Dartmoor's Hidden Forests - A Short Documentary in 4K

  • Dartmoor National Park in Devon is famous for its wide open moorland landscapes. Large areas of the park are completely uninhabited and moorland grasslands stretch as far as the eye can see. However, there is so much more to this National Park than open, treeless landscapes. The valleys and gorges in the south and east of the park host large areas of ancient woodlands, some of which are internationally important, as Dartmoor hosts 3 out of the 5 high altitude oak woodlands in the UK. This film is a short documentary focusing on five woodlands across Dartmoor and why they are so special.
This film was shot exclusively on a Sony A7iii during the spring, summer and autumn of 2021. I do not own any of the music in this film and the rights belong to the incredible musicians that created them.
This music in this film in order of appearance is as follows:
Someone Loves Us - Dario Marianelli
    Creature, Pt.1 DjRUM
Lívstræðrir - John Lunn & Eivør
Healing Katniss - James Newton Howard
    Relentless - Tony Anderson
Ólafur Arnalds - Saudade (When We Are Born)

You have shot and produced a gem of a Dartmoor video here. All of the segments work and are beautiful; the one with the mists in the valleys which ends in a thunderstorm is sublime. Perople who love Dartmoor will share a link to your channel I'm sure. To go onto mainstream media all that's required is some continuity between the segments.

As a foreigner who has never visited UK I think you have made a great documentary of the wonders of nature UK can offer. When I think of UK it comes to mind that it is almost a barren island with no major forests but it seems that it's not all fields and sheep.

Dartmoor is possibly my most favourite area of England, I've been to a couple of it's small Ancient forest's but where is that vast, for today's standards, Valley Forest you portray at the beginning of this short film ?? We would love to walk around it and enjoy its history, peace and tranquility. We are devastating our land for profits and we need to start replenishing our land for the pleasure of our future generations, fast, but only as a united people can we realistically accomplish that task . A beautifully filmed video.

I grew up on the edge of Dartmoor in a farming area near Okehampton. So we would regularly go on out on the moor for the day and loved going through the forests.

Beautiful mate. I live in Australia but always hoped Britain still had some beautiful forests. Very well filmed and very enjoyable.
Australia is vast and dry but the forests we still have are sadly being destroyed by logging thanks to greedy government and industry.

Not sure how I stumbled onto this video but I couldn't stop watching it. I live in California and this somewhat reminded me of the temperate rainforests in the pacific northwest of the US, minus the towering old growth redwood trees. You have a stunning landscape there, it's too bad so much of the forests have been cut down - just like our beloved redwood groves where only 5% remain. Thanks for the video.

Well done! This is a very good film, and you must have put in much time and effort here. Dartmoor is indeed a somewhat barren (and, as you say) very wet place. I have been fortunate enough not have lived there for a good many years. Your time-lapse clips give it drama and impact, and the brightly saturated colours lift what can be a very stark, and sometimes, rather gloomy, expanse. All shot on your Sony a7iii. !!! A great achievement indeed.

Thanks for producing such a beautiful record of some of England's remaining woodlands. What a shame that so much was destroyed, and that deer and livestock continue to keep the natural vegetation from ever returning. With the amount of rainfall you receive, your country should be a temperate rainforest, not sheep pastures and hedgerows. Hopefully, some of it can be "rewilded".
