So nice of you to fund raise for the Legion! What a camping experience..the ground is like a wet sponge. It really gets windy. It’s all wide and open exposed to the elements. You made it through the night without any strange occurrences..only a moist bivvy and the tarp seams held up. Good timing on leaving Take care ❤️🇨🇦🌧️
Great video. I've got a grey one and been using it all year on Dartmoor and Snowdonia. It's brilliant! I replaced the lines with 2mm and they were good until 50mph winds and then they slipped a litttle. Am now going for 3mm which should be bombproof. Also learnt to plant the front pole right way up as mine slipped in high winds the other way around. After a second tensioning after sunset, you can go drum tight and sleep in peace.
Cheers buddy. I've bought some (I think 3mm 🤔) guy out lines so hopefully will stop the slippage. Haven't had a chance to use it again since though. Too many others to test out 🤣👍
@@NoviceWildCamper Best way to learn is to get out there. 😁I hope my first go is a bit smoother. Looks like the bivy you have is one of the waterproof types. Looks very easy gather condensation. There are more breathable types that are made to be paired with tarps. In those conditions everything would get damp anyway though.
@NoviceWildCamper you can't beat them Mike. You know I love a bivi camp more than the next man. Had many over the years and the Army one's are the best. Take a beating and keep you warmer than others such as Alpkit etc
Came across your channel while scrolling well got to say your brave am watching you at min on my TV. Was thinking American warewolf. Then you said it yourself. Thank you for keeping myself and my daughter scared for you. But excellent videos. Stay safe. Watch out for escaped prisoners. Been camping once I swear never agsin . but keep doing what you love 👍Angie
Thanks Angie, glad you enjoyed it. I'm currently laying in my hot tent for the first time with a wood stove. Video will be up Friday if you've got nothing else to do 🤣👍
@@NoviceWildCamper I will be watching . just one question . why did you go back to that place with the handprints and a dodgy dogwalker. That was terrifying and the howling. Oh god Dog soldiers came to mind. Stay safe and thanks for amazing video
@AngieGrace12 I wanted to see if anything happened again and was more prepared this time. I tried to get friends to go but they kept chickening out so gave up and went alone. A lot of people think I faked it but I don't do those sorts of videos. 99% of my vids are uneventful wold camps but occasionally some wierd things happen 🤷🏼♂️😬
I once put a survival blanket over my down quilt as I was worried about condensation from the tent & could not believe how quickly the quilt got damp. That has put me off putting anything over my sleep system. Some people swear by those bivy bags though. 🤷♀. think i might give the tarp a try...in the middle of summer
For high wind conditions, if you have the room, extend the guylines that are taking the wind load to their maximum so the tensioners are no longer a factor. (Provided the pegs hold :) )
Good idea. Although I had shortened them as the wind was coming under when they were longer. May habe been a pitching issue though as first time but will have a look. I've heard these guy lines slip through the tensioners and it's better to get thicker ones so may try that too. 👍
U picked the best weather for first time.bivy and tarp camp ha i didnt no montane did a smock similar to the buffalo shirt, ive got thr buffalo shirt , really warm smock abit overkill for our weather unless its below the minus , hopefully u be back out in the tarp soon but better weather ha 👍👍
Bit of an artform to setting up the Trailstar but once you get used to it, it goes up in no time. I use mine year round. That front beak looked very loose mind.
Some good info there mate. Been thinking about this type of tarp....... Surprised at the level of condensation in the bivy bag.....maybe try another type and see if its better? Army surplus are decently priced.
Cheers Gary. Yeah I just don't think the oex is as breathable as they say. Been looking at the army ones but my first choice was the alpkit hunka xl and should have gone with it. I went with the oex as someone was supposed to send me one to use that night but they didn't so had to buy something on the day. Waste of £50 🙄
Delta pegs for the load bearing guy lines, goretex bivvy bag for breatheability/minimisation of condensation inside; is your quilt down (Ice flame, or flames creed?) or synthetic? 👍🏻🏴🥃
The pegs never budged, it was the guy lines that slipped out of the tensioners amd yes I'm looking at goretex for the next bivvy. The flames creed quilt is down which is why I was so surprised it kept me warm and dry being so wet on the outside. 👍
I received my Tarp from ALX too. Just wonder why they want the black reenforced patches on the outside. Or the line locks are in the wrong side. Is this on your Tarp too?
Nice review. There is a flames creed Tyvek sleeping bag cover that would have been good to review that night. From the other reviews I read it breaths relatively well and there is very little condensation. I have a MLD Patrol tarp clone from the same company and it has performed good. However, to use it in storms with a very low pitch is highly uncomfortable (like the Trailstar). However, the Trailstar design is supposed to "shine" in extreme windy stormy weather but obviously, as your video shows, in a very uncomfortable way.
Yeah I was looking at that tyvek cover. Might get one as I've now got an alpkit hunka xl bivvy but it's a pain to get in and out of specially if you're under a low tarp but the tyvek one has a central zip I believe which would make life easier. One day 👍
Well done for giving this a bash on a cold wet night. This is something I have tried and intend to try again. But as yet I don't quite 'get it', damp, draughty, dirty, kit blowing away, crawly. OK, you get that, in the air, nature feeling, and I will try it again. But right now, despite your great video, compared to a light, dry tent, it looks grim.
😂 yeah totally agree but there's something about it for sure just can't quite put my finger on it. I see die hard tarp guys saying you can put an inner mesh up etc but then you think we'll why not get a tent 🤷🏼♂️🤣 I will try again in better weather though as it was nice when it was calm in the evening aside from the soaked ground 👍
@NoviceWildCamper Have a look at my Nortent Bivuakk camp from 2 weeks ago. That is something in between that you can use the inner, (I did) and open it up as demands. Cheers and happy Monday.
Yes way bigger. Its about 3m across and obviously you can pitch it at whatever height you like. You could easily sleep two with gear even pitched low like I had it to avoid wind. Even though the wind flattened it but that's because the guy out lines need to be thicker so I'm going to replace them. 👍
With your quilt generally, do you still bother with the pad straps, or just pop your feet in the end and lay it over you ?? Or do you clip it together to make a bag.
I've never used the pad straps. I don't think they're great tbh and have never felt the need really. It's plenty wide enough to wrap round you and covers totally. 👍
I haven't used it since but only because I've had to test others. I've found that a lot of these chinese tents and tarps need decent guy lines and makes a massive difference. They always seem to slip.
Very surprising at how damp the quilt was after only an hour. Ive never had an issue like this, maybe the OEX isnt a good bivi? Get the Army Gore tex one instead 👍
Yeah I'm looking at that or the alpkit hunka xl which was on my original list to buy. I only went with the oex cos someone was supposed to send me one but let me down so had to buy one literally on the day of the camp, hence I was even later than normal 🙄🤣
Real world testing of tarp and bivvy not a silly unboxing. I use taut line hitches on my guys instead of line locks and have always got on fine - one less mechanical thing to go wrong. That bivvy was very disappointing and unfit for purpose. Can you return it? I have a Dutch army "Goretex" (probably not) bivvy. Heavy and bulky as all hell but bombproof and no condensation.
Cheers buddy. I've actually sold the bivvy on ebay now but yes it was useless. I'm looking at the alpkit hunka xl going forward or possibly an army goretex one 👍

I think it was to do with the breathability of the bivvy. Apparently the British army goretex ones don't have that issue. Might try one of those.
