Dank Boi : very silly advice-99.9% of prague taxi drivers are honest. Just do not take those that hang around main sights with cars parked.- those are typically 'thieves' But generally, there is no need to use taxis with great and efficient public transport system in Prague.

Prague was my first time traveling alone. I stayed for 6 days and planned to see almost everything, from the Jewish town, the castle and cathedrals, to the parks, museums and restaurants, and even just walking through the streets where people live. I have never seen such a beautiful elegant city and the Bohemian culture is both intriguing and fascinating. I'm looking forward to coming back and exploring it more.
I fell in love with prague right away when i came out of the metro the first night: streets made of old stones; gas public street lights, medieval houses, Skoda trams, castle over the hill... beautiful.
As a tour guide in Prague, I think these are all great tips :) I'll add on : Don't be afraid to leave the Old Town area and explore other parts of the city! So many tourists just stick to the central area but the whole city has so much offer.
About the tipping, it is absolutely ok, if you don't tip at all. Usually we just round the number up and thats all. (for example you would pay 85 crown you would make it 90), that's how we do that in Czech republic, we are too lazy to count some procentage. And by the way, nice video.
I have a definite "do" for Prague though! DO use local trams for transportation, its awesome! especially if you want to go up to the castle from the city centre!
I lived in the Czech Republic for over 4 years (3 of them in Prague) and whenever I see your videos, Wolter, I feel nostalgic. Prague is a true gem of a place and I miss it dearly. Because Prague is a primate city, most tourists don't venture outside of the capital (with probably some exceptions going to Cesky Krumlov), which is a shame. There's so many great places around the republic. Brno, Olomouc, Kutna Hora, Telč, Adršpach, Karlovy Vary, Mělník, Vrchlabi, and the medieval areas of Nové Město nad Metují are all well worth a visit.
Also if you gonna go to Prague, be carefull at those places where you can exchange money. Because they should give you +/- 27Kč (Czech crown) for 1 Euro, but there are places (expecially in Prague) where they give like 20Kč or even less and they don't commit any crime. Right now it is kinda big deal here and laws will change so it is illegal, but who knows when...
Not anymore, the exchange rate changed. Just make sure to check the exchange rate online and compare it to the exchange offices. Currently it's about 26 czk for 1 euro.

Don't buy anything in Staromestske namesti (Old Town Square) and Prazsky hrad (Prague castle) areas, unless you are really rich. 4. Don't use Taxis if it's not absolutely necessary. Prague taxi drivers will try to cheat every foreginer. The final remark: Prague is believed to be relatively cheap; however, the Czech capital city is much more expensive than any city in neighbouring Poland or Slovakia.
10 more DONT's of Prague: 1) Don't use Taxis, they see just bag of gold. Buy tickets for mass transportation, they are all valid for bus, tram and metro. 2) Don't drink more than you are used to. Enough of drunks demaging historical statues, getting robbed or in trouble in here already. 3) Don't stay in center, travel to outskirts (via masstrans.) for cheaper prices and the real look of the Prague. 4) Don't be a loudmouth in public transportation, you can talk, but if whole wagon can hear you, just shut up. 5) Don't try to ask old people for help. 50s and up are not great english speakers, try people in their 20s. 6) Don't be a sheep. Standing in the middle of the street/way will grant you a wish you haven't wishrd for. 7) Don't litter. Simple, aint it? 8) Don't fund beggars, just don't. 9) Don't underestimate the traffic. There is a whole load of idiots, behind the wheel in here. 10) Don't be a dick in general.
I was there in 2018 never had anything but good experience with cab drivers, polite and helpful in every way. Taxi unbelievably cheap and honest took at least 6. One was when I got lost it was a busy friday evening and hard to get a taxi when finally one was free charged me next to nothing for a 1l2hr. drive to hotel felt obligated to give him a good tip. In heavy traffic I thought I'd be getting back to hotel forever instead taxis have a special lane just for them sped all the way cost me $3.00 all the while I saw the meter running. Meters are always visible to passengers. From airport to hotel ride about 45 min. cost me $20 a beautiful car too. In Japan the same ride cost me $100 from airport to destination. Never had a bad experience.
Just got back from three weeks in Prague and Czech Republic...absolutely fantastic. Went into the city many times and day tripped to many surrounding towns while there. Hit most all the high spots and not expensive....less than 1/2 US price for dinners.

