The people of Sri Lanka are known for their warm hospitality and friendly, open nature. They exude an extraordinary warmth that is reflected in their everyday lives. In Sri Lanka, the concept of "hospitality" is truly lived - visitors are welcomed like friends, often with a wide smile and a cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea. It's not uncommon to be drawn into a conversation on the street that ends with an invitation for a meal or a visit to their home. What sets the people of Sri Lanka apart is their deeply ingrained culture of respect and care. Despite the challenges many Sri Lankans face in their daily lives, they approach others with incredible calmness and a positive attitude. This mindset is also reflected in their close connection to nature and their traditions - living simply in harmony with the environment, a deep spirituality, and a respectful approach to nature and animals. Sri Lankans are creative, welcoming, and always eager to help others. Whether in rural villages or bustling cities, there is a strong sense of community where people support one another. They take great pride in their country, their history, and their traditions, and are more than happy to share them with those interested in their culture. The diversity of ethnic groups and religions in Sri Lanka adds to the country’s unique culture, and the people live this diversity in remarkable harmony. This openness and acceptance of one another is not only reflected in daily interactions but also in the joy and pride they express through their festivals, dances, and culinary heritage. Overall, the people of Sri Lanka are a living example of kindness, hospitality, and the power of a positive mindset. Those who visit the country will be enchanted not only by its breathtaking nature and history but also by the warm-hearted, generous people who make it such a special place.
I was super excited to see this video as a Sri Lankan who followed this channel to know about Sweden for quite a while, however, something I would want to add, you mentioned "It's not exactly a foody destination", well, I would say Sri Lanka has a variety of foods that you enjoy depends on your location where you stay.
Thank you so much! And I think you make an excellent point about the food. Come to think of it, since I'm not all that curious about food I might have missed to look for the really good options as well - so maybe I wasn't really showing the food scene in the best light. Sorry for that!
Agree that you can eat absolutely superb food in Sri Lanka. And I am saying that as a foodie. The fine dining is not cheap though, almost Sweden prices sometimes. ^^ On the other hand you can get an awesome meal for very little aswell.
‘Tear drop of India’ is a recent coinage, after the ethnic war that raged here. Also we are no part of India, we are an independent nation. It was always known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. In ancient times it was known as the Granary of the East because we had the most marvelous irrigation systems that produced a surplus of food that was exported too; this was more than 1500 years ago. The earliest name of the island was Sinhalaya, Helaya to the natives. This was more than7500 years ago. Later, visitors and colonists called it different names. Thambapanni ( Bengali Prince Vijaya who married the native queen Kuweni 600BC); Taprobane (Greeks) Serendib(Arabs) Seylan (Portuguese) Ceylon (British). Sri Lanka was the name adopted when it became a republic in 1972)
Guess the re public bs adapted by colonist stooges screwed all sovereignty.. ' ' also sin for the helaya..' came lafter vijaya the injun terrorist.. Not befor there was no sin ..' it was all helaya.. 😂😂😂

Thank you so much! And it would be awesome to do something together actually. The only problem is that I have my day job so I'm not traveling all that often - or being as flexible as I'd like with my planning. But who knows, maybe we have some common destination in mind? Or even some video with discussions about destinations instead? Would you mind firing off an email to info@threestarvagabond.com if that sounds feasible?
Thanks for lovely video.. all who are watching who haven't visit Sri Lanka yet. Please visit and explore the beauty of paradise... lot of love from Sri lanka .😍👏❤
Hi there, thank you for covering Sri Lanka A couple things to note: 0:30, In Sri Lanka we do not use the moniker "Teardrop of India", it's actually "Pearl of the Indian Ocean". I am honestly not sure from where the "Teardrop of India" name comes from. Most locals don't say or even know about that. Also, Sri Lanka's culture is closer to that of Thailand than India. Both countries are Buddhist (note that Buddhism actually spread to Thailand from Sri Lanka) and its culture is influenced heavily by Buddhism. India, on the other hand is a culture mostly influenced by Hinduism. Because of this, Sri Lankan and Indian cultures are vastly different despite being very close to each other.
