A American collector who has I think a mk 11 recon Spitfire has said its a ton lighter than a P51 and has a tighter turning circle. It only has a short range compared to the p51 . Take your pick.

Dambuster I did read somewhere....might have been Geoffrey Quills book....that as the war developed, choices had to be made , and that the Spitfire could have been developed for longer range , but by then the Mustang had been re-engined and developed, such that there was no point in duplication of effort.

As a piston-engined air superiority fighter, the Spitfire was better - if you compare like with like ie; a P51D/Spit' IX. For long-range escort duty, the P51D was the better machine. Horses for courses......
