This is one of those songs wherein the group actually created something bigger than they could have ever realized or imagined, but it also typically happens that way because they at least know it's good the moment they playback their recording of it. I mean, most artists know what they're capable of for the most part. This is the absolute peak for the Offspring, the measure by which you can judge any song after it and supposedly upcoming (IDK if they're still together and/or putting out new material) songs. This is where calling it spectacular is damn near an understatement.
I’m currently 170 years young. I remember this song being played right at the end of the Mexican-American War. What a time to be alive. Wish I could go back to my childhood days 😢

@@dismalproject1974 I could never make asses or teakettles of Come Out And Play until I read the lyrics. Could never understand jack in that song. I have good hearing and a good stereo.

Seeing he is not only a rockstar but he is also a Doctor of molecular biology, maybe his message through this song perhaps was that self-esteem is built through a continuous drive towards accomplishment.
It's good that he has rock star to fall back on, in case molecular biology doesn't work out. Maybe he should form a band with Brian May. Are there any other rockers with Ph.D. degrees out there?
@@andrewbesso4257 Not sure of Ph.D Degrees, but kind of related, on a "things you might not expect from musicians" subject: the singer of Midnight Oil, Peter Garrett, ended up going into politics in Australia. I haven't kept up with that, or the band reunions. That's all I know.

The 90s best decade for music especially grunge and rock as well as few other genres, I'm so privileged to of been in my teens through out that decade.
"Self Esteem" wound up being the second single released from The Offspring's third studio album and caught on fire in 1995, charting in America and Europe. MTV showed the video a lot of love and helped elevate the band to new heights of popularity. The Offspring, with several other punk bands of the era, brought punk rock into the mainstream as nobody had quite done before... All due respect to The Ramones.
Ramones weren't the first punk band, bands like the Stooges, Misfits, etc. were arguably more influential to punk than Ramones. (maybe pop-punk but even then, the buzzcocks made better pop-punk than ramones)
This is the song that kinda defined my musical taste when I was a little kid. Its the first thing I remember hearing and being blown away by it right away, and the feeling still remains to this day.
lyrics: I wrote her off for the tenth time today And practiced all the things I would say But she came over I lost my nerve I took her back and made her dessert Now I know I'm being used That's okay because I like the abuse I know she's playing with me That's okay 'cause I've got no self-esteem Oh yeah yeah yeah Oh yeah yeah Oh yeah yeah yeah Oh yeah yeah We make plans to go out at night I wait till two then I turn out the light This rejection's got me so low If she keeps it up I just might tell her so Oh yeah yeah yeah Oh yeah yeah Oh yeah yeah yeah Oh yeah yeah When she's saying that she wants only me Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends When she's saying that I'm like a disease Then I wonder how much more I can spend Well I guess I should stick up for myself But I really think it's better this way The more you suffer The more it shows you really care, right, yeah, yeah Now I'll relate this a little bit That happens more than I'd like to admit Late at night she knocks on my door She's drunk again and looking to score Now I know I should say no But that's kind of hard when she's ready to go I may be dumb But I'm not a dweeb I'm just a sucker with no self-esteem Oh yeah yeah yeah Oh yeah yeah Oh yeah yeah yeah Oh yeah yeah When she's saying, oh, that she wants only me Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends When she's saying, oh, that I'm like a disease Then I wonder how much more I can spend Well, I guess I should stick up for myself But I really think it's better this way The more you suffer The more it shows you really care Right, yeah, yeah, yeah
I would listen to this track repeatedly back when it came out (I was probably 13 or so) and only as I got older I really understood the lyrics. It perfectly encapsulates what it feels like to be in a dysfunctional relationship and clining onto it just for the sake of not being alone.
I was 26 when it came out and pretty much living through the exact scenario described in the song. I'd like to say that was an epiphany for me and gave me the courage to stand up for myself, but, nah. Kept clinging and suffering until she got tired of toying with me.🤣
I discovered The Offspring back in 97 when a classmate sold me their album Smash for candy money. It completely changed my whole outlook on music for good.
I remember discovering offspring when I was in middle school around 2011 and I thought I was the coolest for it, it played on the radio and I turned it up and my mom sang the entire lyrics and that’s when I found out that is was my mom who was actually the coolest
I remember when this came out, I was 20, young and free and everything was so great!!! Here I am nearly 30 years on and everything is so depressing, I think I took my youth for granted but those days were so good that I have to relive them by coming back to this and feeling happy again.
Point he’s implying is music from the 2000s and back was way different from the music today and he is true. Sure there are some people trying to still make music like this, however back then was the pinnacle.
In -95 my music teacher asked the class what newer songs we thought still would be popular in the future. I answered with this song. Is it true? I think so.

nah dude if you just put the tiniest bit of effort in looking for good bands/songwriters rn there a fuck ton of them. Thios song holds memories for me too and i love it, but your assessment is just. Dont you think people 20 years ago said the same thing? Like "the offspring" wasnt loked down upon by fans of the Rolling Stones, The Who or Led Zeppelin. The key to enjoying music is to stop trying to compare different generations and just be happy that every generation has a unique style to express themselves

Putting some TH-cam music videos on and my son has just put this on.