I really enjoyed your commentary.. And the way you almost nailed the pronunciation of names of the cities and sites... As a Sri Lankan, I kinda have some other tidbits to add though.. 1. Don't compare us to India. ( most of us hate it as you already get from the other comments. ) Also, " tear drop of India" was kinda sore spot and really a recent thing. " pearl of Indian Ocean" was pretty old ( from British era) and I guess most of us are more ok with that. 2. For transportation, you can use Uber in cities like Kandy and Colombo, or our own local app, Pickme, which has pretty good coverage in the whole Island, rather than hassling with local tuk tuk guys when traveling without a guide. And maybe stick with cars when they are available. They're less likely to be .. mmm... scammers? ( tuk tuks are notorious for scams even to us locals. ) 3. Tipping is solely a new addition for more touristy areas. Like Ella and Galle fort. Most other places you should never tip. That's a pretty embarrassing thing for me to learn as a Sri Lankan, tbh. 4. If you are traveling to see the famous sites, you would have to go to pretty touristy areas. Which are pretty crowded and ... mmmm... full of tourist attractions. Like boasted, mediocre food... They won't be offering authentic, simple, local meals. And you most likely won't get to interact with genuine Locals, ( like that guy you met in Colombo). If you have time, and want to have a relaxing vacation, try border areas of Colombo. Like my town, to the south and middle of the Island. We don't have much to offer other than beautiful natural views and Semi luxury accomodations, local food, and really simple and educated locals who wouldn't bat an eye to help you, and be on their own way. Thank you for visiting our country.. The land we hope to be more friendly and hospitable while keeping our authentic culture and heritage intact, which we find pretty hard thing to achieve these days.. But we will improve for sure.. P.S. I forgot to mention, tap water is pretty safe for us Asians, but for Europeans, better stick with bottled water.. Our water sources are some of the best of Asia and tap water is treated and distributed. But, these sources are in different parts of the Island and even for us locals, it feels different.
Wow Great show. Congratulations and thank you for your lovely documentary! Keep it up!! Please visit our little Villa in the mountains where Time stands Still!. It has breathtaking mountain views. You could do a beautiful Video from the place. . Hindagala Retreat Kandy Sri Lanka
Very detailed video! Thanks for taking the time to make it (wish you didn't use Indian music in it though haha) :) Just one correction: a lot of countries ruled Sri Lanka but none of them conquered the whole island (until the Sri Lankans basically handed the country over to the British in the 1800s!). So the Chola kings from India you mentioned at 9:59 only conquered some parts of Sri Lanka, like Northern Sri Lanka :) I saw you reply to someone else's comment about the food scene saying that you're not that curious about food so must have not found the good spots, so I excuse you for implying SL does not have a good food scene :D Hope you visit again (and get to eat some good food - try the seafood, if you're a fan) :)
Haha, yeah I know the music wasn't right - but there's no royalty free Sri Lankan music on the TH-cam Audio Library unfortunately. But thanks for those corrections! Much appreciated - very good points all of those! :)
Looked like an interesting trip, I’m not sure if I’d ever visit Shi Lanka myself, it looked dirty and run down, guess I’m getting older or spoiled 😂. I’m glad to see you had the train passing over the bridge and a beer, good for you, talking about the train it was quite amusing watching the people on the train taking pictures of the people on the bridge and visa versa. Thanks for taking us along and stay safe till next time.
I guess it was a bit run down and dirty, but I liked that about the place! It's not as polished and touristy as many other countries - and there's definitely a certain charm to that :D But yeah I loved the train(s). Both riding the train and watching them go past with people hanging out. It's really fun! So cheers, and let's hope you get a lot more posh experiences than this one then :D
Just for my info. Could you please point out to the part of the video where Sri Lanka looks dirty and run down? It looks old though, but didn't spot any dirt.
@ There seem to be quite a bit of paper and bottles just laying around, especially along the railroad tracks. It’s just a personal observation and opinion.
