    Never before have I heard Rachmaninoff's piano pieces played to such beauty and perfection; as well as, with such precision, technical prowess, minute attention to the score and sonorous dynamics. I am absolutely spellbound by Maestro Pletnev's titanic genius and consummate musicality. Bravissimo Maestro Mikhail Pletnev!

    I first came across Pletnev when he played the Bach concerto for 4 pianos with Argerich, Kissin and Levine. He has steadily grown on me, and more than with any other pianist I experience him as a 'careful' interpreter, both as a pianist and a. Conductor, not in the sense of somebody who doesn't take risks, but as somebody who is literally 'full of care" in that he gives me the feeling that he is respectful of the music like a curator hanging a Rembrandt painting. He creates a feeling of awe.

    Pletnev has always been great with infallible fingers and all that. I haven't heard much of him recently until these youtube recordings. What a treasure! His interpretations are extroardinary, unique, and so heartfelt. This playing is as good as it gets. He truly has something to say. His recent Chopin Preludes here are amazing too. I've heard these pieces hundreds of times before but these stand out so. Right there with Sokolov, Bolet, Cherkassky, etc. He is like a fine wine getting better with age. Piano playing doesn't get any better than this.
    Thanks for putting this up.

      If the only sin in musical performance is to be boring, then Pletnev qualifies as both a saint and angel -- certainlh a paragin of virtue at the very least. He may perplex at times, but he NEVER turns you to stone with boredom. It's impossible to be indifferent to his playing, it's so astonsihingly ALIVE. Tha alone makes him a magnificent artist.

    42 thumbs down votes for this magnificent playing? Those people must have tin ears! For once the famous c# minor and g minor Preludes sound like real music instead of the usual banging bombast; there are so many piano players today, but Pletnev is a MUSICIAN whose imagination and technical mastery leaves all others in the dust; his only worthy contemporary is young Aleksandr Malofeev, another phenomenon.

    Pletnev is one of the last musicians who understand what interpreting music is all about: to look beyond the notes and feel the process of composition.this means to be creative and listen to yourself rather than reproduce the notes. Pletnev's art is an art which is sadly lost since more than 70 years because of machinery, recordings, and incorrect information about historic performance practices.

      that's exactly what I think. the Elegie is the piece which Horowitz played in front of him when he visited Moscow, Pletnev's transcription of Nutcracker impressed Horowitz so much that he told him there were only two persons in the world could play this score, you and me.

    • @steveegallo3384
      @steveegallo3384 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, Pletnev's 'Nutcracker' is torrential. As for 'being creative,' check out how Lang-Lang opens The 2nd Concerto!

    Some of this playing is absolutely sensational. Take the central section of the G minor prelude. the voice leading within chords is an example of his total mastery and control. Some of the distortions of tempo here and there in works does not retain musical tension sometimes. But hey, so what ! There is so much quality and creative imagination in play, it's sounding like a master improvising..

Fearlessly subjective yet always interesting, a few of the pieces are too much for me but at least deeply thought-out - and breathtakingly beautiful. The Rachmaninoff First Sonata is getting played more often in recent years.

      For real!!! ... I never heared that etude op. 39 /7 in that very colorful and mystic kind!! Realy a new look about the "material"...(.even very freely played....)
      The beginn of that Pletnev- concert I dont like: special Elegie is very mannered...no natural large phrases...(what Volodos knows to make so naturaly and wonderful ! ) Also the Preludes op.23 for my tast (!) I heared "better" ((more expressiv and clearly and just what was written by Rachmaninow ! ) many years ago by the young Andrej Gawrilow!
      The sonata is crazy....very impressiv and phantastic the 2. mov.!!! Amazing! ....! Thank you again for posting here... You have always the best news here...THANX! :-)

      anja woschik -All the pianists you've mentioned belong completely to 21st century ( when I say that I mean the trend to standardize the playing as much as possible, to play literally what's written in the text. ). By contrast, Pletnev's art belongs to 19th century when it was normal for pianist to be co-author of what he plays, the piece was created in your eyes and the next time it could be played absolutely another way. And if you listen carefully to Rakhmaninov's records of the same pieces only then you'll understand what I mean.

    Thanks for uploading , I have a personal question for you ADGO, if you have to pick one ,who’s ur favorite artist, sokolov or pletnev ?

    • @ADGO
      @ADGO  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose it depends. I've felt more intense and lasting experiences in recital with Sokolov. I've also heard him more though. However these days in recordings I listen to Pletnev more often.

    Мы забываем, что влюбленность
    не просто поворот лица,
    а под купавами бездонность,
    ночная паника пловца.
    Покуда снится, снись, влюбленность,
    но пробуждением не мучь,
    и лучше недоговоренность,
    чем эта щель и этот луч.
    Напоминаю, что влюбленность
    не явь, что метины не те,
    что, может быть, потусторонность
    приотворилась в темноте.

    @Edwin van den Berg: Hi Edwin pleased to meet! I try to explain, my english is very simple... I firmly believe the only aim of a player, better, of an honest artist, is to play in service of revealing the treasures hidden in the works of the composers we love. I think only few are really capable of that: Pletnev, Sokolov, Hamelin, Hough do it best, between the living ones. Of course we can appreciate a particular interpretation even played by a "unknown" not famous player everywhere in the world, but the named's "average" way of read the works is greatly revealing. In particular, speaking about this all-Rachmaninov recital by Pletnev, I think his choice to take a distance from the showing-off way we too often listen in concert halls, to put our attention strictly into the textures and architecture of the works as they were "chamber music", in a sort of chopinian sense of composing, even in the large scale first sonata (that I love much more than the 2nd), put new light non only to thye pieces he choose to play, but to the way we could play Rachmaninov in general terms. And if we add to this Pletnev's unique, magistral care of the minimal nuances of sound in every bar... the result is a magical experience, I was in a state of trance, as I was expecting to be. No more the same music lover, the same Rachmaninov connoisseur I was before. As I am used to say, such giants of music playing, beside one can like or not, could be "judged" not by good-evil category, their playing, their way of rethinking the works is not beautiful or not beautiful, it is necessary. Hope I could explain... All the best to you. Fabio
