feel like the only real difference is the weight. Sometimes I prefer one over the other, sometimes the opposite.

    My Muji arrived with no converter, and, although I could have added one from the parts box, for whatever reason I decided to put in an International Short with a spare right behind it.
    Nice pen, good review, I only wish it was available in black, but I've never seen a black one. I generally prefer black pens, but I do have a couple of silver fountain pens when there is no other choice.

    One thing I like about this pen is that the cap only covers the nib and not the grip, meaning that I can check the ink level by unscrewing the barrel only, leaving the cap in place.
    For inking, I syringe fill and refill a spare Pelikan Standard International long cartridge. Holds plenty of ink in one go.

      I think with any pen in the under 20USD range, there are inevitably going to be some individual units that don’t perform as well as others. That being said, the truly aggravating thing about that is that I have found that more expensive pens tend to have about the same rate of reliability from unit to unit. Like you said, that’s true of any pen.
      My guess is that if you’re used to spending 100USD+ on a pen, you’re not going to like the Muji. However, if you (like me) buy a lot of pens in the 10-30USD range, you’re probably going to appreciate this one. Though of course, individual tastes vary greatly.

      @@stepheninks I think my greatest fear was that it was a QC issue that is similar to other unnamed companies. That, and I probably shouldn't always trust Amazon reviews for fountain pens since the majority of people probably didn't have experience with a fountain pen before.

    Hi Stephen!
    I've been waiting for this review! Awesome review and cute drawing!
    I purchased one after you ranked it as your favorite pen. :) I like mine but it seems like it produces a much thicker line than yours. I can't seem to get much line variation. I just used the default ink cartridge that came with the pen so it could be the ink. It does pretty well with reverse writing though. I love the minimalist look too. Overall good purchase. Smooth and no skipping is always a win for me!

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wonder if line weight has anything to do with how light the pen touches the paper? I have a very light touch, and sometimes I draw faster to lessen how much ink gets on the page. This pen is so responsive, I’m sure individual results might vary more than a stiffer nib. But anyway, I’m glad you enjoy it. I’m loving mine too!

    I have a Muji, and I have a bit of trouble getting it to make as fine a line as you are getting. I might need to tune it. I don't have much experience doing so. Love the form factor. Next pen I get is going to be the Penbbs 456 because I really like how you presented it in your top 10.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you’ll like that 456! The nib is less flexible than the Muji, so you should get more consistent lines. Don’t forget to open the back of the blind cap when drawing with vac fillers (like the 456). This keeps the feed from drying up.

    I need to get my Muji pen tuned a little bit/learn how to tune my own dang nibs! I love the bounciness and the minimalist design but mine is, infact, a wee little bit scratchy. Also love the perfect "slot"(?) For the cap to post, unless you drop it or something and bend it 😬

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, if a more expensive pen needed tuning, I might hire a professional, but anything under 30USD, I just do it myself, and accept the results. A nice set of micro mesh would be all you really need for the scratchiness. I used some on a video on this channel to tune my Platinum Preppy. I’m not an expert, but I’m really happy with the results. Check it out if you need some inspiration!

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The first time is the hardest. You just have to hold firmly and pull straight. For a friction fit nib like this one, they start off pretty snug in there. More so if you have some ink in the feed, because you get some sticking and surface tension.

    • @stepheninks
      @stepheninks  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry it doesn’t work for you. This pen remains one f my favorites, but there are definitely pens that make thinnner lines. The Pilot Kakuno or Platinum preppy are two that come to mind right away. Both have a pretty decent reverse writing line that’s thinner than the forward writing. This particular nib has a bit of a bounce to it, which allows for different line weights when forward writing. The Faber Castell nibs on the Loom and Grip also have this quality.

    My pencil-loving hand likes flush-posting, slender, cylindrical, metal pens. Muji fulfills these specs with flying colors. And inexpensive.
    I don't use it much anymore only because I have since found 3 other pens that are functionally identical that I prefer:
    1.TiLiner Aluminum (cheap in Aluminum, much more in Brass or Titanium)
    2. Faber-Castell Neo Slim (uncheap, but ok)
    3. Lamy CP1 (uncheap, but ok).
    Sometimes the CP1 is my favorite drawing pen. Right now my favorite is the Guider Desk Pen (reasonable), for its comfort, followed closely by the Sailor F-9 Desk Pen (NOS, poor value for craftsmanship, best of 75 nibs), for its nib.

I talked about the Indigraph pen which is si,ilar to the Muji but allows you to use india ink. As an artist myself I would easily gravitate to the indigraph between the two and I own both. The nib in my opinion is better than the muji pen too.

      I don’t see any comment I need to approve anywhere. But I am familiar with the Indigraph. It’s on my back burner, but I might get one in the coming year. I find myself not to excited about it, to be honest. Don’t know, it might be great, but I just don’t feel the “need” for India ink in a fountain pen, since there are waterproof options that are okay for fountain pens. Just the concept of putting India ink on a fountain pen makes me nervous! But who knows, maybe I’ll love it?

    • @franckalcidi599
      @franckalcidi599 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stepheninks It's specifically designed to take india ink so no harm will come to the fountain pen. I've had mine for quite a while now and its my favourite drawing fountain pen now. I love the Muji so don't get me wrong and still use it occasionally. But given I do professional art using ink I either use a quill or the Indigraph or alternatively use my drawing monitor which I also have and love using. India ink is generally what most comic or manga artist use because of it's extremely fast drying capabilities and it's much more waterproof then any other fountain pen ink that claim to be waterproof. I admit it's not a cheap pen but if you do get the chance even to try one I think you'll be very very surprised as the Muji and Indigraph in terms of ergonomics are very similar. I love both pens so don't get me wrong and if you are satisfied with the Muji then of course keep using it (I still use mine occasionally) but if you get the chance definitely try out the indigraph.