Well, this "auto conversion" is a problem all over Europe. You MUST choose between charging your account with the account's currency, getting local money converted by an obscure company, or you debit your account with the amount in foreign currency directly. Do ever take the second choice!!!

The museum is in the church where Gabčík and Kubiš were eventually cornered and killed by germans. You can still see the bullet holes on the outside of the building around basement windows.
As a local person I have to say thank you! Especially for that part with eastern Europe, haha :D couple of things I would add up - don't use the taxi, use Uber or Bolt if you have to (although I would recommend public transport cause it is cheap, clean and very convenient). Use only ATMs of the reputable banks, or exchange money in the bank, never go to these "Exchange" places, cause they usually scam you (solid exchange rate should be around 25, 26CZK=1EUR). And try to look out for some less-touristy sights and places, we have plenty of them here, it's not just the castle and the bridge! If you want some inspirations, I highly recommend to watch some videos from the channel Honest guide, these guys are really great! Enjoy Prague!
I'm from Prague and just wanted to say thank you for your kind words. Prague really is amazing and it warms my heart seeing you saying all those kind words. But you've forgotten one thing - don't take a cab in Prague. Most probably you are going to get robbed in a daylight and cabbies have their ways to actually make it legal. Use public transport - the net and usage of buses, trams and Underground is so sofisticated you'll get anywhere. Or Uber.

Great video! Love this city and wish more people knew how great it was. Lived in Prague for six months now and can't say enough good stuff about it! Really beautiful, easy to get around, great food, great prices and a fantastic location if you want to travel in more of Europe. As he said, it's right in the centre of Europe and there are some very good (and cheap) companies that will take you to other countries. I especially recommend looking at trains (like those by regiojet) to surrounding European countries, as the prices are very good. My last piece of advice is that while Charles Bridge is beautiful, you will do much better to go to the bridge either side of it. You will get great views of the bridge without nearly as many tourists and will certainly see more of the bridge than if you were on it (too many tourists to see much).
The last part when you said "don´t call the Czech republic an Eastern Europe country" is so true :D Also, don´t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. People usually know at least a little bit of English. Learn some czech words, it´s funny but also nice when somebody tries to speak czech. I am Czech and live in Prague and this is very accurate ! Never take taxis and if you want to take pictures move to side and do not randomly stop all of a sudden to take it, making people behind you have to walk around you or almost bump into you!!!

Mala Strana District is my favorite. Much older than the Old City on the other side of the Charle's Bridge. :-) Remember that when you drink beer in the true Czech place, they come with the new one at once if you don't say STOP. "Bramboraky" - potato pancakes are my favorites.
Tourists show up at 9 am on the dot. I woke up early to see the architecture and all the details on the each building. I recommend it, especially for Charles bridge and old town square. Average spend on food: Breakfast: €3-4 Lunch: €10 Nice dinner: €20 I guess 10% is normal tip
The restaurant prices have gone up but still reasonable mainly because of wages. First time went in 1992 only three years after the fall of iron curtain it was dirt cheap paid less for beer than bottled water I think that still stands.
Prague was absolutely beautiful. We spent 3 days.... about the service, it generally sucked yes. Especially at the airport, they need to improve on that. It's 2024.But I also recommend a trip to Karlovy Vary!
I advise you to visit Karlovy Vary and to drink their local thermal water from many different fountains. And also advise to visit Velká Amerika in Prague.
I love prague and we go there every year because my granny lives there and it is almost a second home to me and always get a hotel out of the city because the metro is fantastic

