    Thanks for the review, I think 35mm and 50mm Sigmas are my next 2 purchases, they are big but I used to own both for Canon and they represent great value for money, I was just waiting for the autofocus verdict and you are one of several people to confirm its pretty much spot on, Sigma are also quick to drop firmware updates if something goes wrong

    This is another in a long list of just exceptionally good lens reviews from Dustin Abbott. I use a 50mm prime lens almost exclusively for astrophotography, obviously in manual mode. I use much wider lenses for my Sony A7Rlll landscape work but if I needed a quality fast 50mm f/1.4 lens, I'd probably go for the Sigma Art 50/1.4 on a "best bang for the buck" basis.

      If the size doesn't offput you, it's hard to argue about the value of this lens.

    Great review as usual. You were a big help when I was considering the Tamron 24-70 & 70-200 f2.8 lenses for Canon. Great lenses so far. Now I come to this review in reverse order. I got a call today from a girl I used to work with at a pawnshop that a camera had come out. All she knew was that it was a Sony. I popped in and she hands me a Sony A7RII with the Sigma 50mm f1.4 on it. I wanted the A7RII when I was shooting only Sony APS-C cameras. The combined price on the A7RII and the Sigma lens was $800 total. I definitely put them in layaway. Love my Canon 6D with the Tamrons and will keep them. But looking forward to the Sony/Sigma combo. So this is a few years after the review, but I appreciate being able to see the comparisons and the real-world testing. Thanks again.

    splitting hairs is an understatement. it seems like whenever someone lays out top dollar for a lens. they really try hard to justify there purchase. I just don't think that one lens is better then the other as far as image quality, but if the Sony is better, it's 1% better if that. both lenses had there moments in your comparisons, but for me the decision comes down to price vs size and weight, saving around a 100 grams does mean something to me, and the fact that the Sony is shorter also, means it will be better balanced, and I got into mirrorless partially because of size and weight, and that is why I bought the Sony 55 f1.8 even though I have an adapter and already owned two other 50 f1.4 lenses. so size and weight matter to me, but I don't need another 50 lens. but if I did buy one, I would have to decide if I want to pay the cost difference of $550 dollars to save the weight and size. because if I was making a decision only because of image quality, I wouldn't be able to justify the Sony price.

      I am about to purchase my second lens, and that would be 50mm lens, do you think the Sony Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 is good lens to add to my focal length needs for street photography and general photography?

    • @photographerjonathan
      @photographerjonathan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have used it many times for street and general use, my Native glass is the 28f2 / 55 f1.8 and the 85 f1.8, all chosen to keep my kit small, I am very happy with all three lenses, the 85 is maybe the best bang for the buck FF lens that Sony sells, but the 55 has great image quality and the size and weight are perfect for an A7 series camera, it just doesn't have quite the background blur of f1.4. but in order to get the f1.4 you have to carry around like double the weight. so it's a trade off, and what's best in that trade off is up to you. but if you aren't going to be missing f1.4 to much. you will love the 55. but also remember it is slightly longer than 50mm

    • @christianvolkner2028
      @christianvolkner2028 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 55 is probably one of the most interesting 50ish lenses, because it is small, is very well build, has fast af, is as strong as the art and has a fair price on top of that. With 5mm extra even the Bokeh should be comparable:-)

    • @christianl.1039
      @christianl.1039 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking of getting the 85mm f/1.8 first before getting the 55mm f/1.8, do you think 85mm is a good lens to start with for street photography and a little bit of portrait. I like to try to shoot a little bit futher distance from my subject. You're right, f/1.4 would be a heavy for a mirrorless camera and intimidating for street photography.

    • @photographerjonathan
      @photographerjonathan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christian L. What other lens do you own ? I use both the 85 and 55 for street. But the 85 needs space. Only you know if its right for you or not. I can only tell you that the 85 f1.8 great lens for a good price. But if you own the A7r lll. You can get 18mp in apsc mode. So your 55 could be like an 85 and your 85 can be like a 135 when needed.

    looks like the sigma allows more light in, as per the info displayed on the top left corner of your test images. Sigma at 1/3200 shutter and the Sony at 1/2500 to get the same exposure. That is a huge benefit to the Sigma having the ability to have a faster shutter to work with.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

  • @juanmaasecas
    @juanmaasecas 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Sigma seems to be like 1/3rd of stop faster in actual light gathering. In pictures taken at the same speed, the sigma is brighter, and when you shot in aperture priority, the Sigma uses a faster shutter speed.
    Are the white balance values in Lightroom the same? Is the color difference corrected easily tweaking the white balance?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The white balance is the same, so it is difference in the glass or coatings

  • @EDCGadgets
    @EDCGadgets 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Dustin I love this review, but I would really like to draw your attention on the electronic FCS of the Sony cameras, which is extremely important for your bokeh tests!
    It varies camera by camera, but when you are using eFCS the bokeh will be extremely distorted over 1/1000 shutter speed, it will form bubbles and will be extremely unpleasing. (It is related to the sensor readout speed I believe)
    In this video, go to 14:09, and check the top right corner of the screen. That circles with fully mechanical shutter would be completely blurred.
    Please try this:
    - open up to 1.4, and set the shutter speed to something like 1/500 and take a "bokeh picture" on busy background.
    - now raise the shutter speed to 1/8000 (and the ISO, if needed, to match the exposure of the previous image) and take the same shot.
    Bamm, the background is completely different and unpleasing. This is the main reason why I sold my Sony system (and skintones..). I was just too annoyed keeping in mind, to switch to the loud mechanical shutter, whenever I went over 1/1000 during my portrait sessions....
    Basically you are throwing away all high quality bokeh when you forget to switch the shutter in daylight. So annoying.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually only use the silent electronic shutter in event settings, so this would have been taken with the mechanical shutter engaged.

