The fuel system is full of air. The manual plunger on the lift pump(white plastic head) is specifically there for filling up the injection system by hand which also clears out all of the air in the lines which happens any time the fuel system is opened up like changing filters. Always use the manual plunger to clear the lines and it will fire up on the first crank.
This is so much better then any of the other sites. A real education! Every time I have a question on my 1984 300CDT, I come right here and look at any one of these 25 part series and My questions are always answered!
did not think it would start without a traditional flywheel. the starter ring gear bolted to the crank shaft appears to be heavy enough to act as a flywheel. I'm learning more about the om617a.
Congratulations! I enjoyed this series. You really took the time to go over every step in this rebuild, including the inevitable mistakes and workarounds. Great job! I hope to hear it running on the road someday. Thank you.
I have really enjoyed your series. I'm starting a swap into a Toyota pickup and have been researching all I can find about the om617. This was Awesome because its the exact engine I purchased (116 950). Many thanks!
Can i ask you a couple q's... There's 2 contacts that screw into the block between the 1st and 2nd, 2nd and 3rd glow plugs. They seem to have terminals on the ends..can you identify? Mine came with glow plugs wired together but the first one disconnected so I'm assuming there was a harness on that one and i can just run a wire from it temp like you did. Also noticed there's 2 fuel lines cut, one from top of filter and one with a little sediment filter from the pump next to that plunger looking deal.. one feed one return? Both to the tank? Couldn't see the detail in your vid. I appreciate it brother! Also love the shop! Little jealous if I'm honest! 😄
this engine used in india with four cylinder, force motors Ltd used it,,, most reliable and low maintenance engine,, in best sales trax cruiser in India,, I'm almost drive 7.5 lack km,,, it's superb performance engine with Indian road conditions,,,,
@@woodsandbarclay I was worried my 300sd has a knock but now i realized after watching your video that its just the exhaust has a distinctive pomping sound at idle. Love these engines!
@@nitrofish1974 yeah these are amazing engines there's a reason they're known as the best built and longest running engines ever made. Something special happened at Mercedes in the late 70s and early 80s.
Greetings from Russia. The video tutorial turned out to be excellent. I looked with great pleasure and learned a lot for myself. I also have a bulkhead of the same motor. Hotnl ask, do you have a Servis Manual in electronic form? And if there is, could you send it to me by mail?
Man I honestly don't remember that was several years ago. Just remember if you're not sure use a thicker gauge. But for the battery to starter hookup you definitely want a super thick 0 gauge (I think that was the gauge I used). Otherwise the amps required to turn that starter will just fry the wire and the starter won't be able to crank the motor.
If you go on my website there's a spreadsheet you can download that shows my exact parts cost for this. This was not a rebuild it was a crankshaft repair and the bearings and rings were replaced. If you want a complete rebuild on one of these engines it'll run you around $10,000. I was able to do the crankshaft repair, bearings and piston rings for around 3500 bucks including all the special parts and tools. Added in my labor and sold the engine for 5000
@@woodsandbarclay Oh I see I was just using title in the video "Rebuild". Understand now but all the stuff you did for a lay person look like a total rebuild. haha

Yeah I actually did it exactly how it was specified in the om617 service manual. The method I used was written down by the engineers ;) thank you for watching my series I appreciate the compliments I'm watching the video link you sent now.
The w123 and w126 actually have the exact same engine. The om617 5 cylinder diesel. This one actually came out of a 116 chassis, a 1980 w116. That was also the same engine. ;)
@@woodsandbarclay w126 engine has a electric oil sensor and torque dampers on the motor mounts the turbo charged version had the new mount for the manifold
Yes but it is still the exact same engine. The om617 turbo diesel. Their were small changes like the addition of electric oil sender over the years but the engine is the same. Now if you're talking about accessories that attach to the engine yes lots of little modifications were made as the years went along.
Am I rebuilding an engine? No.
Did I watch ever episode? Yes.