Try not to get ripped off, yep. I am Czech and the touristy part of Prague really is full of overpriced stuff. You can watch Honest Guide here, a Czech youtuber makes videos about how not to get ripped of in Prague (taxis, exchangeplaces, overpriced food etc.) Also I hate that you are absolutely right about the services. I am currently working at the airport and so many colleagues are so rude/ unfriendly/ unhelpful to the tourists that I feel ashamed. You are right about the pickpockets, city centre and the trams, especially the ones going to the Prague Castle. You do have the right info :)
I may or may not have imbibed 2 or 3 or 4 absinthe drinks at that Absintherie at 2:37. Love this video! Definitely agree on the service. We would sometimes wait 20-30 minutes with empty drinks to get refills or get the check to pay. They never really smiled either. I still thought the city was lovely especially the St. Charles Bridge leading to St.Vitus Cathedral. Best tip you mentioned: get away from the crowds and explore away from the squares and bridge. We had fun exploring the small streets and walkways away from the tourist areas.

Mark, you must know that the Czech Republic is not only Prague and Krumlov. Small towns are wonderful like Broumov 15 km from my home. The rock city in Adrspach (Table Mountains) is gorgeous. If you want to get away from the crowds and see the mini Prage, go to Kłodzko in Poland. BTW When will you give the DON'TS of KRARÓW?

I am healthy. I had in mind the stone bridge of Saint John similar to the Charles bridge in Prague. The town is historically in the Bohemia. The coat of arms of the city is a Bohemian lion with a double tail. You occasionally did not notice the new beltway. It is very sad that you limit yourself to bars with terrible food.

@Club Soda my sister visited Rome, Italy when she was 18 years old and she said that most of the men there were creepy and even forcefull towards women ☹️ she was harrased and groped plenty of times (even from her private parts 😬) The mildest thing she experienced was cat calling. Many of the men there actually called to her like someone would call to their cats 🙄 she liked Rome otherwise but the way men acted there left a bad taste in her mouth 😥 (sorry for my English it isn't my mother language)

It's better to avoid exchanging money and pay with your debit card. If you really need to, go to a regular bank, they usually offer more favourable rates
It looks nice, but it is crazy overpriced compared to what you pay for. For example, you pay 3 times more for a trash wine in a tent than for a normal wine in a restaurant one street away. If you want to go to those countries especially for a christmas market, i would say Bratislava, Budapest, Krakow is a way better choice. Having said that, during a normal season, praha is the way to go.

The best city I've been to, by far the best. Most beautiful, astonishing european architecture... There is some kind of feeling that you sense only in Prague and nowhere else, you sense it's power, rich culture and history. Been there like 7,8 times, every time is like different town and of course, different experience. Good experience only, honestly.
We received absolutely shocking bad service in Vytopna railway restaurant on the top floor in the mall. They send the drinks you order to your table on a little train. I ordered freshly squeezed orange juice and my husband ordered coke. We were super impressed and ordered some more drinks. The barman who was preparing the drinks came over to our table and said in anger that if we wanted juice then we should leave and go to the juice bar across the street.......
If you are deciding to visit Prague for a vacation I really recommend also trying to visit Brno if you got the time, it has a beautiful center like Prague but less crouded and way more outside statues and monuments

If you're a vegetarian, go to Italian restaurants or for lunch there's a buffet in the centre called Country Life which serves cheap, wholesome and healthy food.
Country Life is a vegetarian restaurant located close to Karlovo namesti, but there's more, look out for e.g. Gowinda (Hare Krishna cult's Prague HQ), a chain of vegan restaurants called Loving Hut, chain of food restaurants/minimarkets called Sklizeno (focuses on serving high quality local food) - both to be found all over the city, Vegg-Go restaurant at Andel, Veganland in Vysocany's business mall Fenix etc.
About the tipping. It's not about 10 % but mostly it's about to "round" the final cost. So for example if your dinner bill is 178 Kč, you could say you want to pay 180, 190 or even 200. Or hand over 200 Kč bill and say "that's fine." Other than that, excellent video. Although I also expect you would mention the exchange booths :-) Thank you. :-)

I am czech, and i dont really care about this eastern/central/whatever europe, and i know the term "eastern europe" was used for the countries behind the iron curtain... but the iron curtain fell 30 years ago... It is like somebody in 1970 would say, that germany is still the third reich. So to be honest, i think this eastern/western/central thing now should be rather geographical than political ...
Do visit other quarters of Prague. The center is mostly for tourists. If you go a few tram stops (or walk for 15 minutes) in any direction you'll see quarters with nice historical buildings and it'll be a lot more local (and cheaper). (for example: Vinohrady, Letná, Žižkov, Smíchov, Dejvice...)

