To minimize light affecting longevity of dehydrated Veggies, Fruit... Ball offers Amber Colored Jars, a bit hard to find but available.... Another option is to cover jars with paper bags.
I read someplace that someone who goes camping with jars, they put old or new socks on them, so jars don't won't bang again each other, Plus you got clean socks.
Hi Darcy, so happy you're back and looking great! I can't say how much I appreciate your communication style! You are concise and clear, you speak quickly but clearly, with very accurate, consistent info. Somehow this is all comforting and encouraging, I enjoy all your videos. Thank so much --- you are my only (the only one I trust) dehydrating BFF, I'm a newbie since earlier this year, so happy I found you! Again I so appreciate it that you always answer my questions very promptly! God bless!
Thanks! I'm not back quiet, yet (these videos were pre-recorded so that there would be videos while I was on break), but can sit and answer questions, etc. And thank you for those kind words! YOU are doing all the work...so give yourself a big pat on the back!
Amazon sells outdoor waterproof blackout curtains 2 in a package. I'm measuring this weekend to buy curtains to hang over the front of all my shelves. That should add significant light reduction for my food.
Hi, Darcy. Glad you are feeling better. Keep healing! This message is in response to an earlier video of yours. You asked what we were using our dehydrated foods for. Using...using? I've been dehydrating them for storage, what if scenarios....all exxept mostly just onions. Then the epiphany came!!!!! Hey! I can use these and replace them!!!! Better than that....i can use some to learn HOW to use them...hahahaha. Soooooo.... i made a scrumptious kielbasa potato soup. My fridge carrots were no longer an option. Sooooo....i grabbed the dehydrated carrots i'd never used and my trusty onions. Hey!!!!!! I soaked the carrots for about 10 or 15 minutes in a little hot water and then tossed them into the soup. Guess what!!! (Oh, you already guessed! : ) they were just like "real" carrots!!!! I was so happily amazed! Watch out dehydrated corn; i think you're next : ) i cannot be alone in this : ) Darcy, THANK YOU!!!!
Good for you for doing that! It's really important to use our dehydrated food - to understand how they work and to rotate through them since they are not infinitely storable. Glad you found something that worked so well for you!
@ThePurposefulPantry Thank you so much. Thought you'd find that funny. Maybe others need to hear they need to practice with them also.... and they aren't just for what ifs...: ) Next I want to make some of your meals... soups... in a jar : )
Not back, yet...this was pre-recorded so that I could have some things going while I was off. I'm unofficially back this coming week to slowly get back into the groove.
Before I bought my Corsori dehydrator, I used an old Westinghouse round dehydrator that I bought many years ago. It didn't have a heat source that I could find. I learned to put my empty trays on the bottom to protect the food from getting over browned. I mostly dried paste tomatoes. Now I dry a lot of frozen mixed vegetables for us and our dogs. They like the crunchy green beans.
If I've mentioned this before on one of your posts, I apologize, but I think it bears repeating. One thing that happened with my vacuum sealed jars that I was not expecting at all happened when we had a tornado pass our house and I'm talking very close to our house. There was no damage, but it was within several 100 yards of our house. I don't even know if it actually touched the ground, but it was incredibly loud. I was checking doors and windows and concerned that they were going to pop out. As I got close to my pantry, I could hear ping after ping. My heart sank. Jars were unsealing. That was scary! After everything was over, I started checking jars. No conventionally canned jars lost their seal. And for some mystifying reason, only about 15 half gallon and gallon jars setting on the concrete floor unsealed. Other vacuum sealed jars setting only a couple feet higher and all the way to the top shelves didn't unseal. I sealed them back and counted my blessings.
If rings were on them, it wouldn't have mattered anyway ;) Yes, that huge pressure shift can do things, but the jars still would have been airtight with the lids. You would have been fine for the vacuum sealed jars.
Thank you, Darcy for clear, concise, & useful information. I am an infrequent dehydrator who appreciates a refresh - and you are a master of communicating accurate methods. xo
I didn't know about conditioning when I first stated dehydrating. Thank goodness I only had 3 jars that were ruined when I checked my stock. Thank you Darcy.
For your book shelf pantry, you could measure the width, depth and height of the shelves and cut cardboard to that size, bend it for the height of the shelf, slide it on top of the jars so that the front covers the opening. The shelves will be protected from light. As a bonus, you could put a list of the shelves contents on the front of the cardboard.
Hello Darcy, we all start and we all are not sure about many things, it's great that people, including myself can watch and learn. I have a question, can you over dehydrate? Looking forward to your reply.
I am brand new to dehydrating and really appreciate these tips. Looking forward to really using my Cosori dehydrator this year. I only did basil last year as I got it at the end of the season. I hope you are feeling much better and doing well ❤
Similar to the recommendation in another comment, to block light, obtain a tension rod (spring type curtain rod) which is sized for the inside of top shelf. Use curtain or sheet , slide on tension rod, allow to drape over all shelves. If that would retain too much heat within the shelves, you could put a normal curtain rod on the outside edge of top shelf which shelf.... that should hold the covering away a couple inches to allow for more air circulation. You can also do each shelf independently. Happy to see your videos. Hope your health is improving daily.
@@ThePurposefulPantry Please don’t rush it! Just keep walking and moving around. I found after surgery that it’s the best thing you can do for yourself! Take care my Dehydrating BFF (GURU)!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Hey nice to see you . I ordered a vacuum sealer on lone and I know shock it didn't work. I tried getting in touch with the company but I never heard back after many failed attempts. I had to chalk it up as a loss . I want to buy another one but don't want the same thing to happen. Could you please tell me which one I should buy . Thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful day.

