  • The fuhvuhvuhvuh (fuh-vuh-vuh-vuh) is a sound I've given to a bizarre trombone extended technique that makes a demented helicopter-ish sound by vibrating the lower lip against the tips of the top teeth. No flutter tongues where harmed in the making of this technique.

    I've heard Wycliffe Gordan make this sound before. I'm glad that there's finally a video explaining it!

    Fantastic video! Kind of best I have ever come upon purely "who knows how" style surfing. Really great.

    Great video! Im a composer, and this was super helpful. It is okay if I use your videos as reference in my performance notes page in my score? Thanks.

      @@sylvialimcomposer Yep, go ahead. I'd love to hear your score when it's performed too.

      @@sylvialimcomposer Wow that's outstanding! Nice work! The subtleties between the strings and trombone blend well together. A few times, I couldn't tell if some sounds were from the strings or trombone until something else very trombone-ish came in and cleared it up. Props to the trombone player too. This kind of delicacy and restraint is hard for us, especially in the classical world where a lot of people's image of low brass is Wagner! If you're looking for more weird sounds and extended techniques for composition ideas, Emanem records (emanemdisc.com) has been documenting free improvisation since the 70s. Maybe you're aware of them already. Anyway, I had a few more videos of extended techniques I wanted to make, so this has reminded me to get going on them.

    Hiya this is amazing and I'd love to use it in one of my pieces - just wondering, I take it this needs to go at a certain speed. You can't do that slowly, right?

    • @QuietHorn
      @QuietHorn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can control the speed somewhat, but yeah, it generally has to go pretty fast to sustain.