I wish I had played Bloodborne before visting Prague. When I was there nothing really in particular has caught my attention or was of interest for me but now that Im looking at old vacation pics I wish I had been more enthusiastic about this city. Especially the graveyard in the jewish quarter or the architecture of the buildings remind me so much of Bloodborne.

4) Don't be a loudmouth in public transportation, you can talk, but if whole wagon can hear you, just shut up.
5) Don't try to ask old people for help. 50s and up are not great english speakers, try people in their 20s.
6) Don't be a sheep. Standing in the middle of the street/way will grant you a wish you haven't wishrd for.
7) Don't litter. Simple, aint it?
8) Don't fund beggars, just don't.
9) Don't underestimate the traffic. There is a whole load of idiots, behind the wheel in here.
10) Don't be a dick in general.

I was there in 2018 never had anything but good experience with cab drivers, polite and helpful in every way. Taxi unbelievably cheap and honest took at least 6. One was when I got lost it was a busy friday evening and hard to get a taxi when finally one was free charged me next to nothing for a 1l2hr. drive to hotel felt obligated to give him a good tip. In heavy traffic I thought I'd be getting back to hotel forever instead taxis have a special lane just for them sped all the way cost me $3.00 all the while I saw the meter running. Meters are always visible to passengers. From airport to hotel ride about 45 min. cost me $20 a beautiful car too. In Japan the same ride cost me $100 from airport to destination. Never had a bad experience.
When I first came to Prague, the city brought me to tears as it is so beautiful. Run, don't wait to Prague.
Just got back from three weeks in Prague and Czech Republic...absolutely fantastic. Went into the city many times and day tripped to many surrounding towns while there. Hit most all the high spots and not expensive....less than 1/2 US price for dinners.
You guys really, genuinely seem to enjoy CZ and Prague, which makes me so happy! I don't see many travellers here on youtube even mentioning our small country, let alone visiting so often :) Merry Christmas!

Well, this "auto conversion" is a problem all over Europe. You MUST choose between charging your account with the account's currency, getting local money converted by an obscure company, or you debit your account with the amount in foreign currency directly. Do ever take the second choice!!!

I'm reading (listening to) the novel about his assassination. Definitely will check that out.
The museum is in the church where Gabčík and Kubiš were eventually cornered and killed by germans. You can still see the bullet holes on the outside of the building around basement windows.
As a local person I have to say thank you! Especially for that part with eastern Europe, haha :D couple of things I would add up - don't use the taxi, use Uber or Bolt if you have to (although I would recommend public transport cause it is cheap, clean and very convenient). Use only ATMs of the reputable banks, or exchange money in the bank, never go to these "Exchange" places, cause they usually scam you (solid exchange rate should be around 25, 26CZK=1EUR). And try to look out for some less-touristy sights and places, we have plenty of them here, it's not just the castle and the bridge! If you want some inspirations, I highly recommend to watch some videos from the channel Honest guide, these guys are really great! Enjoy Prague!
Don't just visit Prague
There are loads of places outside Prague that are beautiful too.
Prague was my absolute favorite stop when I went around the EU. Insanely gorgeous city with a great culture and nightlife.
I'm from Prague and just wanted to say thank you for your kind words. Prague really is amazing and it warms my heart seeing you saying all those kind words.
But you've forgotten one thing - don't take a cab in Prague. Most probably you are going to get robbed in a daylight and cabbies have their ways to actually make it legal. Use public transport - the net and usage of buses, trams and Underground is so sofisticated you'll get anywhere. Or Uber.

