Here is the follow up video where I discuss and demonstrate how to scratch into the surface: th-cam.com/video/nzv8NT5HfaE/w-d-xo.html

In recent years I have found it quite difficult to find a source that sells this type of traditional petroleum based hard ground. I have looked into the newer acrylic grounds and they come with a whole new set of problems and are surely not as useful. Up until now I have always considered black liquid hard ground to be a regularly available and reliable material. But now it seems that most art suppliers either do not carry it at all, or are "out of stock".

Yes, I have had that problem too! I was gifted a whole bunch from a college program that was discontinuing it’s use. Asphaltum used for lithography (try Takach press) can be thinned with benzene, napthol or mineral spirits and used as a hard ground too. The addition of wax or petroleum jelly will make a softer ground that won’t completely harden if you like that idea too.

@@danaharrisseeger Yes I have planned to make my own. The silly thing about this whole "go green" movement is, like in almost every other case, we get more inconvenience and much worse results, and are all supposed to buy into all the warnings about traditional materials being unhealthy. I don't buy that for a minute. I knew even before researching it that acrylic acid resist is a pathetic and poor substitute.
