Two DIY RV Tips I Wish I Knew Sooner!

  • Today I wanted to share a couple of tips. The tips are from Jason at "How To RV"
    I wanted to share these because I was talking to Jason about a mod he had done on his 30 amp RV and I thought it was a great idea for those with 50 amp RVs as well. It should help you take care of your RV Electrical and give you the information to stop tripping the 30 amp breaker in the RV or at the campground. If you would like to check out his channel you can find it here.

    Be aware that installing on the neurtal will monitor the total current draw of the RV when the 2 legs are connected to the same leg of a 120V/30A. So it gets you what you want. But when you're on a 240V/50A connection, the readings will be meaningless since the neutral only carries balance current in a 240V system.

    My Hughes Power Watchdog surge protector app shows me the loads on each leg of the 50A and will also keep track of total power used. Very handy and with it hardwired in it is always there.

    Hi Jarred.
    I am a 64 year old solo full-time RVer for about 20 years now. I just had to hop in the comments to say I Rarely understand anything you share with us.
    I have no Solar, and wish I could finally know the difference of an inverter and a converter!!😁
    Happy Trails🚍

    • @NTM2009
      @NTM2009 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Inverter takes DC voltage (battery power) and turns it into AC voltage (household power) to power regular household appliances when there is no AC power available (not plugged into campground power pole). A converter does the opposite and takes AC power from campground and converts it to DC power to charge your batteries

    • @kavitadeva
      @kavitadeva 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaryWehmeier hi Mary. Thank you for your reply. How long have you been full timing in an rv? Anyways yeah I've been on TH-cam forever I know there's all kinds of tutorials but when it comes to all the installation and the wiring and figuring all that out I just don't have that kind of brain. I am an artist and I just can't think the way I would need to when I'm looking at a owner's manual that you have to put something together. Also I've been doing it 20 years so it was a little bit tongue in cheek. I must know something right because I've been able to do it 20 years and most of the time I would say 90% has been boondocking so I don't know maybe I'm old fashioned because I still use a generator when I need you to pump up my batteries and I have either an inverter or a converter that I plug into the 12 volt and it gives me electrical and that's about it. I really thank you for encouraging me on that it's a fun learning process but for me it has never been a fun process at all, I don't know why. I would love to know how long you been doing this and if you're enjoying it and where have you been stuff like that if you feel like sharing. Thanks again.

    I've had the power monitor mounted on our 30 amp trailer a few years. Very enlightening. We now run the water heater on gas during a/c season

  • @stevekight1955
    @stevekight1955 ปีที่แล้ว

    Putting the monitor on the neutral will only work right if the trailer is plugged into a 30 amp circuit. If you have the monitor on the neutral conductor plugged into a 50 amp service, it will only show the unbalanced load. For example, if one leg draws 22 amps and the other leg draws 6 amps, the neutral wire will only carry the difference, i.e.16 amps (22a - 6a = 16a. ) That's the way it works with 2 hot legs and a neutral. A 30 amp service neutral will give the same amp reading on the neutral as it does on the hot leg.

    The 2018 Jayco Alante we purchased last fall has an energy monitoring system built in that monitors the power and turns off the 2 AC’s and other appliances when it needs to. It also shows the amp draws on the system. This is a 30 amp system. I did install a battery monitor like you showed in earlier videos. It works great! Respectfully, Kevin

    Help,lol. I am converting to lithium ion and have heard it mentioned many times that you can put those batteries inside along with the converter/inverter/charger but I’m still concerned about the heat generated and no one is giving any real data on it. If you have an opportunity can you do that in a video? I have a toy hauler so my storage is very limited and wanted to put my new electric system under my bed area so I need to know what kind of heat could be potential coming off of these components. Thank you and I love your channel.

I have asked the question to my dealer and they can’t help me. My idea. Thanks

    Jason, wouldn't a Progressive Industries EMS 50A unit offer this same info, with its digital display likely being inside the RV given how it's installed. Same protection functionality as your Power Watchdog but its permanently internally mounted and no need to find your smart phone when another family member needs to check current draw.

    • @chriscarter7182
      @chriscarter7182 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a similar 2 filter setup. I've made a fixturing board that is fastened to the floor in my storage bay, adjacent to the city water connect that the double filter mounting bracket is bolted to. I have the pressure regulator attached to the filter assembly AFTER the water has passed thru the filters, which is then connected to the city inlet of the rv. I have full pressure shore water pressure thru the filters, then it's regulated to 55psi prior to entering the rv plumbing. All of this, and it's fairly compact, is inside my storage bay, where I don't have to worry about freezing. (I have Frankensteined a small heater to keep my storage bay above freezing temps). I was in a camp site and my neighbor camper asked me one morning if I had water!?! I had water because I had been running on my fresh water storage. My hose was frozen solid, my filters and regulator were safely warm and patiently waiting for the hose to thaw.

    Very interested in the Victron MultiPlus and Magnum MSH series . Not sure it would work in my situation. I am in a seasonal rv site but I have only 30 amp plug. (But i really only have 20amp ) I tried a 25amp break but still trip my main break that is locked away. I need a device that only pulls 20amps but can power assist to 30,40 or maybe 50amp. Can the magnum be set to only pull 20amp.

    • @jimegan7077
      @jimegan7077 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Victron Multiplus would definitely work in this situation. You can adjust the amount of shore power the Multiplus is allowed to draw. I have a Onan 5500 watt generator that can - according to the specs - produce about 45 amps. I'm rarely on a pedestal so I have adjusted my Multiplus to pull more than the typical 30 amps. Should I be on a pedestal, I adjust the Multiplus down to 30 amps so I don't blow the breaker on the pedestal. It can be adjusted lower than 30 amp if needed. The Multiplus is a great inverter/charger. It will also do Power Assist.
