Going OFF the GRID - this is how BOAT LIFE should be [EP 99]

  • Well this is what boat life is meant to be like! We set off from Morne Rouge in Grenada to Rhonde Island, a remote and uninhabited island north of the mainland. After last week's cutless bearing scare (check out the video here: ) we're trying to use our engine a whole lot less (we are a SAILBOAT after all!) so we get our sails up and make the 20 mile bash against the current (Adam explains how you can check for this too prior to heading out for a sail).
    We arrive in the dark and when we wake up we get to experience the beautiful island, the snorkelling and beach bonfires that come with being off the grid!
    We hope you enjoy!

    Rope is rope around a boat until it's put to work, serves a purpose, then it's line. You hear "dock line," "spring line," and more specifics from there - halyard, sheet, rode... Yeah, sailor talk is fun.

    Spending 2 nights on the hook at Ronde Island was the highlight of our Grenada adventure. Amazing snorkeling and an unspoiled beach! Our stay was cut short when we had to make our way back to the marina before the island was locked down due to the pandemic. The second highlight of our trip was when I got to meet Khiara after spending a few hours queuing for the grocery! Cheers, guys! Thanks so much for all the wonderful content, and for fulfilling the dream of adventure for those of us who have yet to break free from the monotony of a desk job.

    An engine needs to run at operating temp about 45 minutes to evaporate the moisture that becomes trapped in the oil. Short runs just put more condensation in the oil. Over time this equals shorter engine life. Don't worry so much about the engine. Just run it and watch the temp and pressures along with the cooling outflow. As you normally would. You are making short trips from anchorage to anchorage and can sort it out if you have an engine problem. Engines don't last forever. They are there to be used. Doc

    Hoist mainsail and secure around centreline with the rudder free, then go forward and lift anchor while boat slowly sails towards windward (anchor position). Boat should keep luffing up to wind, drop off a little and then luff up again. Can be done solo, no motor, no anchor winch. Cheers.

    My understanding of diesel engines is once started, they liked to be run for a long time and under load. That's why truck drivers leave their trucks running when they are sleeping or catching a meal at a restaurant. Perhaps the marine diesel is different but you might be doing more harm than good when running your diesel motor sparingly to get underway from anchorage.

    The first mate on that boat is in such fine shape. Wow. I would never ever even think of complaining about life if I was where you are and with such a fine woman . The engine could be as loud as a sonic boom right beside the boat and I would just smile and say What a fine day . Seriously I am stuck in an apartment in a city . I am from the countryside small village so walking in a forest or next to a stream with the dogs running about having a blast was my life but now I am trapped here. Still I think at least I am in a nice building with a million dollar view of Lake Ontario and beyond . So I try to think positive. I sure would like to be where I can just jump off my home into the sea and if I want just move to another spot and look at something different. You made me think of people who are at their cottage now except you can just move your cottage around the world. You two are blessed. I just wonder about Adam and what happened to his desire to work on rockets and space travel . Does he work things out on paper or the computer regarding such matters or is he now totally wrapped up in the sailing ?

    @cambsmedic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Minor engine vibrations/changes in sound are probably nothing to worry about too much especially given the special coupling you installed means that the side loads of any shaft problems shouldnt be transferred to the engine. However, two things to consider that maybe you haven't tried. The curve of the hull fore aft can be affected by either backstay or mainsheet tension as these pull and bend the hull very slightly when on max tension. So consider experimenting with sound of engine at different degrees of mainsheet and backstay tension and if the variation is that then you know what the cause is and then you know not to worry about it. Also, at one point you thought you might have a bent shaft but I don't know if you ever proved/disproved that and that can be hard to do with the shaft in the boat as it can deflect slightly just under it's own weight if not evenly supported. But shafts can become bent due to ropes wrapped around props, etc, so consider checking that on next routine haul out...

    Don’t fret about a few vibration. Every boat vibrates, remember a car can dissipate vibration to the ground , a boat has nowhere to send them. Them only thing worst could be an aeroplane. I had a mate who was a vibration tester on ships and he said even ships have a section marked on the tacho where the operators have to get through as quickly as possible. Below or above this revs the engine is fine , in the wrong rev range it can damage the engine or even the ship. So just enjoy your boat. Worse case do the Kodak method. (See what develops) Ps When I’m on the boat I just can wait to fill the wind sails and turn the iron sail off.

    Running diesel engine for short period of time at low load is really tough on the longevity of the engine. Low load and short runtimes mean the engine never gets to operating temps. Doing it regularly will lead to headaches down the road. I get that puts you guys between a rock and a hard place but trying to "baby" the engine is actually brutally hard on the engine. Might want to talk to a marine diesel mechanic.

    I see you're using your 43 for the main halyard in cockpit. What size are your coach top winches? If your motor mounts are OK and the sigma is not loose I wouldn't worry too much about drive train noise. You have the auto prop? That by itself can be noisy. I have a flexofold and a sigma. Runs whisper quiet. Even if you change the cutless bearing the prop may still make some wonky sounds. Turn up the radio. Worry about something else.
    Short engine runs are bad for it. If possible let it run about 20 minutes and make sure you rev and hold for 30 seconds before shutting down. Helps keep carbon from building up in the mixing elbow and in the combustion chamber.

      I do some work around mid size (500kVA to 3MVA) diesel gensets. The fastest way to trash a big diesel is the "15 minute once a month no load test", just to make sure it still starts. I have personally seen one that was a smoking wreck with just 80 hours on the clock, after several years of that treatment. It had been the standby genset for a data centre, and had only ever run at full load when first commissioned. Small high speed diesels are a bit more tolerant I think.
