All I could think of is 18 to 20 year old young men in 1943 standing in cold rain and mud doing that because their life depended upon it. It does put the experience in focus and I am glad we can have these experiences now to learn from and honor what went before.

    • @Sofilein

Yep, it's fun to do on an event weekend but to put hands on history like this provides tremendous perspective and respect to the ones who did it for real. My thoughts are with those for whom this task was far more serious. I'm thankful to the people who keep these vehicles alive, for the ones who no longer are.
The event is a technical one, no re-enacting or historical dress up, and the museum is on battleground. It's a very moving experience.

I've read that the Stug was actually very popular with the troops. Whenever a couple Stugs would show up for a front, the morale of the infantry would go up right away.

@@temper44 They were very efficient killers. A decent gun capable of taking on most enemy (allied) tanks, and a very low profile, making them easy to hide and damn difficult to spot. Also quite lightweight, so not too hard on the softer ground, they didnt get bogged down as much. Well liked by the crews from what I understand

And everyone who had previously raised the hand, had to fall down for 30 pushups, "to warm up". Strangely after that nobody ever "felt cold" when he asked.😉 So in earlier times one of his ancestors might have asked: "Are you cold?" yes "then go, start the StuG (/Panzer)"...

    Ausgezeichnet :)
Fun StuG story: Back in 1999, in the middle of me doing WWII reenacting, we got a new place to do battles in northern Indiana. It was perfect timing, as the Chicago-based 2.Panzerdivision group had just acquired an original StuG-III. They ran it at a couple other battle sites in Illinois, alongside their Hetzer, then got to leave it on the property there for almost a full year, and we got to play both eastern & western front battles with it there. As the event coordinator, dressed as a Heer Hauptmann, I got to ride on top of it a few times.... SO MUCH FUN. But alas, some financial problems caused the owner to sell it in 2000 to a guy (who's name escapes me) in California. I don't know if it's still there, but hopefully still running.

Oh wow! Hmmm, could that have been Jacques Littlefield? Perhaps that StuG you got to ride with is now at AHM in MA.

Hi from Australia mate. I appreciate that as opposed to a lot of you tubers you've not only got a passion about your subject you actually know your shit and are prepared to learn from the people who run these things. In my opinion you're up there with Attenborough.( Ok different fields but you get my drift.) Keep it up mate.