@@pkharper3525 yeah true. Some people litter the streets dropping things here and there especially when there's public gatherings, but it's remarkably less compared to other places.. Even in the UK, we see plenty of chewing gums and bottles floating around in city centers. . I asked because I really liked to know what SL can improve. In order to keep streets and rail tracks as clean as Singapore, there needs to be punishments.. SL law is not that punitive that's the issue.
If you pause at time @8:58 you could see a slight resemblance to a lion head looking away from you. Some ppl say that this is the reason for it to be called Lion Rock to answer for you question at @10:39
Lion some how seems like a colonist agenda ..' those in the know believe it to be a peacocks paws...' while the head & rest a the proof is tuckwd away in a bri issh museum..😂
Sri Lanka is not the "teardrop of India"; it is the Pearl of the Indian Ocean. Our people are immensely proud of our small but remarkable nation. Comparing Sri Lanka to India or emphasizing similarities can feel like rubbing salt in a wound, similar to asking a Canadian if they’re American. I hope this helps you understand our Sri Lanka.
I like your descriptions about my mother land. It is very honest and true. Sri Lankans prefer soap and water than toilet paper. We eat with our hands. We don't drink tap water. We boil our water. Be careful when eating open food it could contaminated with dust and flies. Beware about dengu fever from mozzie. Certain time of the day. Read and educate. Its a tropical beautiful paradise. December is so expensive because all Sri Lankans coming home for long school holidays on Christmas and New Year to celebrate with their family and relatives. Wish Europeans visit after Christmas. Hotels are fully booked by overseas visitors local expats finding hard to book hotels in Colombo and sea side hotels. We pay the same amount in dollars but tour agents have group bookings suddenly we find our bookings cancelled.
1. As many others in this forum have pointed out, Sri Lanka has never been called the teardrop of India. Years ago when hardly anyone knew where on earth Ceylon(then)/Sri Lanka(now) was, print media used to describe our location as 'the teardrop-shaped island off the southern tip of India". Ill-informed people like you to this day keep describing our beautiful island the way you did. Please desist. 2. Kandy is an anglicised version of the Sinhala name 'kanda uda rata' meaning 'city on the mountain'. Mountain in Sinhala is 'Kanda'. Here again you are wrong. You thought the name of the city was candy as in chocolates , toffees, etc. , and you stated that you could not keep a straight face when you heard the name Kandy because we only exported "cinnamon and tea" !! 3. Our colonial history was not Portuguese, British and Dutch as stated by you; it was Portuguese, Dutch and British, in that order. I suggest you stick to documenting your trip to our gorgeous island, and stay away from its history and geography, as your knowledge in these two areas is abysmal.
Sad scene em all in a hurry to create2 content as their lives probably are boring.. ' so short escapes from their concentration camp nation states of the EU..' being taken over by the neo natzies right across the board atm .. One can't expect much from these vlogs that seem to pop up created by every tom/dick/harry/larry/fanny or adam & smith.. lol.. 😂😂
Dear sir warm welcome.... Thanak you very much visit you to sri lanka and your briefing about srl lanka very excellent.every body if you need get a defferent and unforgettable experience to visit my wonderful paradise........

Great video , although you could’ve done separate video for each tourist places I’m from Sri Lanka , we mostly respect women and it’s a safe country , of course be aware of scams Also, it’s considered as a food destination ! Have so much variety of quality food choices
I don't think monsoons matter anymore. For the past like 2 years or so, we've been experiencing non stop rain, so no matter what time of year you decide to come here, you're guaranteed to experience rain. There may be some dry weeks here and there, but it's 90% rain.
Haha very good question! I'd say that it was a bit more lacking in flavour...but that's not necessarily a bad thing in a hot country where you want something refreshing and thirst-quenching!
