The crazy part about the cats that run this, it's all passion. There's so many privateers that run this race. The winnings are £18,000 and that doesn't cover the cost it takes to get to the TT. It's one reason sponsorships from people that can spare to do it or getting picked up by a team is so important for many. Love the fact y'all were able to react to this and get it up on yt.

This is the film that kickstarted Guys TV presenting career. Some of the top riders are known by their town of origin and whatever fast projectile starts with the same letter, Connor Cummins is "The Ramsey Rocket", John McGuiness is "The Morecambe Missile", and Ian Hutchinson is "The Bingley Bullet". Although a lot of people now call Ian "The Flying Hutchman". Incidentally, he raced the next two TTs with that cage round his leg.

This is one of my favourite sports films, I saw it on it's release in the cinema and loved it. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Road Racing means so much to us here in Ireland and all over the world also, but here in Ireland it holds a special place in our hearts.
I think you pretty much understand now what a hero Guy Martin is to the Brits. He has a massive cult status there and he is even granted honourary 'Paddy' status over here. lol
The real star of this show, for me, was Mrs Dobbs. what a fantastic attitude and example to her children.

Surprisingly alot of the riders do play the video game to learn the course, the TT game is made with the input of the riders on bike physics to make bike handling as realistic as possible and the circuit is laser scanned so every little bump, dip, jump, Kerb, pothole etc are as they are on the real course.
Some riders have admitted they use it the learn where the dips, bumps and jumps are and to push over the limit in game to find a limit months before they get there, then that limit is adjusted every race meet leading up to the TT so when they arrive on the island they have their riding limits and practice week is to make them last minor tweaks to bike setup and boundary limits.

You talk about a NASCAR driver who had a cigarette lighter in his car. Barry Sheene, a motorcycle road racer in the '70's and '80's, had a hole drilled in his helmet so he could have a cigarette as soon as he finished a race.

Have you guys seen the documentary called “ROAD” ?
It’s about the Dunlop road racing dynasty. Joey “the king”, his brother Robert, (also a very talented rider), and Robert’s two sons, William & Michael, all of them road racers/TT regulars.
It’s a brilliant thing. Narrated by Liam Neeson.
    Thanks, from Belfast NI. ☘️✌️

The thing that still blows my mind with the TT, is when someone wins an F1 or MotoGP race, you won't hear about the winner going back to their plumbing or mechanics job the following week! Do 180+mph inches away from stone walls on the Friday and then back to fixing leaky tap washers on Monday.... wild!

    • @rickybuhl3176
      @rickybuhl3176 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The cynic in me says that as long as they keep it 'for the plumbers' and not the playboys, we'll be allowed to keep it. Once a sponsor loses their 60 million dollar baby, we could lose it to some committee of soccer moms.

Went to the TTin 1967 for the Diamond Jubilee , saw my hero , Mike Hailwood , a 14 times TT winner , who i consider the greatest rider ever . Did the course at a sedate 30mph on a bus . Sadly Mike was killed along with his daughter in 1980 by a truck making an illegal turn .the son survived . He was taking them to buy fish and chips . 🇬🇧

    • @theant9821

Hailwood has to be no.1 for me, to win 12, have 11 years off and return to win 2 more, he still had what it took to win.
11 years of what ifs, thats a lot of races he never started, while still having what it took to win inside him.
The greatest sporting comeback ever in my opinion.

You said about fitness etc . . . Back in the late 1990s until 2003 when he died in a crash during TT practice there was a rider called David Jefferies. He was no lightweight at around 220 lbs but was very fast and the real star of that era. The belief was that his physic helped him muscle the 1000cc bikes around the TT course which is very bumpy and requires more physical strength than circuit racing.

I am 75 and my wife is 73 and we ride our motorbike nearly 4 days a week and have done just in the last 3 years, 90,000ks and had a few close calls but apart from being hit by a car not much drama. Riding motorcycles is different but it seems that once the leg is thrown over the saddle and that engines purrs you are in the zone and its a whole new experience each and every time and we really don't know if we will come back from the ride but wont stop. Tin top drivers have no idea of the high we get from leaning into a corner, foot peg scrapping the tarmac, elbows and knees just off the ground and then straightening up for the next bend, heaven.

If you watch carefully, Guy's front suspension was clearly garbage in that last race. The fact that he pushed it like he did was insane. Being a mechanic himself, he had to know it wasn't going to hold. At least he wasn't badly injured.
Also, if you get a chance, you should look up John Hinds. He was one of the race doctors (the green bikes with the M where the number should be) for the Isle of Man TT for many years until tragically wiping out and dying one year. He basically pioneered the mobile units who followed behind racers at intervals so quick aid could be rendered. He and his crew were responsible for saving many lives. There are some documentaries around about him. They give an interesting view of the race from the medical side of things.