As a Czech person I gotta say you've done a phenomenal job describing the "don'ts". We are really easy going people and it's not hard to start a good conversation - as long as you're not a rude drunk or calling us Eastern Europeans 😂 Our history has some bad times with West and East, but we simply hate being compared to Russians. Great video! Love this city and wish more people knew how great it was. Lived in Prague for six months now and can't say enough good stuff about it! Really beautiful, easy to get around, great food, great prices and a fantastic location if you want to travel in more of Europe. As he said, it's right in the centre of Europe and there are some very good (and cheap) companies that will take you to other countries. I especially recommend looking at trains (like those by regiojet) to surrounding European countries, as the prices are very good. My last piece of advice is that while Charles Bridge is beautiful, you will do much better to go to the bridge either side of it. You will get great views of the bridge without nearly as many tourists and will certainly see more of the bridge than if you were on it (too many tourists to see much).

The last part when you said "don´t call the Czech republic an Eastern Europe country" is so true :D Also, don´t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. People usually know at least a little bit of English. Learn some czech words, it´s funny but also nice when somebody tries to speak czech. I am Czech and live in Prague and this is very accurate ! Never take taxis and if you want to take pictures move to side and do not randomly stop all of a sudden to take it, making people behind you have to walk around you or almost bump into you!!!

"Bramboraky" - potato pancakes are my favorites.
Tourists show up at 9 am on the dot. I woke up early to see the architecture and all the details on the each building. I recommend it, especially for Charles bridge and old town square.
Average spend on food:
Breakfast: €3-4
Lunch: €10
Nice dinner: €20

The restaurant prices have gone up but still reasonable mainly because of wages. First time went in 1992 only three years after the fall of iron curtain it was dirt cheap paid less for beer than bottled water I think that still stands.
Prague was absolutely beautiful. We spent 3 days.... about the service, it generally sucked yes. Especially at the airport, they need to improve on that. It's 2024.But I also recommend a trip to Karlovy Vary!
I advise you to visit Karlovy Vary and to drink their local thermal water from many different fountains. And also advise to visit Velká Amerika in Prague.
I love prague and we go there every year because my granny lives there and it is almost a second home to me and always get a hotel out of the city because the metro is fantastic

Try not to get ripped off, yep. I am Czech and the touristy part of Prague really is full of overpriced stuff. You can watch Honest Guide here, a Czech youtuber makes videos about how not to get ripped of in Prague (taxis, exchangeplaces, overpriced food etc.)
Also I hate that you are absolutely right about the services. I am currently working at the airport and so many colleagues are so rude/ unfriendly/ unhelpful to the tourists that I feel ashamed.

Definitely agree on the service. We would sometimes wait 20-30 minutes with empty drinks to get refills or get the check to pay. They never really smiled either. I still thought the city was lovely especially the St. Charles Bridge leading to St.Vitus Cathedral. Best tip you mentioned: get away from the crowds and explore away from the squares and bridge. We had fun exploring the small streets and walkways away from the tourist areas.

Mark, you must know that the Czech Republic is not only Prague and Krumlov. Small towns are wonderful like Broumov 15 km from my home. The rock city in Adrspach (Table Mountains) is gorgeous. If you want to get away from the crowds and see the mini Prage, go to Kłodzko in Poland.

I am healthy. I had in mind the stone bridge of Saint John similar to the Charles bridge in Prague. The town is historically in the Bohemia. The coat of arms of the city is a Bohemian lion with a double tail. You occasionally did not notice the new beltway. It is very sad that you limit yourself to bars with terrible food.

Prague is awe inspiring, the only issue I had was with those Euronet ATM's and currency exchange in general being a rip off. There are bound to be better deals if you look carefully.

