When I was just a little girl, Helen started on my path as an artist because what she was doing intrigued me and fascinated me. Her enthusiasm and energy inspired me. Somehow for me and in me, she connected painting with Joy.
I watched Helen early in my life as an adult ..I love her joy, enthusiasm, and great teaching skills

I absolutely adored Helen! I went to one of her workshops and she really was a great teacher. I bought the book she wrote and it was great. I can’t believe it was 25 years ago

I truly enjoy watching you and listening to you. You’re marvelous,and inspiring! The first video I watched of you was the way you believed the old masters had probably painted to save on their colors. I just thought that was absolutely brilliant!! I understand glazing now!
I used to just paint large smooth granite rocks with acrylic paint and got many compliments. Even though they happened to turn out quite good they were still on a rock.
After losing my left hand to multiple sclerosis,just the feeling ,I had to give up all of my hobbies and money makers such as jewelry and miniature clay pieces and other crafts that took both hands. So I decided to start watercoloring. I realized how different that medium was to acrylics real fast!! It took a while to use the light of the canvas and go from there. I’ve achieved some decent greeting cards, but not large pieces.
I recently got attracted to gel printing so I had to purchase more acrylic paints for my printing. Then I say “ColorByFeliks” on TH-cam and saw a painting (acrylic) that I was just itching to paint . Do now I’m being drawn back into acrylics.
Acrylics are what you are using correct? Not oil? I’ve never tried oil. Do you have videos on oil painting?

I used to live in the south shore of Long Island but had to relocate to my home land . Ventura Ca. I live in Taft Ca. Now. Nog the best place we’d to live , but it’s home. I’m 58 and my 84 yr. Old mom takes care of me . 😊 she loves my painting, but she is biased. Thank goodness her husband used to be an acrylic and oil paint instructor ! My most recent painting got his best response yet!! It was in acrylic though!! When I do a piece In watercolor that gets great reviews then I can start selling my paintings.

PS I NOTICED A SPARKLY SHINE IN THe PAINTING OF THE APPLES. Is it just the water making it look sparkly?
First of all, thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately, Helen passed away in 1994 and cannot answer you directly. However, the glazing technique Helen demonstrated is done using thinned oil paint over a dried acrylic underpainting. The majority of Helen's lessons will be done using oil paints and the apples are being painted with oil paints, so the shine you observed is from the glossy, wet oil. @ManushriAnand - Hello and welcome. It's called a mahl stick, also known as a mahlstick. Helen uses it to steady her brush hand while painting finer details. She places it on the edge of the canvas or easel and rests her brush-hand on it.

Sad to say, Helen died in 1994, so she cannot answer you directly. She was a fantastic artist and teacher. In the vast majority of her lessons, Helen used oil paint. She did use acrylic in many of her underpaintings and usually mentioned its use at the start of the lesson, if applicable. Thanks for your question and support.
