  • All of a sudden the LCD display of my Logitech Z-5500 speaker set stopped working. The unit itself was working just fine. The background lighting also worked fine, I just couldn't read the digits anymore. In this video I explain my quick fix to this problem.

Thanks for the tip! In my case the reflow did not help, but during re-assembly I found that the ribbon cable started to break off one wire at the time. In almost no time the cable was detached from the main PCB. When I inspected it, it looked like the glue for fixation caused a slow corrosion of the wires. So after replacing the whole ribbon cable everything works like a charm again! :-)

Nice tip I'm about to try that and will let y'all know in here if it worked for me.
Edit : Ok so after a first attempt at just remelting the solder already on it the display came back on so I properly removed the old solder and applied fresh one on both end of the cable just in case the mainboard side decided to fail soon too and it's been working flawlessly since yesterday. This 5.1 have been serving me for so long and I can still see it rock my ears for many more years to come. Thank you !

Freaking legend. I got excited about upgrading when my z-5500 finally stopped working, turns out it's just the display, which is great, cause there really isn't really much better surround sound tech out there since this came out ahah

Mine is fully working, just have a few backlight leds dead, but it still has backlight so I won't bother fixing for now...
But in terms of speakers, the only thing I ever seen really super close to Z5500 is the Edifier S760D, but they cost so much more than Z5500 cost back in the day, they are RARE too compared to Z5500 back in the day...
And for last, they look so similar that S760D even looks like it came out of the same factory as an upgraded Z5500 but costing more than double LOL.
PS: Bought my Z5500 back in like 2005 brand new for 250€ in promotion, nothing ever got close to them and specially not nowadays unless for big prices of 1000€ and above considering how hard it is to get the already expensive Edifier S760D, never seen one in my country...

Same issue (on a $70 AUD second hand Z-5500); dim display after 10 minutes use. Resoldered both ends, so far so good (20 min in..). All caps look fine. Factory volume pot soldering looks pretty dodgy as well! Thanks for the vid.

I had a similar problem on my Logitech Z-680. I resoldered the connector and replaced the 1000uf capacitor on the power inputs. The problem went away. My LED lights on the backlighting were also very dim and about to go bad. I replaced them with 0805 LEDs. Instead of three LEDs, I just replaced them with one and it was more than bright enough. I turned it sideways since I didn't have a right angle LED SMT part. It was not easy to solder it sideways, but got it done finally. I don't like the mods other people did with the LED light facing forward because it creates a bright spot near where the LEDs are mounted. I hope I would never have to do it again because those SMT parts are very tiny and trying to solder them while holding it with a tweezer was not a job for someone who just had caffine.

I did the process the vídeo and it didn't work, I even changed the flat cable, but it didn't help. In my case, the display is not completely off but it keeps oscillating, sometimes it becomes very faint and even disappears, could it be another part? A capacitor perhaps? I saw that the board has a 1000UF 16 volt capacitor, I was thinking about changing it.

Thank you! I really think this will fix my problem - it’s EXACTLY the same as yours. I will take it to work in the new year and reflow with new solder.
So excited to have my display back! The system is so great and in perfect working order otherwise. It would cost a lot to get such a good system from new.

i have a spare display for this but i havent gotten to it yet as im afraid ill break it. This is the best pc speakerset you can get. Nothing gets close to it and frankly i can't get myself to go solder on it. On my unit the leds are just all burned our except 1 due to age.

Some of the solder joints on the mainboard side started bubbling when I reflowed them, like there was some moisture. Maybe this issue has to do with the glue they slapped on these joints from the other side.

If it's faded only when powered off completely and then recovers when it's longer in the power socket, this should indicate a condensator problem?!

Try replacing the whole ribbon cable as I did (If you still have the speakers)

    • @Kheops.
      @Kheops. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You need to replace the solder completely. I did like you on a first attempt because I had no wick to remove the solder but the display only came back for like 15 mn before shutting down again.
So I whipped up some poorly homemade wick by braiding cables I had and replaced the whole soldering on both ends and everything came back to life and stayed that way.