There is no competition or should not compare Sri Lanka and Thailand. Both countries are Buddhist countries which is practice Terawadi Buddhism and both countries are connected very deeply with it. But, Tourism aspect both countries concept are different. Thailand attract many tourists because of the extra legalised pleasurable services. Sri Lanka doesn't not have those due to cultural restrictions. Second thing is, Sri Lanka is not a tear drop of India. That is wrong. Then India has to be look like an eye. It's not look loke that. Yes, We have a relationship. Sri Lanka is the PEARL of Indian ocean. It can be proven by it's value. Sri Lanka is a paradise and it's offer things non of the country can offer in the world as one unit. Gem, Tea, Wild life, Elephants, Wheal, Cricket, Whether systems, History, Buddhism, friendly kind people, educated talented people, Brave military units, first country wiped out terrorism completely in history and at the same time beautiful smiling people, no crime towards tourists, Great road systems, Morden city life, Great music Festival and clubs, and more. Visit or watch videos of people visited the country. After being in Sri Lanka, When you return back to your own country you will a better and different person in good way. More loving caring and family person. 👍🌷🇱🇰
Thanks for the information. However, would like to feedback on a couple of things you've mentioned are not really true :) The tap water in Sri Lanka is very much safe. The safety - Sri Lanka ranked number one for safety travels for women in the world. Also, Sri Lanka is known for its food btw :) Good luck on your channel. Pretty interesting
Sri Lanka is not a tear drop of India, it has created by some unknown source, it use to say Sri Lanka is Pearl of the Indian Ocean and still using the same synonym.
The lion doesn't seem like a lion rock today because the structure has mostly broken off from its original design when it was built back in the day it did look and have the face of a lion
In truth & in Fact, at the Entrance to the "Sigiriya Rock" there had been a complete Massive LION's figure & it was built by the King. That means, to enter the rock you must go through the lion's body. How ever after many thousand years gone by now remaining & you can see only the two Lion Paws/legs from Both sides.
Yes it is Paradise as says Pliny the Elder’s book 📕 written late 17th century. Some books reveal birth human origin in this tiny island which is Atlantis. I love 💕 ❤my country a lot and I miss her a lot!
I guess you are misinformed about tipping in Sri Lanka, tipping is not mandatory like it is in USA, if you tip someone it will make them happy, also there if there is service charge in the bill you really don't have to tip.
Sri Lanka os NEVER a part or look like India but a unique Asian mixed culture where 90% were Buddhists-led Administration supported and respected by all other Religeous, Cultural and social communities
Dear brother, please dont say Sri lanka is tear drop of india. I am a Sri lankan. We never say that for this amazing country like paradise . We say this is PEARL OF INDIAN OCEAN .
Thank you for the nice video. But no point of relating with India just because it’s close.. the real essence of Sri Lanka is the culture adapted based on Buddhism. Island was more touched with calmness, spirituality vibe.. it didn’t sound relatable when you had some punjabi (indian) music in the background. 😊. But overall, appreciate the video. Hope you have a good time!

@
There seem to be quite a bit of paper and bottles just laying around, especially along the railroad tracks.
The audacity to say "dirty and run down"
Superb content ❤
I'm glad you visited my home country 🇱🇰 .
Greetings from Uppsala 🇸🇪 .
Hi brother
Ceylon - 🇱🇰Srilanka🇱🇰 Is A Very Beautiful Country On The Planet..Even Thought I ❤ My Country..🇱🇰👌
You did the best review mate. We're not a perfect country but we've got a lot more to offer.
If you pause at time @8:58 you could see a slight resemblance to a lion head looking away from you. Some ppl say that this is the reason for it to be called Lion Rock to answer for you question at @10:39
Another commenter actually mentioned that there used to be more lion-like features that have disappeared by now. That could also be the reason!
I'm impressed, very, with your videography. So many high quality scenes and locations.
Wow, thank you so much! But I really shouldn't take credit - the beauty comes from the landscapes over there, of course :D
Having crappy Indian music in the background is a good indication the person who put up the video clearly hasn't done their research properly 🤮
Sad scene em all in a hurry to create2 content as their lives probably are boring.. ' so short escapes from their concentration camp nation states of the EU..' being taken over by the neo natzies right across the board atm ..
One can't expect much from these vlogs that seem to pop up created by every tom/dick/harry/larry/fanny or adam & smith.. lol.. 😂😂
😂😂😂👍 very true.