We have property on the 11th milestone, just after the Cronk-y-Voddy straight. Beautiful place. The documentary really may Guy Martin a household name - and his subsequent TV career. Local lad Connor Cummings - ever loved. Soft spoken Ian "Hutchy" Hutchinson - and a very special record with the horrific end of year! New average lap was broken this year - 136.358mph by Peter Hickman - the 130 club just grows. They all came back and raced again - Hutchy had to have modification made - but he won more. Nice one lads.

1:11. the course is public roads so you can ride or drive it any time of year but it is 2 way traffic. However during the TT fortnight there is a day called Mad Sunday where the course is open for anyone to drive or ride along in its one way race format. Outside of the towns or at least on the mountain section there is no speed limit and this is where non racers get killed riding beyond their limits. Very few spectators have been killed by crasing race bikes.

The first speed limit set in the US was only 6 years earlier, in 1901 in Connecticut, and that set the limit as 12 mph…
Given that in 1908 you had the Model T that could only manage about 35 mph anyway - almost double the 1907 20 mph limit but still not hugely fast, but I’m sure it felt incredibly fast to contemporary drivers

When you look on confused at the 20mph speed limit. You have to realise everything was defined by the speed of a horse. These machines were mind blowing. At first you could only drive them if a man walked ahead with a flag. The average person had zero perception or experience of speed and thought if you went too fast your face would be torn off. That wasnt the lowest speed limit. When Mr Benz made the first car, it triggered the 1865 “Red Flag Act” Speed Limit of 4 mph. (2mph in the cities!!!)

Entirely natural to fear the worst when one hears that a rider is missing. It's a great and thrilling race, but those words instil all sorts of fearsome emotions in, well, everyone.

Playing the TT game could be good for your channel if you haven’t already Spencer, didn’t know about the third one but the first is definitely better than the second

Lived on the island for 35+ years and the races often get cancelled and have done for a long time if its bad conditions.
Rain, fog or even damp patches from previous rain will cancel a race. They will always try postpone the race to the next available free slot/day, but if the conditions are still bad then it just keeps getting pushed backed and the race events will be shortened to fit them in on what remaining days they have left.
It happened before a couple of years a go where a lot of the races that were planned for the final Saturday due to bad weather during the week were just cancelled completely because of bad weather on Saturday too. Pretty huge bummer when it happens for everyone involved obviously, especially those that have traveled a long way to see it.
I think on average though, I'd say its very rare that bad conditions cancel so many of the races and generally each year the weather is pretty good. This year (2023) for example was literally perfect every day. it didn't rain for 2 weeks and there was only some fog on the mountain on 1 or 2 days I believe. Its years like this that records are broken because the roads have had 2 weeks of rubber being laid and not getting washed away with the rain. Same thing happened in 2018 I believe, when the 135mph avg barrier was broken for the first time.

I WANT TO MAKE THIS CLEAR
    TO ME
milky quail is as much of a legend to me as any of the others
Cares for the riders so much not wanting them to have the same race fate that he did
Him just walking round removing stone is done from such a level of respect to the other riders
There must have been times he could have easily resented them and gone another way
    What a hero

These media people have got to remember how much adrenaline is pumping through his veins after a race, and the disappointment of not winning the suddenly someone shoves a mic in your face and asks you some stupid questions.

You need to look up the humble LEGEND that was Joey Dunlop.. (any older footage of a rider with solid yellow helmet with a black stripe up the middle is Joey)
He and his family are road racing royaly.. and tragically more of them have died riding than are left riding. :(
If you think you have to be super fit and train to be successful.. there are the exceptions
You won't be disappointed.. the man is up there with McRea and Senna relative to his sport.
The NW 200 is once per year and is racing wheel to wheel and they race to win..
It is used as a testing session by some but most are out to win both the NW and the IoM.. Many of the IoM entrants are from Irish road racing series.
You can drive all road race courses.. they are just public roads, like rally.
More to the point, the IoM has unrestricted speed limits outside of the town / villages, so you can do a pretty hot lap too.. Just beware of cutting corners and dangerous driving is an offence.
It's not just Ego, it's comming straight off the hottest of laps with all that adrenaline, emotion and the rest..
And a bit of guy being guy.
Rain is raced in.. Rain heavy enough to cause flowing water or too much standing water isn't