@Club Soda my sister visited Rome, Italy when she was 18 years old and she said that most of the men there were creepy and even forcefull towards women ☹️ she was harrased and groped plenty of times (even from her private parts 😬) The mildest thing she experienced was cat calling. Many of the men there actually called to her like someone would call to their cats 🙄 she liked Rome otherwise but the way men acted there left a bad taste in her mouth 😥 (sorry for my English it isn't my mother language)

Really...beautiful city Praha...been there in october....best food in Europe...I guess you should have mentioned about not getting exchange from euro to kroner in old town square bcoz the rate there is astronomical... you can get better rates in less busy areas
Yes, Walter forgot to mention: Don't trust money changers and taxi drivers too much. Most of them won't try to rip you off, but it's better to count the costs in advance.
For exchange go to Kaprova 13 or Jindrisska street
It's better to avoid exchanging money and pay with your debit card. If you really need to, go to a regular bank, they usually offer more favourable rates
This year's Christmas Markets in Prague are just awesome!
It looks nice, but it is crazy overpriced compared to what you pay for. For example, you pay 3 times more for a trash wine in a tent than for a normal wine in a restaurant one street away. If you want to go to those countries especially for a christmas market, i would say Bratislava, Budapest, Krakow is a way better choice. Having said that, during a normal season, praha is the way to go.
It was avesome like every year, but my uni has buildings around Old towns squaire and it was impossible to not to be late for lessons in half an hour 😃
Christmas Markets in Budapest because winter is the best season to soak in the Baths. Rudacs is my favourite.

The best city I've been to, by far the best. Most beautiful, astonishing european architecture... There is some kind of feeling that you sense only in Prague and nowhere else, you sense it's power, rich culture and history. Been there like 7,8 times, every time is like different town and of course, different experience. Good experience only, honestly.
I was there a few weeks ago. People are very nice. Restaurant service was good. Food was excellent. It's a beautiful place to visit.

We received absolutely shocking bad service in Vytopna railway restaurant on the top floor in the mall.
They send the drinks you order to your table on a little train.
I ordered freshly squeezed orange juice and my husband ordered coke. We were super impressed and ordered some more drinks. The barman who was preparing the drinks came over to our table and said in anger that if we wanted juice then we should leave and go to the juice bar across the street.......
Prague, like the rest of Czechia, has always been in Central Europe. I am French, and I have always found Czech dishes good.
If you are deciding to visit Prague for a vacation I really recommend also trying to visit Brno if you got the time, it has a beautiful center like Prague but less crouded and way more outside statues and monuments

I was once in Prag for a shot trip. The City is so beautiful.
If you're a vegetarian, go to Italian restaurants or for lunch there's a buffet in the centre called Country Life which serves cheap, wholesome and healthy food.
Or just have an excuse to eat smažený syr everywhere.
Country Life is a vegetarian restaurant located close to Karlovo namesti, but there's more, look out for e.g. Gowinda (Hare Krishna cult's Prague HQ), a chain of vegan restaurants called Loving Hut, chain of food restaurants/minimarkets called Sklizeno (focuses on serving high quality local food) - both to be found all over the city, Vegg-Go restaurant at Andel, Veganland in Vysocany's business mall Fenix etc.
About the tipping. It's not about 10 % but mostly it's about to "round" the final cost. So for example if your dinner bill is 178 Kč, you could say you want to pay 180, 190 or even 200. Or hand over 200 Kč bill and say "that's fine."

Go in early May or late April. It's crowded by the end of May. Avoid weekends; try to arrive on a Monday or Tuesday.

I am czech, and i dont really care about this eastern/central/whatever europe, and i know the term "eastern europe" was used for the countries behind the iron curtain... but the iron curtain fell 30 years ago... It is like somebody in 1970 would say, that germany is still the third reich. So to be honest, i think this eastern/western/central thing now should be rather geographical than political ...

Do visit other quarters of Prague. The center is mostly for tourists. If you go a few tram stops (or walk for 15 minutes) in any direction you'll see quarters with nice historical buildings and it'll be a lot more local (and cheaper). (for example: Vinohrady, Letná, Žižkov, Smíchov, Dejvice...)

I wish I had played Bloodborne before visting Prague. When I was there nothing really in particular has caught my attention or was of interest for me but now that Im looking at old vacation pics I wish I had been more enthusiastic about this city. Especially the graveyard in the jewish quarter or the architecture of the buildings remind me so much of Bloodborne.