Dear sir warm welcome.... Thanak you very much visit you to sri lanka and your briefing about srl lanka very excellent.every body if you need get a defferent and unforgettable experience to visit my wonderful paradise........

Thanks Miro. Do you have a video about Egypt? Believe it or not I’m a woman 😄. And I’m travelling solo a lot 😅
That's awesome! I think one shouldn't be too afraid of things even if there might be some concerns at times. And I actually have a couple of videos about things in Egypt. One is this: th-cam.com/video/FWURuyEBSZo/w-d-xo.html
@ Thanks again! I have watched it now, that’s another great video 👍

Also, it’s considered as a food destination ! Have so much variety of quality food choices
Happy Time. happy moments come with a happy heart. ❤❤
Great vedio
I don't think monsoons matter anymore. For the past like 2 years or so, we've been experiencing non stop rain, so no matter what time of year you decide to come here, you're guaranteed to experience rain. There may be some dry weeks here and there, but it's 90% rain.
I had no idea about that! I guess the weather is changing all over the world these days :(
Wow, I want to visit sirilanka :) maybe even move, loved all the buddha stuff
There's a LOT of Buddhas all over the place :D And it's quite beautiful with both ancient and modern sights like that
Love from Sri lanka
Thank you verymuch suggesting attraction Sri Lanka
Well done, bro 🙏👍🇱🇰🇺🇸
13:32 and 17:52
How was the local beer compared to Swedish beer? (Yeah I'm asking the important questions)
Good job Miro. Still waiting for you in Panama.
One of these days I'll get there, I promise :D

Welcome to Beautiful tiny little island , Srilanka .🇱🇰💓.
Really very amazing country Sri Lanka.i will visit soon
Thanks for visit my country...❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sri Lanka is not a tear drop of India, it has created by some unknown source, it use to say Sri Lanka is Pearl of the Indian Ocean and still using the same synonym.
Probably Indians named it so.. 😂
The lion doesn't seem like a lion rock today because the structure has mostly broken off from its original design when it was built back in the day it did look and have the face of a lion
Oh! That makes perfect sense - I had no idea!
Hello, Which company do you book for safari with transfer?
Nice ❤❤️ From 🇱🇰
In truth & in Fact, at the Entrance to the "Sigiriya Rock" there had been a complete Massive LION's figure & it was built by the King. That means, to enter the rock you must go through the lion's body. How ever after many thousand years gone by now remaining & you can see only the two Lion Paws/legs from Both sides.
What a content
Yes it is Paradise as says Pliny the Elder’s book 📕 written late 17th century. Some books reveal birth human origin in this tiny island which is Atlantis. I love 💕 ❤my country a lot and I miss her a lot!
Welcome to srilanka 🇱🇰❤️
Thank you! :D
I guess you are misinformed about tipping in Sri Lanka, tipping is not mandatory like it is in USA, if you tip someone it will make them happy, also there if there is service charge in the bill you really don't have to tip.
Amazing
Thank you visit my mother land 🇱🇰
Amazing. Thanks for the views and useful tips.

Way more than 100 people. 99% is an understatement
@@ThreeStarVagabond cool keep judging
I can't believe you showed the guy stroking his snake in public.
Such behaviour! I'm shocked!
Dear brother, please dont say Sri lanka is tear drop of india. I am a Sri lankan. We never say that for this amazing country like paradise . We say this is PEARL OF INDIAN OCEAN .
ආයුබෝවන් ශ්රී ලංකා .🙏
🪷🪷🪷🪷🪷🪷🪷🪷🪷🪷🪷🪷🪷🪷
Thailand is better but i think sri lanka is cheaper..
Sri lanka❤
Welcome to sri Lanka❤ And we are not Indian or lite Indian 😏❤
❤
it's not dang tear of india and it has never even been connected
Im sri lankan🇱🇰
Thank you for the nice video. But no point of relating with India just because it’s close.. the real essence of Sri Lanka is the culture adapted based on Buddhism. Island was more touched with calmness, spirituality vibe.. it didn’t sound relatable when you had some punjabi (indian) music in the background. 😊. But overall, appreciate the video. Hope you have a good time!