The date on canned goods means nothing. If properly stored, they should last 2 to 5 years from that date. Manufacturers are required to put a 'best buy' date, which is usually about a year from production.
Darcy, hope the recovery is going to plan.❤ On blanching potato's, is it possible to blanche them whole before cubing them ? I think the answer will be a big fat no, but I really hate the time and heat of doing the blanching 🙂
Good point Lee. @ThePurposefulPantry . Darcy, could I scrub and foil wrap potatoes then bake them so they are steamed to avoid the harder outer skin/shell?
Welcome back and you are looking well. Also look like you have lost some weight. I think i know the amswer, but if I didn't seal the jars, but kept the lids on, do I need to trash or taste and keep. Some are 2 years old. Life got in the way. Thanks

My apple chip have gone a little chewy but still good, can I put them back the dehydrator to crisp them up. I want to take them on a 1500 mile bike ride.
I am new at this. I added a food desiccant packet in the jar of my dehyrated mushrooms. Is this okay to do? If so, should I vaccum seal the jar as well? Thanks
Yep! You can vacuum seal as well. Moisture absorbers control moisture that's been introduced into the jar - it should never be used to 'finish the job', and you can vacuum seal with one.
I purchased a dehydrator off marketplace. No name on machine or owners manual The temp ranges from 35 degrees to 90 degrees the owners does not give any times to dehydrate . Please help
I won't give you times to dehydrate, either. Things are done when they are done, not by when the timer goes off. 35C I'm assuming. If you join my newsletter, you'll get a temperature charge that I can't attach here. fantastic-maker-9968.ck.page/fab60be810
I don't want to do that, but thanks. I understand what happens, and rotate quickly enough that it's not a problem. Anything meant for longer term storage is in the dark pantry.
Just an idea for a future video... Maybe purposely create a jarful of underdried food to demobstrate the sticking or clumping you describe. Thanks for all the great videos!

All frozen veg is ready to dehydrate. You may want to thaw it a bit to cut down larger pieces to help it dehydrate faster and make rehydration easier.

What if we put some gas into the jar to avoid oxidation? CO2 for example.
If you can assure that all the Co2 is going to replace all the O2 - give it a go. But it's an expensive way to do it when it isn't necessary.
Hay Darcy, just put a blanket over the book case. Or use a cheap fancy shower curtain