2 months and this album is 27 years old, damn
So great

This is one of those songs wherein the group actually created something bigger than they could have ever realized or imagined, but it also typically happens that way because they at least know it's good the moment they playback their recording of it. I mean, most artists know what they're capable of for the most part. This is the absolute peak for the Offspring, the measure by which you can judge any song after it and supposedly upcoming (IDK if they're still together and/or putting out new material) songs. This is where calling it spectacular is damn near an understatement.
'I may be dumb, but I'm not a dweeb' Always loved this song. Sad how fitting it is for my last relationship though.
At least you're exploring some cool new music
I read that as soon as it played on the video😂

I’m currently 170 years young. I remember this song being played right at the end of the Mexican-American War. What a time to be alive. Wish I could go back to my childhood days 😢
Almost the end. There was that weird music at the very end. Sounded like something from aladin

This is one of my favorite songs from when I was a little kid.
I absolutely love The Offspring and this song in particular. One of the things you will notice about this band is all of their lyrics are audibly understandable. Very clear vocals and you don't get the words wrong.
Read Dexter's curriculum, and you will understand why he can speak and spell properly.
As opposed to Come Out And Play, which is right near impossible to understand.
@@devilsoffspring5519 yeah I remember that had a learning curve. I would listen to each line individually and Rewind it until I got the words right.
@@dismalproject1974 I could never make asses or teakettles of Come Out And Play until I read the lyrics. Could never understand jack in that song. I have good hearing and a good stereo.
Long ago in times of my metal / death, goth, etc wandering "far & wide", I somehow ended up with lyrics for some death metal song - guess what, I could clearly understand every word 😆

What happened to grunge, New metal?
Me too I couldn’t imagine growing up in these times right now
Me too, I totally agree! Love your username btw✌️♥️🤘
At least you survived.... Lucky you!
Facts
"Self Esteem" wound up being the second single released from The Offspring's third studio album and caught on fire in 1995, charting in America and Europe.
MTV showed the video a lot of love and helped elevate the band to new heights of popularity.
The Offspring, with several other punk bands of the era, brought punk rock into the mainstream as nobody had quite done before... All due respect to The Ramones.
Barons Of Saturn ]0
Ramones weren't the first punk band, bands like the Stooges, Misfits, etc. were arguably more influential to punk than Ramones. (maybe pop-punk but even then, the buzzcocks made better pop-punk than ramones)
This is grunge rock not punk
This song finally reached 100 mil views!
This is the song that kinda defined my musical taste when I was a little kid. Its the first thing I remember hearing and being blown away by it right away, and the feeling still remains to this day.
lyrics:
I wrote her off for the tenth time today
And practiced all the things I would say
But she came over
I lost my nerve
I took her back and made her dessert
Now I know I'm being used
That's okay because I like the abuse
I know she's playing with me
That's okay 'cause I've got no self-esteem
Oh yeah yeah yeah
Oh yeah yeah
Oh yeah yeah yeah
Oh yeah yeah
We make plans to go out at night
I wait till two then I turn out the light
This rejection's got me so low
If she keeps it up I just might tell her so
Oh yeah yeah yeah
Oh yeah yeah
Oh yeah yeah yeah
Oh yeah yeah
When she's saying that she wants only me
Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends
When she's saying that I'm like a disease
Then I wonder how much more I can spend
Well I guess I should stick up for myself
But I really think it's better this way
The more you suffer
The more it shows you really care, right, yeah, yeah
Now I'll relate this a little bit
That happens more than I'd like to admit
Late at night she knocks on my door
She's drunk again and looking to score
Now I know I should say no
But that's kind of hard when she's ready to go
I may be dumb
But I'm not a dweeb
I'm just a sucker with no self-esteem
Oh yeah yeah yeah
Oh yeah yeah
Oh yeah yeah yeah
Oh yeah yeah
When she's saying, oh, that she wants only me
Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends
When she's saying, oh, that I'm like a disease
Then I wonder how much more I can spend
Well, I guess I should stick up for myself
But I really think it's better this way
The more you suffer
The more it shows you really care
Right, yeah, yeah, yeah
are you high????
Thank you.

Kept clinging and suffering until she got tired of toying with me.🤣
More accurately, it's about a guy staying with a girl that's a bitch because he's in it for the ass
I just saw these guys last night and they sounded phenominal. Still rocking in 2021. They opened up with this song and it was a BANGER!!!

There's no such thing as a particular period of time being the "most real music ever written." You need to listen to more music.
Point he’s implying is music from the 2000s and back was way different from the music today and he is true. Sure there are some people trying to still make music like this, however back then was the pinnacle.

Acctualy music was better back than
nah dude if you just put the tiniest bit of effort in looking for good bands/songwriters rn there a fuck ton of them.
Dude that bullshit. I listen to stuff from 60's up to 2010. Saying today music is crap is wrong. Have you not heard any of billie eilish stuff.