    • @clawdawg7248
      @clawdawg7248 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dustin Abbott Is it really a downside? Sure, smaller would be nice, but the Art’s are no compromise lenses that handle themselves quite well against the Otus standard. Good optics at 1.4 are bigger and heavier. Since it’s understandably compared to the Zony 50 Planar I don’t understand the emphasis on its size when it’s only nominally larger / heavier than the Zony. Sure, there is the smaller / lighter 55 1.8....but, it’s 1.8.

    POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY, in their test of the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 ART, said, "...the original 50mm EX f/1.4, the Zeiss Otus lens, and the Nikon 58mm f/1.4G did edge it out slightly - "it" being the newer lens you test here. I'm hanging onto my older Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG EX, which is outstanding on my Canon 5d Mk II. In the August, 2015 issue, POP PHOTOGRAPHY said, "Sigma's older of the two lenses in this category still leads in our SQF tests, especially at larger image sizes. STANDOUT SPEC Sharpness and contrast ahead of all tested 50mm f/1.4s" Since the price of the Zeiss Otus is nearly $4,000, my "older" Sigma EX DG is a rare bargain indeed. It's worth noting that Pop Photo uses the DXO Analyzer 5.3. The ART lens did improve on distortion with 0.02% pincushion, as opposed to the EX's 0.21%, but neither is very noticeable in normal shooting. Also the EX is lighter, shorter and almost one-third the price of the ART model. Sometimes, a manufacturer takes two steps forward and one backward in attempting to improve on an outstanding product.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, I don't have a lot of trust for those results. I found the EX to be very, very disappointing optically, myself.

  • @warpspeed9877
    @warpspeed9877 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    To my eyes the Sigma lets a 1/3 stop more light (either the camera chooses 1/3stop higher speed or when in identical settings the Sigma image is a bit more bright). The planar has a cooler image with slightly softer bokeh. The performance difference justifies a 200 $ premium but not 500! That is half the price of another art lens!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are other factors as well (build quality, features, etc...), but I think others will share your viewpoint

    • @clawdawg7248
      @clawdawg7248 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      warpspeed Absolutely. The Zony currently requires a 65% uplift. Ridiculous. They’re both big, heavy, sharp, lenses. I’ve used both professionally and eventually sold the Zony after the surprising spot-on performance of the Siggy. Objectively, unless one is a heavy hybrid shooter, I don’t see how one can justify the price of the Zony.

I’ve heard version variation and right side softness is a real issue with the Sony. Anyway - can’t wait to see your always quality shoot out. Thanks again for the time you put into your reviews!

    Dustin, did you notice that this video was constantly focus breathing? I was really hopeful to use this for autofocus video but now am second guessing if the Sony 35mm 1.8 FE would perform better in Super 35 mode. Does the 50mm hold focus a bit better with face detect off and/or using other focus modes? Because of the wonderful bokeh I'm still debating buying it for primarily portrait sessions. Thanks!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm almost certain the Sony would work better for video. Remember that this lens wasn't originally designed for Sony, so you are essentially getting an adapted experience, which is the cause of the focus breathing. It might be less pronounced after the version 3 firmware update for the Sony a7 bodies or the V6 firmware for the A9

    Honestly it’s almost a little disappointing that the cheap Sigma can cope with every expensive lens. I sold my Canon Sigma with Perfect Focus for around 550€ on eBay 3 months ago. I’ve seen it selling for under 400€ at times on eBay, it’s crazy that you can get such a high performance lens at a price like this!
    On Sony‘s end I hear a LOT of sample variation. I’m not sure if it is true, but could it be that your test sample of the Planar was a better performer than the one you bought? I can guess they send only the best lenses for review right?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It would be the sharpest of those lenses at wide apertures. It is definitely better AF than the Samyang, and while it is a little noisier than the 1.8/55, focus speed is fairly similar.

  • @ConsumerFanatics
    @ConsumerFanatics 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Dustin, when you mention the focus throw, do you mean that it requires more turning of the focus ring to dial in focus? In other words, the focus ring is tuned more for precise focus or do you mean the other way around?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A longer focus throw is better for manual focus, as it allows more precision. The 50mm f/1.4 ART has such a tiny focus throw (range) at portrait distances that nailing focus is very difficult.

    need to mention the big difference for videographers between Sony's focus by wire and Sigma physical old-style focus ring... Focus by wire is a pain in the @ss as soon as you try to use manual focus and in many professional video recording situations you WANT to use manual focus, Sigma is more video friendly in my opinion.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes and no, depending on the lens. The 50mm f/1.4 ART has always had an extremely small focus throw that makes it hard to manually focus with precision.

    If I may ask another question. I like Sony 35 mm 1.4 but some professionals say that it has decentering problem. How do you think of this problem and how to find this decentering problem and test it? Thanks!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Decentering is easy to test for. Get a subject like a brick wall and make sure the camera is square on with the wall. Focus carefully, take the photo, and then see if both sides are roughly equal in sharpness. If one is noticeably softer than the other, first check your focus and make sure you are square with the target. If the softness on one side persists, the lens is decentered. Certainly not every copy of the Sony 1.4/35 is decentered, but some may be.

      Except for I’ve been shooting with the Canon 5D IV all week. While my reviews have been skewed towards Sony recently, that is mostly because I am behind with Sony reviews, and also because Canon releases have been rather slim this year
